So the graphical style of Sonic CD is...pretty eccentric to say the least (when it comes to the individual levels themselves, anyways). Beyond that though, it's not hard to figure out what setting they take place in, i.e. tropical beach side, quarry, etc...except for Collision Chaos. I get that it's based off of Spring Yard Zone, which in turn is based off of a city, with flashy lights and pinball bumpers put in places, but I'm not getting a clear indication of that in CCZ past the neon signs, girders, and random pipes in the ground. Is there something I've completely missed the past 20 years of my life, or am I trying to look farther into funky art assets than I need to?

Try doing a weed. Then Collision Chaos will make sense.

If I were to take a gander at the sprite sheets and the Little Planet loading screen, I'd say it's some sort of refinery system. It looks like there's pipes hidden under ground, if that island in the central sea of the planet is Collision Chaos, it's connected to Quartz Quadrant, which looks like a mine, and Stardust Speedway, where Robotnik's constructing a massive statue of himself. Where the structure is complete in the Bad Future, the 'refinery' sits abandoned, where the structure has been changed to a city hall-esque building that suggests alternate inhabitants, the 'refinery' continues to be used but in a way that doesn't harm the surrounding area.

But that's really a guess, I have nothing really prominent to back it up.

It wasn't until I started researching for my art contest submission that I really started to make sense of it. Given the naturalistic background setting, I interpret the yellow lights as a field of flowers with a heavy out-of-focus bokeh effect- basic circles are also used to represent foliage in Metallic Madness act 2 good future, the green coloring there is just way less ambiguous than CCZ's yellow. There's land in the sky because it's situated on the underside of Little Planet, so you're actually looking up at Mobius.

I guess the proper replies make more sense than my baseless speculation. While there's -something- to help base what the present could be, I feel as if the past stage makes even less sense. I see all the familiar structures, and the girders, except it's all rock. Maybe Eggman's turning the area into a funky entertainment district so his robot bugs can have fun while he mines the planet of it's resources?
Maybe I just need to inject more drugs via used pot needles and watch it become clearer to me :v:

The Past is probably when Robotnik was just setting up. You see the girders, so he's probably just starting construction on the refinery aspect and getting ready to lay the pipework while making sure nothing collapses on him. The pinball bumpers are there to deter rodents with ball-forming habits.

I mean I understand the construction aspect of it, but where is he starting construction? I can't make heads or tails about what the hell that landmass/continent is supposed to be before it turns into bleeding eyeballs: the metropolitan district.

I always interpreted it as some kind of park. Right on the edge of a city, mostly outdoors, with plenty of plants but also man-made structures. It may eventually get turned in to a refinery in the Bad Future, but it didn't start out that way.

Well, he appears to be starting construction where Sonic is running through before branching out into the background in the future and I figured the buildings were a variety of things: storage containers for the refined materials, extra refining centres, drilling platforms to look for more resources, etc.

Really, it's all up to how you interpret it. All it's supposed to be is Spring Yard Zone, to the point that CC and SY are the only two Zones where an act has multiple signposts.

Yeah, I guess Collision Chaos is pretty abstract compared to the other levels. It never occurred to me before.

I would say that acid is more relevant.

Since when do people inject weed? :P

Yeah, nah, weed doesn't make CC make sense - weed makes you feel even more aware of and more wowed by the mystery. + - [7]

I posted this a while back in another forum, but this is a picture I took at home in the morning a few months back. It instantly made me think of Collision Chaos. So as far as "what Collision Chaos is supposed to be", I can't say, but as far as the palette goes, maybe it is early morning in the zone.

Note: No "weeds" were harmed in the creation of this photo.

(For the record, I always interpreted Collision Chaos as some sort of weird abstract amusement park? I have no basis for that assumption though - just the funhouse layout and the funtastic JP music.)

    Nothing, really.
Frankly, I find this to be the strongest guesses among the group here. With the whole pinball gimmick and the bumpers, there's obviously some goal of amusement here. Should be added that the past variant looks to be heavily influenced off of Palmtree Panic, and in the Good/Bad future both have updated displays that seem to give off more of a city-esque vibe.

Why the hell there's a big land in the sky? My only guess is the same as mentioned before, that's Sonic's planet, and we're just on the part of Freedom Planet that's very very close to it.
