My hope is that the changes Iizuka is speaking of is basically re-working controls from scratch, making them more like Adventure, but including drift and quickstep, and also a differentiating "gearshift" mechanic, having a "lower gear" for precision platforming and a "high gear" for Unleashed/Colors/Generations-speed areas, with more emphasis on wider areas and multiple paths.

I'd love for an open hub world taking what Sonic Adventure did, but making it gigantic with level entrances to find, and even secret, Colors-esque mini-levels that can be found for additional emblems/red rings/100% completion that would further push the idea of exploration.

Aw man. Shadow was silly but at least it was hilariously bad.

I like the attempts to cater to classic fans, even if they don't work most of the time. Sonic Colors was the closest to a Classic game I had experienced in a long time. But, unfortunately, I have little hope of them actually figuring out old style stuff any time soon.

Honestly, unless they use Christian Whitehead to make a classic game I'd rather they didn't bother. They seem to be doing a genuinely good job with Modern titles, so I think they should just play to their strengths. Watching them try to make a classic is just embarrassing, like going to see a cheesy, god awful Beatles or Elvis tribute act who are obviously a shadow of the real thing.

what Iizuka said is that he'd like to work in a new "standard" of Sonic gameplay

he never said it was going to be the next game

he never said he'll do it soon (or even do it, for that matter)

this isn't me doing wishful thinking, because the modern Sonic gameplay is getting a tad stale, it's just me being annoyed at everyone reading what he said wrong or just jumping into conclusions that seem kinda far.

Personally I like Moderns Sonics controls compared to the adventure series one. He has more fluid control, the thing thats bad is the havok physics, it makes you rebound and bounce off things when going fast, so that way you don't get dead stuck like in Adventure. It makes sense but some people tend not to like it. I cannot go back to playing the Adventure games now they are just horrible to me when playing. Its not the graphics or anything, its just that control style is slippery and hard to control when going fast.

I hope they continue this Modernized style, its controllable and they can adapt it to any type of stage scenario now. I'm fine with Dimps being a part of the handheld series at least. I just don't want to see them doing any main console sonic games. As for the redesign, I think Iizuka just meant gameplay style most likely; they wouldn't change his design after such a good rep it has attained so far now. Since people can recognize this as Sonic The Hedgehog, I don't want to see a new Spyro or Crash redesign being that drastic.

Otherwise I'm perfectly fine with where the franchise is at right now, and wouldn't mind having it staying this way. Since they can obviously milk it out more.

I only hope they don't change model of Sonic and his crew in the next game. To it looks just perfect. SA:DX's models were ok too but when I look at current modern Sonic ingame I just can't imagine how it can be improved.

Yes please. As much as I love Unleashed's style of gameplay, I really do miss Adventure's take on traditional speed and platforming in the series. Something about Adventure's Sonic stages felt right.

It has also been my most sincerest hope that they finally create an engine that incorporates proper momentum and actual rolling physics into the game design. I would love for there to be a 3D Sonic where I can just press a button, have Sonic roll into a half pipe, and watch him continuously build up speed and momentum from propelling vertical and downward on his own.

I bought it on launch at full price and have zero regrets in doing so. Just get the damn thing =P

And of course a controller is the best way, grab an old GameCube pad and use it - I tried with the Wii controls and it was awful.

EDIT: Post #11111. Could have been spent on something better, but oh well =P

Would be the first Wii game I'd willingly think about buying (I don't own a Wii, my mother does but rarely ever uses it...)..will have to think about it~

I love a lot about the Sonic franchise. Obviously in 2005 it took a dive, but since 2006 when it was at it's worst, it's only really improved and they've done a great deal to try and stay true to the series roots despite the emphasis on speed sections.

    * I really approve of the current english VA's. I think they're doing a fantastic job, and though Amy sounds a bit like Mini Mouse, everything else is super.
    * The art style- Colours and Generations both looked great, and they've finally settled on a particular style rather than swapping it every other game.
    * They've finally got a good balance between speed and platforming. Perhaps they've still divided these sections up (whereas the old 2D games gave you both and you could choose to speed or take it slow), but unfortunately things had to be lost in the translation to 3D, and then from the old 3D with it's open world style (and sometimes quirky camera) to a fixed awesome camera which compliments the new design styles of the levels.
    * The music just keeps getting better and better.
    * they're starting to add secrets and nods to the old games again, and Sonic as a whole is retaining it's feel, rather than feeling like a game with Sonic tacked in, like Sonic 2006, or even Unleashed in many respects.

    What I still dislike;

    * They seriously need to keep up with and continue this trend where they re-use old style music, or add little extras which link it back to the older games, because it gives a sense of continuity and development in the franchise. They seriously need to add some more invincibility boxes and give us some remixed and recreated boss music, and try and stick to character motifs. The Eggman theme in the White World of Sonic Generations just blew my mind. We need to know that every time they are the same characters.

    * How they're fucking Nintendo. Or rather, how Nintendo has totally fucked itself and now SEGA can't be arsed trying to circumvent this any longer.

What's making me satisfied with the franchise is that they actually care. No game is expected to be perfect, but there should be hard work and care for the final work product. As stated earlier in the topic, the series tried to rest on its own old reputation and drove the series brand into the ground with the crappy games that resulted. I think Sega is at least cognizant that they still have a lot of repair to do with the Sonic brand.

I think the thing that makes me most happy is the good new games is having me revisit the old games and a lot of memories. Since Sonic Generations I've played though quite a bit of the older games and many rom hacks. Gameplay wise, I think they finally found a niche and flow for Modern Sonic. I still haven't played Colors, but I have my eye on it when I finally get a positive cash flow, haha.

My only concern is that after the success of Colors and Generations that Sega is going to stop caring again and let the series slump, thinking they have it made again. I don't think this is likley, but this can be a danger.

Everything about the atmosphere of Sonic Colors. Sonic's less of a touchy-feely emotional bitch like he was in Sonic '06 and Secret Rings, and more like the cocky bastard he used to be. The fact that he no longer takes himself seriously is a massive sigh of relief.

The levels in Colors were fantastic. I mean, Sweet Mountain? That's easily my favorite level design ever. None of it makes any sense, because it's Sonicland. It doesn't fucking have to make any sense. It's just a level made of food.
Roger Craig Smith and Mike Pollock are the best voice actors for their respective characters to date. I have no desire to see either VA quit these roles. Ever.

Sonic Team have found direction for Sonic. After all these years of trying new shit continuously, they finally have a direction that works, even if it's vague (which I totally don't mind, by the way. Leaves room for ideas that hopefully don't suck). His design is almost perfect, if a bit plastic as far as his face is rendered in the boxart for Sonic 4 Ep1 and 2. Generations did it right though, by not trying to give him a lower lip.

Hooray for positivity! I like seeing threads like these.

Personally, one of my new favorite moments in Sonic history is riiiiiiight here. The new writing for Sonic is spot-on; it's cheesy, entertainingly so, and the best part about the plot is that it steps in, gets the story told, and when it's done - get this - gets right the fuck back out of the way. That's how a modern game should work compared to an older one, right? A modern game shouldn't necessarily be minimalistic in plot detail, but the scenes shouldn't be too long OR nonexistent. Better yet, they're skippable.

Other than that, this thread speaks for me.

The praise for Sonic Colouring Adventure made me think of something.

I am glad there is an attempt at targeting the correct demographics now. Kiddy games go to Nintendo, normal games go to everything else. Even building on that, there are less kiddy main games now, and most are not even coming to Nintendo consoles any more.

The redirection and reduction of diapers is really helping. Still flawed, but there is an effort being applied.

Yeah, nothing quite like a circle jerk.

Also, where's the Crush 40 nowadays? Maybe some of you don't like 'em, but I personally love 'em. We need some guitars in the new Sonic games. We need some cheesy lyrics with some underlying heavy meanings. Seriously.

I'm just generally quite happy with the direction the main series games are now taking. I'm counting Unleashed, Colours and Generations here. The writing really suits the franchise and I don't think I've ever felt more 'at peace' with the series since Sonic & Knuckles was released. It seems they've found a style and stuck with it and luckily, it's one that works. The cartoon-ish antics, the silly (yet, still quite funny) dialogue, the banter between characters... All of it just works really well. It's kind of like a cross between the Adventure-era coolness and AoStH silliness, which really works for me.

(I know, I know, I'm terrible at wording my feelings on this franchise)

On top of that, the musical direction is really good now too - rather than just fill our ears with constant guitar tracks and rock music (which was cool, but just not really Sonic enough), we're getting a decent scope of different genres now, all of which fit the situation they're used in mostly. Rooftop Run is one of my all-time favourite Sonic tracks now, both the Unleashed original and the Generations Modern mix.

We've all seen which way the games are headed, and it seems to be in the right direction. One other thing in particular that I've liked about Sonic in recent years, was the Short Film "Night of the Werehog"

It reminded me of when SEGA had previously made "Man of the Year" from Sonic Jam

Both are fantastically well done. I wish SEGA would create more of these Short Films.

One thing I really like is how the Game Gear Sonic games are finally being released on the 3DS. I just bought Triple trouble and it's still just as good as I remember, and just as difficult too. The save states really help with special stage 5.
