So the new Ubuntu beta came out recently, anyone try it yet? I was very disappointed with it on the initial install, but after installing the updates it's actually pretty stable. Lots of nice eye candy, and Unity actually works, at least so far. Anyone else try it?
I tried Ubuntu 11.04 which if I'm not mistaken already uses the unity interface, and I really like it. It does take some patching from what I hear before its really useable, but otherwise I could actually settle on it as an alternative to Windows if I really had to. I hate Mac.
I don't like Unity, it seems like a halfassed attempt to be more OSXish. Bit of a shame really, because there are a few neat ideas in there [although I really really really hate the application menu in its current form, although being able to just start typing your program name to get to it is pretty nice]. If they changed anything between 11.04 and 10.10 relating to Unity, maybe I'll grab the ISO and see what little things have been fixed/worsened, but I can't be arsed to do it right now. Also, I hate those minimal scrollbars, especially when you are trying to click them and they aren't doing anything because you are just in the range of them appearing, and just outside the range of them being operational. When next LTS release comes out, I'll update from 10.04, and stick with the classic Gnome 2 UI, unless they really clean up Unity. :P
I tried to use Unity daily at work but the main thing that pissed me off is the applets at the top for mail and volume and so on kept getting stuck. After a while I gave up and went back to classic Gnome. I used 11.10 all day today and found it to be beautiful and functional.
I'm hesitant to try 11.10 after giving 11.04 a spin. Unity just doesn't do it for me . . . I'm content with GNOME 2 and 10.04/10.10, but unfortunately I'm gonna have to switch to something along the lines of XFCE eventually when 10.04 support expires. Also, I recently acquired a MacBook Pro. Anyone here have advice on triple booting?
Linux should be the OS you install last. Bearing in mind Macs specifically provide for dual booting now I would follow the process for doing that (not sure what it is specifically, you'd have to look up how Boot Camp works), THEN install Linux as the final OS.
Just tried to run unity after doing an upgrade install. It loads my wallpaper and then desktop icons for some reason, flashes a white screen, and then goes in a loop. I'll probably just do a clean install sometime, most of my important stuff is on my Windows partition.
I downloaded Ubuntu this month, and the one time I tried it, it actually saw the wireless networks in my school (something that's never happened with my previous laptops), but for some reason, refused to connect to them. Maybe they require a bit more setup than "Connect and let the computer figure out the security itself" for Ubuntu?
It might well be that it can see them but the signal isn't strong enough to connect. The fact you've never been able to see them before would hint at that.
Sorry, I wasn't clear: I had never been able to see wireless networks on Ubuntu without going through a VM before this version, and my Windows partition connects fine. I haven't tried Ubuntu in a while, but maybe it's the security that my school might have on its Wi-Fi.
Sounds like you need to get the driver for your wireless adaptor. It sucks, because you need to connect it somehow to the internet to do that.
Oh man so who has upgraded? I take back everything I said about 11.10, it's actually really fucking solid. I didn't think they could get Unity working by now but they fucking did. Good show lads! Also, use this guys, you'll thank me. It's in the software store / APT http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net/
