Guys it's a quick photoshop job - there's no prototype stuff in there.

I mean genuinely, I did exactly the same thing for my own website/portfolio a couple of years ago:

do I have a prototype now?

Well okay yes I sort-of do since I took that screenshot but you get my point.

And yes "Quackers in Sonic 2" is totally compatible with the PC Jr.

You know that that's not an actual Sonic ad, right? :v:

Even so, I couldn't recognise the tile.

Also, I did mean for it to take it with a pinch of salt. I mean, the guy in the background can't be that exhausted =P

No seriously why are you all trying to find a proto screenshot in a photoshop of an ad with kids playing on a PC?

I never said it was from a prototype. :v:

I know this isn't exactly much to look at, nor can we get anything out of it, but it shows a little tiny different layout design (or different location of the lamp post). "Sonic The Hedgehog" on Facebook posted this picture the other day:

And I just don't recognise that part of the level on-screen. It comes close to the first lamp post in Act 1, but the ingrave of the tile art doesn't match. It could be a prototype as I see no HUD either (or it could be a mock-up coming to think about it). Again, not a game changer here, but thought I'd point it out...

Just noticed the title screen on the left monitor. One Sonic 1 is not enough?

Here's another attempt at removing the halftone (w/ color correction):

Awesome! I uploaded the original scan to my Google Drive and edited my previous post with the link so if anyone wanted to touch it up they could. I just have basic photo editing software on my PC lol.

No offense, but I'm not really a fan of that last attempt. Too overfiltered, and it actually destroys some of the detail. Case in point - in the image I'm about to post, you can actually still see the scanline structure of the original image.

I've taken the original scan, adjusted the black level a bit, resized it down to 600dpi, ran it through a descreen filter, slightly adjusted the black level further, and resized it down again to 300dpi for posting here.

There's still a slight horizontal moire effect but too much processing can be a bad thing.

That Sonic look's turquoise-ish now... Is your monitor well calibrated?

I didn't actually do any color correction, only levels. That's basically the color that was present in the original scan, and thus I guess close to the color present on the original page? Assuming the original scan was well done.

Honestly, it'd probably be best to rescan that image and use the descreening built into the scanner driver (which always seems to do a better job of it than any attempts to descreen after the fact). At the very least, the "full original scan" needs to be far, far less compressed IMO. Here is a detail of the left wing, JPG artifacts out the wazoo.

I think the bigger concern here is the moire effect, but that's more of an indication that the scan isn't going to get much better, since it's picking up how the ink lies on the page.

It's asking a lot - a good scan of potentially dodgy printed off-camera screenshot. The fact it needs to be colour corrected is a clue it might not be doable.

But who knows.
