As some of you may already know, Super Sonic was at least partially conceived at the time of our beta's development. The proof of this is found when breaking a question mark monitor (you'll have to hack an in-game object to object A6, type 08).

This is old as hell, I found it way back in '99. But since I didn't see it anywhere on the site, I figured what the hell.

The ? monitors normally only show up in Final 2P gameplay. But by hacking you can change the monitor subtype to any value. Lemme dig up my old hacking guide for a sec...
You can put in any subtype from 00 to FF, but only the first 10 work, the others crash the game due to being out-of-band.

Do you think that maybe super sonic could have been available in 2pl mode?

    In the final? Dunno.

In the beta? As far as we know, definitely not, at least not anymore than the palette. Noone's found actual logic for Super Sonic in the game code yet.

Thanks LocalH. Yes, this info ought to be on the site. I'll add it shortly.

  7. WOW Dindt think the yellow guy would make it into beta but Sonic team do have a way of suprising us all the time don't they? :D :D Super always looks good in sonic games (I think) SADX makes him look super-cool (heh heh)

The yellow palette certainly makes the beta run "leg swirl" look pretty whacked. :P

Hmm... There's a kewl thing I found in the final a few years ago. If you turn into SS as "Sonic Only" in the Options, and debug to the transform moniter in a level, then smash it, you'll have SS's rotating pallete, but Sonic's normal sprite. Get hit, and you'll still lose rings. Do the same with 2 moniters, and SS'll have white stars all over. Kinda like HS in Sonic 3. Y'all probably already knew, but I was just wondering when someone would belch it out on a Sonic message board somewhere. ;)

I can even tell you why. It's still doing the same effect as it's supposed to in 2P mode. The ? monitor switches Sonic/Tails place and currently held items. That is, in a level two people were racing in, if Sonic were near the goal with a shield, and Tails was near the beginning, and Tails for example hit a monitor and got the ?, then Tails would be near the end with the shield and Sonic would be back at the beginning!

It appears that when you're in Sonic Only mode, Tails' position is locked at 0000X 0000Y, so when you hit just one, you'll be pushed way up there and "dropped", and now your invincibility and running power are gone... to Tails. :D

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
Ha ha, yet another topic that deserves to be in the archives! Yeah, I remember playing that Super Sonic savestate sometime last year, I just find that amazing how you managed to get the palette rotating! :D

That's cool though, because you can use it to replicate the beta's SS effect in the final. You must lay down an even number of Teleport monitors. Break them, and Sonic should regain his speed and invincibility, but in 'normal' fashion. Then, you can either continue playing like that, or you can break either an Invinicibility or a Speed Shoes monitor, and the effect will wear off as it normally does. Do both and you get 'Prototype SS' in the final. If you want to stay this way, however, you'll have to remain under 50 rings, or you'll snap back to full SS when you jump.

That's pretty cool how the ? monitors act like the S tv, cept no SS in S2B.

I didn't manage to do shit other than replace an invincibility monitor with a ? one. The game already had the palette-rotating code in place. It was literally a single-byte edit.

When you've been working with computers for almost 20 years, you're bound to get decently good with them =P

Depending who you are, that could happen, eh?

I remember... I think it was first or second grade when they began introducing us to the keyboard. It was the beginning of the "revolution" probably. Of course, the layout was for the Tandy Color Computer III's they had a full room of, but eh. So, let's see, my first experience therefore would be... hey. I was only 6 or 7. 5's not so far off. :P Of course, all we did was play with that Turtle thing, but it was something. Y'know, pretraining for all the little kiddies to learn to type into command prompts because that's obviously how we were going to use computers. ;D
