I once managed the cheat by pure fluke on my gamecube version (on 50hz because the music is slower :D),
yet when I was a kid and was borrowing it from a friend, I almost always got that cheat to work @_@ .. how on earth did I do it !?!?

Wierd... the music in Sonic 3 shouldn't be slower in 50 Hz mode.
    PAL MegaDrives run at 50Hz.

yah, sonic games in 50hz run slower than 60hz. I've tested it, and I hella prefer the 50hz s1/s2 boss themes.

Not sure if sonic3 was or not.. but seeing as freq has to be set before loading, I'd play s1/s2 then s3 / s3&k, all at 50hz

I tried it maybe 20 times and could only get it to work once.

I always thought that code was a fake, but I guess I was wrong.

Though it was kind of interesting to see "Mushroom Valley" and "Flying Battery" in a Sonic 3 level select before Sonic and Knuckles came out, not to mention almost the entire S&K soundtrack in Sonic 3's sound test.

I thought half of those were missing? When I tried a couple o months ago, quite a few tracks were missing.

The actual music isn't there, but the name is. Like the music itself was rippedo ut, but left the name in there... and.. meh

I just checked on my Sonic 3 rom and the S&K tracks are indeed present. The only tracks I couldn't find were those specific to the theme of S&K (title music, ending music, invincibility, one-up), and the new version of the Act 1 Boss battle theme.

I'm guessing it's the same situation as in Sonic 2 beta and Sonic Crackers, where they make all the music first and then match the levels to the music or vice versa.

The music in Sonic 2 shouldn't play slower, either...

Actually, the music is updated each frame, so it should play slower.

In the PAL versions of S2/S3/S&K*, SEGA fixed the music so that it ran at the same speed as on the 60Hz versions.

Does anyone actually have those ROMs?

*(Actually on the Megadrive, that is - I'm assuming SEGA didn't bother to change the ROMs for the PAL releases of SMC/+)

Like I said in one of the topics in Sonic Games Discussion, the music speed and gameplay is slower in Sonic one on the SMC. Maybe it's the same with all the other ones?

Need I dust off my sonic 2 cart and prove you wrong ?

Sonic 2 music is slower in 50hz. Fact. wasn't fixed. Like it slower.

No, it plays at the right speed unlike in Sonic 1. Fact.

Unless you have revision 00? Maybe that's what they fixed, hmmm.

Mayhaps, but my sonic 2 cart for my megadrive plays the music slower than any rom or 60hz version (smc) I've seen. Fact ;)

I had played it since godknows how long. when I got into the emulation scene, and got a rom of sonic2, I was confused as to why the music was faster, and thought it was a bug in the emu, until I heard recorded mp3s on the net of the songs

edit: Not sure if it amounts to anything, but the megadrive is the first version.

I don't know about S2, but the music is definitely slower in S1/3/3K. They were all fixed in Sonic Jam though, which was quite a shock when I first played it.

Wierd, I'm 100% sure that the only Sonic game that plays the music slower on my PAL MegaDrive is Sonic 1. Even Sonic Spinball has it at the right speed.

You can also check the music speed by turning the emulators to PAL before loading the ROMs. It should work this way in real systems unless your cartdriges have different ROMs or there's something strange going on with your MegaDrive

By the way, Sonic 2 didn't have this music speed fix until very late in its development, judging from the existant PAL video footage.
