this is looking to be great so far. Just curious about something though; wouldn't Launch Base be somewhere near/over water, (because it was in game)? Maybe a large lake of sorts?
Yes. On that same line of logic, Carnival Night should be near the water too. Mushroom hill should not be near the water, since none of the S&K levels have water in them (I assume they're either higher up elevation wise or they are more towards the center of the island)
Concerning Carnival Night, I always thought that it just had a 'water feature', like many parks do, rather than being near a natural water source or body of water.
The reason I say otherwise is because when you play as Knuckles there is no water there, or in Launch Base Zone (Until you break that tube), or in Angel Island. Sonic only lowers some of the water in Carnival Night, but not all of it.
I' think Chrome Gadget would be either by Launch Base, Carnival, or kind of like a "secret base" nestled in the mountains somewhere.
I put Mushroom hill near the water because I'm pretty sure in the game you don't really go through the whole the entire geographical area. Same thing with AIZ. Launch base will definitely be in the middle of a lake surrounded by mountains. I don't necessarily think Carnival Night should be near water. That makes no sense. Mushroom hill is a natural forest though and it would make sense to be near a large body of water.

New pipes. Credit to GNA for ground tiles. I should probably work on a new background too. Yes I'm getting sick of this zone too. It's Zone 4 now though.
Those pipes don't have the same diameter all the way along their length: Looks pretty bad. You could take one slice of pipe, use Game Maker or something to make it follow a sinusoidal path, rotating as it goes and leaving a trail. Screenshot it and clean it up, or just use it for reference.
...Or just adjust the shading to compensate for it. If you brought the shading on the bottom of that pipe up higher, the change in width would hardly be noticable.
I want to emphasize that this is NOT my work, it's Strife's: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR1DkC6RQAQ ...Holy frapping crapstack. Why hasn't this fellow been validated yet? The talent on display here is frankly amazing.
Because we validate based on the person, not their hack/fangame? (That said, they have no Validation topic anyway.) Also, I know both threads have the same name, but please try to keep fangames in the fangame thread, and hacks in the hack thread. This is the third time I've had to move posts from these threads in as many days.
Sorry, I tend to go to threads straight from "View New Content" so I totally didn't think (and I'm still not used to there being a fangaming subforum yet). I'll be more careful in the future. Although I bet it would still save you headache in the future to just rename the thread to like "General Fangame Screenshots/Video Thread" or something. Anyway, I digress. Onward!
Though, to be fair, Strife is a really nice person, so he'd be totally fine anyway. And yes, his work is astounding.
Apart from the Sonic references, is this all his work? I'll be blow away if it is because this is very creative. Personally if this was my project, I would try and ditch as much of the Sonic elements as much as possible and see about getting it officially released. The art would need redoing to a higher standard but the basic core of the game looks very complete.
Thanks for the support, Mercury and Candescence! ^_^ And everyone else for their compliments, of course. Aside from the fan character I used, the Sonic elements and the fact that it's using the Worlds engine, I indeed made everything myself. Also, you totally read my mind; The video is actually slightly outdated, and I've since replaced the rings and Robotnik signpost as well as a lot of the Sonic sound effects. Though, I'm not sure if I would be allowed to post a thread about it, since with each passing day it gets harder for me to figure out whether it's a fangame or an original game with Sonic physics. As far as the artwork goes, it's a tricky subject. The art style I use saves time, but it has the unfortunate side effect of making foreground objects hard to distinguish from background ones, at least in bright stages like Dragon Valley. I will probably wait until the majority of the game's graphics are finished first, and then buff up the shading on everything if necessary. Thanks again everyone!
It's like they combined Sonic, Megaman and Mischief Makers all into one game and self-inserted a fancharacter. It's pretty unique, graphically pretty good, and I'm sure it plays decently. Layouts seem like a mix of Megaman and Dimps' level design though (lots of forced springs, and I think bottomless pits from what I could see). I also like the music. I'd have preferred if they used an existing character though. The gameplay seems to be a good fit for Blaze the Cat as well, for example. I don't like the character's design, but I'm sure many others do. I notice that the voice clips are of Marina from Mischief Makers. Some aspects of the level design were very interesting, like the aspect of knocking down and going on top the logs to get across places, or pushing those logs aside to take a lower route. The wall running sections are rule of cool, so that's neat to have. I did like the boss, as well. Badniks were pretty interesting as well. Edit: If it goes on to become a fully original project then ignore my opinion about using an official character entirely. I would make the character more original and less like a Sonic-style character though, if you did want to make it a wholly original project.
The question shouldn't be whether it has Sonic in it, the question should be "would this be something people who are interested in retro sonic would be interested in?" (hint: yes) You should mention who you fished up to help with the music for it. edit: caught myself there!
What the fuck? Colour me very interested here -- this is exactly the kind of game I wanted to make when I was about 14, and I don't mean that in a patronising way. I wanna play this.
