Do you mean like cheap emulation stretching or actually expanding boundaries to get real 16:9?
I think both work, but 4:3 is better than stretched 4:3

I find they work pretty well when full screen on a PSP. I thought it would look nasty, but it doesn't.

Mhm, yeah. They look alright stretched on my PSP, but I play them in 4:3 everywhere else. I'd like to see some hacking wizard get real widescreen one of these days though. Or I'll wait for Sonic 2 HD.

I'm sure Sonic 2 HD will be fantastic when it is released in 2043

I really, really enjoyed turning on the HD filter and stretching the screen out in the XBLA ports (and to an only slightly lesser extent, using the HQ3x filter on an emulator). Back when I had an SDTV it just looked blurry and crappy, but that filter gives everything a very bright, smooth look in HD. Most of my play-time on the classics the past few years has been in wide-screen on my PC or Droid or PSP, to the point that these days I find it a little jarring to see them in 4:3. So yes, I think it translates really well.

Ugh, I cannot stand any of those dumb filters Sega uses to turn the games magically into "HD".
I prefer playing at the normal 4:3 without any filters, except sometimes the NTSC filter.

The games hold up extremely well on HD displays, be it on the Ultimate Collection disc, or emulated on a Wii.

I prefer to stick to 4:3, personally. It just looks awkward when stretched out into widescreen.

I like to play it in full screen, wide screen stretched in my PSP. However, I don't like the horrible smooth filter the emulator has, and I also hate to play with those strange, irregular, stretched pixels.
Also, I don't think such a discussion was entitled to have it's own thread.

Filters don't tend to work past 2 or 3x so on an 1920x1080 HD display you're always going to have some level of pixellation with the Mega Drive games. The games were sort-of designed with things like Kega Fusion's NTSC-filter in mind but I don't personally believe that things like hq3x or hq4x really work to anyone's advantage. The information just isn't there to draw a suitable picture.
I can't really see much appeal in running these games in full screen with resolutions that big, especially in widescreen. I suppose you could use the Sonic 2 2-player defense but the games weren't really meant to be stretched any further than an average early 90s TV set. But each to their own I guess.
Since I often need to take high quality screenshots I tend to run emulators in windowed mode so I can see what it is I'll be getting. Probably good practice since there's so many people who can't seem to get screenshots right.

As a matter of fact, a lot of Genesis games work well in widescreen. The first time I played Shining Force on my widescreen television, I was amazed at how well the resolution fit the TV; I almost didn't notice a difference.
