After taking myself 3 years to actually do it, and many more for others to see it come true... it's finally here: It took her time, but the most well known treasure hunter who debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 finally landed on the classic 2D territory! This hack was mostly done primarily on the spriting/artistic side, although there's a few noticeable changes and details aside of giving her Knuckles' gliding and climbing moves, in order to bring a more enjoyable experience! (ex. now you can climb on almost every wall in every stage!) Controls: A/B/C: Jump Down + A/B/C: Spin Dash Jump + A/B/C: Gliding Wall + Up/Down: Climbing (Only in midair) A/B/C: Forced Rolling (Only in midair or climbing) Down + A/B/C: Drill Drive Download (v1.1 - SHC2019) Credits E-122-Psi: Coding and feedback (Thanks a lot for the cooperation! <3) Zig Sonar: Original Rouge sprites Aier: Betatesting Mercury: Demo recording tool And for those interested in the sprites, here's the whole sheet I made: SPRITE SHEET Spoiler: EXTRAS Go play on the Sound Test these numbers for the following features! 93: Get all the six Chaos Emeralds 9E: Credits 9F: Ending Sequence Spoiler: CHANGELOG Version 1: Initial release Revision 1: Now the Drill Drive can break the MZ's green smashables blocks. Revision 2: (3/01/19) MZ's and SYZ's BGs from S1 REV01 are now properly ported. Since the hack was made using the REV00 disassembly, and I forgot to replace the chunks set. Fixed the level order of the Level Select. Slightly modification to the Life HUD. ---------------------------------------------- Version 1.1: Sonic Hacking Contest 2019 release Added Spindash release's dust (directly from Mania's Drop Dash), and the camera delay. Addition of minor extras features. Almost every level layout was modified, as well adding some new secrets on the way. Minor fixes on Knux in S2's moveset port. EDIT (12/09/20): Updated to Version 1.1 (SHC2019). Check the changelog for more details.
Welp, as I've said on Discord, this hack is dope. The sprites are really good looking, it plays really well and even the MZ blocks has been fixed :p Definitely a good reason to replay Sonic 1.
Out of all the character hacks for Sonic 1, this has to be the best. Those sprites are flawless and her Drill Dive is sick. I also appreciate the fact that you used REV01 and you applied the Press Start Button text at the title screen which most people gloss over and disregard.
It's not based on REV01. They just followed a guide on porting the background scrolling. The guide doesn't even correct the chunks, so MZ's clouds don't match the scrolling, and SYZ has a mountain that's cut in half. The 'Press Start Button' thing's also something you can just copy from a guide.
I realized that it wasn't REV01 after I saw the incorrect level order in the level select. I also see scrolling issues you mentioned. That's unfortunate and hopefully he could fix that. And I know the PSB is a thing you can copy from a guide, it's just my biggest pet peeve with S1 hacks that don't fix that simple code error for something that was supposed to be there in the first place. It's an inexcusable oversight.
Thank you very much for all your warm comments! As Clownacy said, I used those guides, and it's just that I forgot to port the REV01 chunks set. Although I never would've noticed the MZ thing if it weren't for you guys. Anyway, I already fixed that, as well the Level Select misorder. The new (and 2nd) revision is in the first post.
Gotta ask, are you planning on importing Rogue into Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. Really enjoyed playing this.
Priorities are draining myself a little bit now, so don't expect those things for a while. Btw, I'm glad you liked it!
I love Rouge the Bat. but i'm curious, how do you swap any character to play as instead of playing as sonic?
@Joseph A. Rose You learn to program 68k assembly, familiarize yourself with the Sonic engine, and you draw the sprites. Here's the SCHG How-tos and MarkeyJester's site and the Retro GitHub, where you'll find the disassemblies. You'll also need SonMapEd once you've got your sprites ready.
So I suggested this to Moon a while ago, and he expressed interest in the idea, and that was to give Rogue a more "Flying" run, similar to that of Tails animation style. First animation we both agree, (Especially now that i really compared it to other floater runs" didn't express speed. HERE is round 2, and this time I thought id share it with the rest of you in to get more feedback. For those who really wanna see the sad apple of the first try...
