I'm not looking forward to Illumination film at all to be frank. Their movies are anodyne and toothless even when they're adapting stories with actual messages such as Dr. Seuss, to say nothing of a game series that has what be generously called a premise. If the film is remembered X years from its premiere, it'll be by dint of being the first animated video game made outside Japan that resembled its source material; which is a very specific thought that's not likely to arise often. The OVAs (or in some instances 52 episode series) of video game properties hold more interest for a multitude of reasons. Above all else they give us a glimpse of the original creator's insight for the potential the property before further sequels and other creative forces ossified it. Even then, the Mario OVA is downright soporific, especially on repeat views. Not to mention the thing has the audacity to shoehorn tie-in ramen(?) sponsorships into the action. Could you imagine the jeers this would elicited had Sonic done that?
wtf I'm kinda mad this isn't the sonic film we're getting this is fanmade but if this was the actual movie I'd throw down the ticket pre-order money faster than you can say "sonic 2006 was an inside job"
If only that was the actual movie... I'd BE SLEEPING OUTSIDE THE CINEMA TO BEAT THAT QUEUE. Unless of course we're being trolled very cleverly.
Save for that god awful trailer song if the movie was like that I'd love it. It's so dumb but it almost works.
It's not actual movie news, but it IS related to the movie so I'm gonna go ahead and post it here: So for anyone unaware RAGE 2019 recently happened, and the theme was the Sonic movie. RAGE (the Really Amateur Games Expo) is a part of SAGE that's game jam of sorts. Each year people submit intentionally bad games and they play them on stream. Here's a link to the archived stream, if anybody here is interested. (It starts around 12:42) There's a lot of, uh... "inspired" entries there. Congrats to all who entered! "But HSC!" you might be saying. "I don't have two hours to spare! How can I get my fill of horrendous Sonic movie-themed computer game goodness?" I'm glad you asked! I slept through the deadline so I didn't end up submitting it, but I DID make a game for RAGE! If you've ever thought, "What if I could play a game that was made in less than a day and took less than five minutes to beat?" You're in luck, because I am proud to announce SONIC THE HEDGEHOG: THE MOVIE: THE GAME is available for your playing pleasure here.
I'll probably catch the movie eventually if it ends up on a streaming service I have, but other than that I have next to zero interest in it. It looks like it'll be bad, but video game to movie adaptations already have a reputation of being bad so it's whatever? Also hsc man you should have used Nebraska's newest slogan on that sign: "Nebraska: Honestly, it's not for everyone." It would fit for the movie as well.
Paramount licensed it out in retribution for me helping the studio purchase the distribution rights from Sony. I had to pay $599, as well as interest (I was legally required to buy brand-new Blu-Rays copies for both of Sony's live-action Smurfs movies). Spoiler (Teaser to the second Transformers movie --some of the footage is actually from that trailer-- although I did edit some things around. Excellent example of trailers being absolutely nothing like the movie in tone as well as quality.)
So according to both ResetERA and Reddit the movie had a test screening this last Saturday (February 9) so we could see early impressions leaking out soon. Also according to this guy the buzz is that the Sonic movie and Detective Pikachu are both good? Could hell have frozen over? Obviously all of this is unverified as hell and could just be smoke without fire - but it'd be the shock of the year if the film actually turns out great. At least this might be a glimmer of hope.
Ok, but if the movie succeeds then we get stuck with a decade of Biffy the Hedgehog in our games, because Sega Corporate... It's not that I want to be a cynical ass, it took decades of conditioning...
If anything though, I hope the movie is either amazingly good, or absolutely horrible. Mediocrity would be boring.
Junkie XL are confirmed to be doing the soundtrack. So if anything the film's going to have fucking awesome music. ResetEra thread here. Honestly with this news and the "buzz" around the movie being that it's good - this is making me think the film could turn out somewhat okay to good after all.
