It's a remake of Somari, and it's not a troll. If you've ever had a secret love of the Somari bootleg on NES, or any of the (hundreds of) hacks of it, this is the game for you!

Play the NES "classic" with your choice from not 5, not 4, but 3 characters!
90% of the games development went into this thread!

I'm not sure if I'm amused or terrified at how much effort was put into this.

    You're ever so slightly insane.

    But it's definitely nifty.

I actually played and voted for Hyperdrive at SAGE. I'm glad to hear you're going to play this too!

"Ever so slightly" with how many trillions of quotation marks?

Also, to anyone who may be getting issues with extreme flickering or breaking graphics: Please be sure you downloaded the link in this thread, not the Melpontro video. He linked to the original build made in MMF2, but someone (I'm not sure if they want to be credited or not), built in in Clickteam Fusion 2.5, which in theory, should fix the bugs.
The flickering graphics is a bug of MMF2 itself that I had no means of preventing, though I did try everything in my power to avoid it happening.

  6. Surprisingly enough, I played through the whole thing and enjoyed it, totally in a non-ironic way. Star Light Zone (my favorite) was really fun, and once you get the original's glitches out of the way, the levels are pretty neat. I'm a bit disappointed that there didn't seem to be any secrets or unlockables, though. Do you unlock Super Sonic if you get all the Emeralds?

There are actually lots of secrets hidden around... But most people wouldn't notice them unless they know the original game stupidly well. Examples are the bubble shields in Labyrinth Zone, almost every level has new hidden items and such. There's even one badnik that reoccurs in almost every level that was absent from the NES game.
Of course Super Sonic is in the game, but Hummer and Somari doesn't have that benefit due mainly to resource & time constraints... Not to mention a but cluttered development. To be honest, I added Hummer in the last week or so of the game's development

  8. Didn't the original Somari have it to where you couldn't drown at all underwater? I thought that the Bubble Shields were a nod towards that. I noticed the Shield items, but didn't notice the new enemies. Of course, I couldn't beat Green Hill in the original, so I don't have much of a frame of reference. I'm just somewhat fascinated by Somari in that they were able to get a (albeit slightly broken) Sonic engine working on an NES, with unique level designs. They actually seem to have put in a decent amount of effort, just not much by way of bug testing.

Already mentioned this on youtube, but I smiled way too much when I noticed a certain something going on in each level.

This was great. I actually beat a zone. I couldn't do that in the original. You should continue working on this though. Perhaps a enhanced color palette mode that uses colors closer to the genesis game. Or you could make Family Kid playable.

    Beats me.
https://youtu.be/aN-WSJs82ho I was playing through and on Marble Zone Act 2, I got this odd little glitch. It kind of adds to the bootleg charm.

Nah, you could drown. I tried to do work on a TAS a few years back, but I wasn't as good as the guy that took over from my work. The fact that you can drown became a bit of a tumor in trying to get the run done quick. Then again, the entire Labyrinth Zone was just broken as hell.

It was me, I built it. I was having the issue, which rendered the stage unplayable (since it also affected hitboxes, and platforms became unusable), so I built the new binary in F2.5. It's also why the download is on my server :V

This was the glitch BTW. Except it was pulling a LOT more weird shit than this:

Never in all the years I've used Fusion have I ever had anything like this happen.

    It's Somari and ... it's actually playable!
    Nice work there.

Ahh, so the major graphical glitches I encountered the first time I got to Marble Zone 2 aren't all that random after all.

In general, there are many neat things in this game. Elemental shields, the post-boss hit and friendly fire for enemies are only a few of them. (I found the latter one especially awesome.)
Just one question: How many rings are actually in the special stage? The highest ring count I got was 642, but I still missed a few of them.

There are still a few bugs though. Losing rings sometimes mutes the normal ring sound entirely. And of course there are Sonic Worlds things like getting stuck on the edge of a spring being unable to jump. (Moving to the left or right works, if there is space on that side.)
The jump seems to have a constant height is some levels and not in others.

Also: I know that the original Somario songs aren't good. But the "new" songs are a lot worse. The original songs usually did the harmonies right, but the new songs are entirely off-key and not in a listenable state. Please fix them.

You could drown... And when you say "Slightly broken", you're being very relative, aren't you? XD

It's probably no surprise to people who've seen my Avatars of choice, but yeah. I put a lot of effort into those sprites, I'm glad you like them.

That probably won't happen at this point. It takes fare too long to implement a new character, and to be honest, the first thing I did for this project was delete Knuckles and Amy, and refashion Tails into Somari (You can probably guess what I did with Sonic, lol). Hummer only made it in because I decided I wanted a third character in the last two weeks of the game (Right before starting Star Light Zone), and Hummer kind of stood out to me.

Marble Zone Act 2 seems to be where the glitch usually starts if it happens.
I take responsibility for that glitch because I used MMF2, and it seems to be EXTREMELY finnicky with big projects... I started experiencing issues during Spring Yard Zone's development when the MFA would randomly corrupt after successfully saving in MMF2, and I'd have to make a backup every time I saved.. Because for whatever reason the backups would be fine.

I'm glad you enjoyed it too! The friendly fire was something I was particularly hopeful people would notice, actually.
I haven't had the volume bug with the rings, but getting stuck on springs I spent a LONG time trying to fix to no avail. It's unlikely I'll be using MMF2 for future projects anyway, I has WAY to many issues during development that were quirks of MMF2.
Such as the jump height you mentioned. I have no idea why that'd happen, the code is the same in all levels.

I know the new songs aren't exactly great. I would've liked for them to be better, but I had to make a soundfont using clips recorded off of an emulator to make them happen. I tried to get in touch with a few people, but my attempts were ignored, so I kind of had to slap them together last minute. Everything you see in the game that's not either a rip by someone from The Spriter's Resource, or part of the Sonic Worlds Engine was either recorded, ripped, assembled, or even created, by me.

I can't promise I'll fix them, I'll try at some point. Besides that though, most of these bugs are just how the game is, MMF2 just is too disorganized and chaotic.

Sorry, time constraints were an issue again. Super Sonic's sprites were made my Mister Man from the sheet submitted on TSR, so those were available to me at the time.
Especially in Hummer's case, I probably would've let him have a super form if I didn't implement him mid-march when the game was 85% or so done.
