Here are some Scans I came across threw out the years of searching for sonic Xtreme related media, I haven't seen these circulated around in the sonic community yet. Also if anyone has some media of there own please do share, as some of it may have not been circulated around in our community yet. http://www.mediafire.com/?ssym4ponpsc3r5a Preview of whats inside.
lol I very distinctly remember the EGM and gamepro articles you've got there... I had collected hundreds of different magazine issues from the 90s (some my own, others from friends, etc) at one point (eventually threw out most of them like 6 years ago?), and I distinctly remember getting a couple subscriptions solely to follow X-Treme's development process :/ Talk about disappointment ;_;
Thought I'd update this old topic with an image of sonic from sonic Xtreme that I have never seen before. (unless its a sonic schoolhouse pose) I found it here: http://www.sega.com/segapc/contests/bugbakusonic/ By the way they have an actual sonic CD PC demo that is for real. http://web.archive.org/web/19961220034547/http://www.sega.com/segapc/downloads/games/soniccd.html I don't know if this has been looked at by any of you guys here yet. ( anyways a lot of interesting stuff on the site) maybe there are some hidden Jewels buried. I found some Ecco wallpaper that was interesting in the downloads section for example.
Woah, I've been listening to that Sonic X-Treme Mike Wallis interview by Pachuka just on the way home from college today, and just when I come home and log-in this thread pops up. =P
I've been in contact with Mike on and off for the past few months, I found out that he threw away a huge cardboard Sonic x-treme stand up cardboard poster statue thing when he moved. ( I also asked if he had any other materials from the game, sadly no.) Also that sonic image I posted above from sega's website,,,, I think it may be the 3D blast model...... Sorry guys >__< But there was also this image! 3D blast again?! http://web.archive.org/web/19961219233622/http://www.sega.com/features/allsonic/
Sorry for offtopic but is it me or this 3D Sonic model is very wellmade and actually pretty faithful to the original? Is it the one that was rasterised for 3D Blast?
It looks insanely similar to the one that was used for the Sonic 3 title screen, specifically because of the hollowness of the ears, and the unique eye-ridges.
I find it hard to believe (or in the context that this is Sega we're talking about, maybe not!) Sega wouldn't just reuse assets, or in this case just use the CG model used for Sonic 3, for marketing purposes late in the MD/GG era. His pose is mostly the same.
OMFG ! ! Serously ?! The models are insanely similar! ( I bet if they moved the camera a little bit before rendering, I bet it would match 100% ( besides the mouth texture) Where'd the screen on the right come from?
The second Sonic model in my image came from the official Sega page circa December 1996, thanks to the Wayback Machine. :v: EDIT: They're probably not the same model since Sonic's wrapping his hand around his belly more than his Sonic 3 model.
It can still be the same model, just a different render. Models can be posed. I find it hard to believe it's not the same model, considering the similarities, and the differences from any other models we've seen from that era.
I meant the full body version on the right of that, Also since its a model its hand can be moved. The sonic 3 version has a high specularity as well (a different material perhaps)
There's a moment before the actual title screen appears where you can see the entirety of Sonic's body in Sonic 3 a couple of seconds after the Sega logo.
I'm familiar of how CG characters are modeled. I'm saying I don't trust Sega of that time to have been consistent maintaining their assets to modify for future use as they do now. IIRC, they had the terrible habit of misplacing, losing, trashing everything as soon as a project gets done or cancelled (like so many other Japanese game companies of the time, and today). I'm open to the possibility of this model being the same, and thus being totally wrong, though.
Maybe the model was edited a bit, the shoes and legs don't match 100% Also I was looking at the sonic model In the 3D blast Sega Saturn opening, it seems a lot of features remain the same. The eye pupils are the same strange oval/square shape, the mouth texture matches the one from the website. as well as many other features. (like the blue under the neck where it meets up with the stomach) Anyhow it looks like the model on the website is the one used in 3D blast Saturn intro, which looks like a reworked version of the sonic 3 Model, so yeah I think your right that its not the same model.
