This is probably big enough to be given its own topic outside of the "Other Knowledge" thread, especially seeing how it's kinda relevant to this site. Jason was the one who originally made a post about it in there.

So Todd van Luling did a big article for the Huffington Post about Michael Jackson's involvement with Sonic 3. The first half of the article is just recounting what the community had already found out and the writer calling Sonic fans "Blues" for some reason, but the second half gets pretty interesting as that's where the writer's own research comes in. He contacted the people who were credited for working on the game's music and Brad Buxer, Doug Grigsby III and Cirocco Jones all got back to him and gave him details about the work Michael Jackson did on the game.

You can read about it here. If you want you can skip to the text after the image of the flashlight and a question mark, as everything before that is a summary of everything we already know.

I was just reading it, thinking it was just a rehash of what we all knew.

But geez did that second half surprise me. After all this time, it was true. MJ's songs made it into the game. Wow.

I don't understand. Is Drossin an idiot? He reportedly had to replace it all yet was amazed when he was shown it wasn't by the writer. Did he not once play the game or listen to the soundtrack after release?

That whole "blues" thing was weird, but good article nonetheless.

What did all of you blues think?

If I can call Huffington Post writers "huffers" I think we're square :P.

Well, perhaps I shouldn't have just skimmed the article at first, because damn there are some deats. I wonder if the workflow that Jackson employed will now be used for new remixes, because that'd be interesting.

    Yay!

I tell you what guys, Todd (the author) was great, he told me so much stuff which (at the time of writing) was pretty much top secret stuff, Im so glad to be apart of this, even if I don't really contribute much anymore to the scene, it seems I was instrumental in all of this. Cheers guys!

What the frig is with all this "Blues" crap? That's never been a thing in the community ever, as far as I'm aware. Was that just invented by the author just to make it feel more edgy or something? Makes you wonder what else was invented in this.

That said, assuming that everything else is true - and most of the community stuff other than this "blues" crap stacks up - this does answer a lot of questions nicely, though still not quite the full credited track set that we've been after. =P

Given the author's use of the term "Blues" and the fact that he followed all the "Clues", I'm surprised he didn't make the headline read "Blues Clues".

when he phoned me up for an interview he said that the full instrumental master tracks must exist somewhere in someones vaults according to Buxer anyway. As for the blues thing, meh, im not to arsed, I mean, whats better? "Sonicers?"

Sonic fans?? It's just stupid to try and force a fandom name where none has existed, especially in a journalistic piece.

At least go with Boomers :v:

THE COCKROACH LIVES ON (in fossilized form.)

Great read and good stuff to confirm this info. Now I wonder if it's possible to talk with these guys (officially or otherwise) on having these tracks released either through bandcamp (see: Grant Kirkhope releasing the Goldeneye uncompressed soundtrack) or more of a Masato Nakamura deal with how the Sonic 1-2 album was handled.

If they can be found, of course.

But it should be a negotiable deal as long as the guys get compensation in some form.

For some reason it's not the first time I read the term "blues" and I always assumed it referred to "sonic fans" :v:

About the article, interesting read but I'm still reading it...

The first half was a decent summary. The second-half is definitely the final and definitive first-hands confirmation.

:) Now we can credit some of these tracks to the whole Jackson team:

    • Carnival Night Zone
    • Ice Cap Zone
    • Launch Base Zone
    • Act 1 Boss S3 / Knuckle's Theme
    • Competition Menu
    • Sonic 3 credits

    Do I miss something?

  14. As much as that would be the most awesome thing ever, the instant Sega ever actually admitted that Jackson worked officially on Sonic 3's soundtrack, Jackson's estate and label would annihilate Sega with lawsuits and royalty demands. There's honestly no other reason Sega would continue denying something that now even mainstream journalism has proven to be true and the official composers have weighed in on it, which is quite a thing considering I remember several years ago when at least one of the composers basically said, "Fuck off or I'll get my lawyer." :v:

Very interesting read. Personally I thought there was no doubt about it, but it's still good to have a concrete confirmation either way. Now that just leaves determing who composed what and if the original demos still exist, as The KKM said.

Honestly, Sega kinda strikes me more as in they don't really care about the issue either way. It happened over two decades ago and it's to them dead and buried. I wouldn't be surprised if a fair amount of today's Sega primary staff who would normally be aware or involved about these things don't even know about it at all.

Oh, wow! It's really nice to finally have confirmation of what we've suspected for so long :D

That would be absolutely amazing, but I'm not gonna get my hopes up.

  19. A lot of this was confirmed years ago at different times, but it's great to get something new from people that previously ignored requests to be interviewed. :)/>/>

As for releasing the original demo versions, the problem with that is who owns the rights to them? Does Sega? MJ's estate? The individual composers on the team? Don't forget that this could be why the remake of Sonic 3 was never made, or even commented on by Sega.

Jackson's estate wanting royalties from Sega would be on the level of Nintendo wanting a cut from youtube videos's revenue. Its spare change for the IP holder but its make it or break it for the target group. And it'll bring up the hate.
