And who the fuck BUYS Windows anyway? Most people get it with their PC.

...people who don't rely on shitty premade manufactured computers and build theirs from scratch?

Oh right I forgot about that XD Since I'm not a PC gamer I didn't consider that.

My best guess is that Ubuntu is jumping ship from the epic failure that Gnome 3 is going to be when released (likely due in spring as well). Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the Gnome UI. But the new shell concept is just crap for mainstream computing IMO. It's not nearly as intuitive, plus it takes more mouse clicks to do the simplest shit like switching applications. They should have gone with a major incremental upgrade (shit like being able to pin apps, along with some aesthetics) to bring it back up to par with Mac and Windows instead of thinking out of the box. Oh well, there's always KDE.

This also explains why Linux Mint, my distro of choice, is in the process of parting ways with Ubuntu. They're likely not going to take the same route for their UI. I'm very curious what will happen with the next release. Either way, 2011 is going to be a very interesting year for the Linux desktop.

They said this probably wouldn't start fully happening until 11.10 or 12.04 if I recall. The current Alpha for 11.04 has Unity as the main interface if you have 3D drivers installed. Otherwise it will default to the standard GNOME 2 panel setup. Unity is pretty early since applications are only accessed from a folder, a step back to when Unity was in development for 10.10.

There's a lot to it than that. I mean, who wrote the fucking law that every free OS should be a UNIX clone? By all accounts, "desktop LinuX" is a dismal failure. A fraction of a percent of people actually use it. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over eXpecting a different result.

Also sorry for the capital Xs my keyboard is broken.

In more advanced configurations, Wayland still is lacking.

One element of X I use a lot is network forwarding — using the whole "run your application there, display it here" setup. Albeit Wayland is for more simple setups, I believe such functionality would be quite beneficial to be added.

Now, I know X is a horrible kludge, but it does have some nice features it provides.
