SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive Classics coming to PS4, XB1, PC; May 31

Discussion in 'General Sega Discussion' started by Neo Hazard, Mar 14, 2018.

  1. When I did music for a video game that ultimately got unreleased I sent demos almost exclusively in the middle of the night.

I think it was only Cirocco who accredited Michael Jackson to Hydrocity (or "The Water") and I don't think he ever confirmed that it was the same track that appeared in the game. We know that Sonic 3's music team would pitch several tracks for each level, and Naka & Co. would pick the one that they preferred. It's possible that "The Water" never got past the pitching stage, or possibly it was intended to be in the final game but MJ, unhappy with how the tune translated to the hardware, wanted it taken out.

The Brad Buxer interview doesn't ring a bell. I'm familiar with the 2009 interview (where he states he's never played the game and doesn't know what made it into the final build, but confirms the credits/Stranger in Moscow connection). I re-read the Huffington Post article on the subject as well, but once again there's nothing written about Hydrocity.

Hydrocity is almost certainly made by the Japanese team. One thing that almost always gets missed is that the zone songs made by Jackson's team (Carnival Night, Ice Cap, Launch Base) have very light second act remixes, while the ones by the Japanese team have complex second act remixes (Angel Island, Marble Garden). Hydrocity has a very complex second act remix, pointing to the Japanese team.

Additionally, the songs by Jackson's team (Miniboss, Sonic 3 theme and invincibility, Carnival Night, Icecap, Launch Base, Credits) are very similar in style, all featuring voice samples and most a 90s pop hip hop vibe. You can tell they are by a different team just by how different the songs are musically. The Japanese songs are much more conventionally 'gamey', including Hydrocity.

Hydrocity's music being used in Mania also implies that it's a track which can be used, further suggesting it is by the Japanese team.

I do, however, think its an assumption that 'all' of Jackson's team music is a problem. For all we know it could only be one or two tracks, since we have no idea which track is composed by who other than Ice Cap by Buxer. Nor do we know how many people worked on each track. There might be only one person in the team who is pressing legal charges.

As for Ice Cap resembling Hard Times since he wasnt the composer, I think Buxer plaguiarising the song can't be a good thing, but it's uncertain (and doubtful honestly) that the Jetzon members are even aware of it.

Right well, quick update, but I think this is what I was thinking of.

Also the lacking Act 2 remixes could have something to do with them all being the last three zones, for all we know.

They weren't the last three zones when the music was written.

Specially because flying battery was going to be in place of Icecap.

You know how Jackson is known for doing a couple of collaborations in The Simpsons (namely, "Do the Bartman" and "Happy Birthay Lisa") on the condition of remaining anonymous, because admitting that he worked somewhere else would have had some legal consequences due to the contract he had with Sony at the time?

I suspect that the same happened here. Thing is, the contract was MJ's and, well, he can't get into legal trouble anymore (some of the Simpsons staff started admitting these things after his death), so... SEGA, please just go ahead and re-release Sonic 3. =P

I think it's unlikely that the legal troubles are due to Michael Jackson or the Michael Jackson estate. If anything it's probably someone (or some people) in his team who was credited in Sonic 3. As far as I'm aware, there's very little evidence that Jackson had much involvement in the songs outside of the very beginning stages.

I also think that's the case. MJ was cut from the project, while his team was not.

As we think about it, let's just enjoy this Icecap ripoff that sounds quite good.

We finally have some decent footage of the new collection which was recorded (on PS4) by one of the youtubers who has been advertising the game for SEGA. He was lucky enough to visit SEGA's European headquarters in London and has been allowed to the play the game and show-off some footage.

In his video (where he does a "10 games he's most looking forward to playing in the collection") he also shows-off some brief footage of Sonic 2 in "mirror mode" (around 3:40 in video) with the screen flipped horizontally. Imagine trying to do the special stages with the screen flipped...

He confirmed we also have the option of playing the Japanese version of Ristar. I wonder if the JP version of Dynamite Headdy (which was added to SEGA Forever release) will also be playable in this collection?

Edit: Another youtuber has uploaded footage:

The Streets of Rage games also have the option to play the JP versions. Definitely playing Bare Knuckle 3 then!!

    Jack shit.
I'm assuming M2 is helping them since that's what they did with the Sega Vintage Collections on Xbox Live.

"Disable sprite limit". I wonder how they'll prevent that from breaking S1's title screen.

Reminder that Sega Smash Pack 2 had more accurate sound emulation back in 2000 than the collections that have followed in the recent years

Picked this up from an indie store today that had broken street date. Already came across quite a few issues with the sound emulation in the games I've tried.

EDIT: Here's an example from Bare Knuckle 3

This only happens in gameplay. Listening to the voices in the Options screen and they sound fine on there.

I got it early too and noticed several big issues with sound, too. Almost at AT games level. Also some input lag ( that got noticeably less painful with the 1.01 update they launched today) Why?! It can't be so damn difficult to properly emulate mega drive at a goddamed PS4!!

Sorry if I'm a little late, but can you guys confirm if Sonic 1 had the drop dash implemented or if we simply over-analyzed a screenshot ?

Think you're getting confused with the Switch SEGA Ages version (coming later this year) which we know will be getting extra features (very likely the spindash and based on that screenshot the drop-dash as well), whereas the version in the new Genesis collection is just an emulation of the original with no additional gameplay features.

Oh. Sorry about that, look like I got them mixed up.
(Can we all agree that Sonic 1 is the most ported game of all time ?)

    No bonus games or unlockables?

Edit: Jesus fucking Christ it's 2018 and we still can't get the sound right on emulation of a 30 year old console.
