Lol, it's exactly the same issue I was talking about =P (Descubrir, April 1993) (EDIT: actually yours may be a different issue, because the ad I found definitely was not in page 2, it was in the middle if I recall correctly) @ReBirFh: that one is indeed much clearer, though it's cut =/ That ad spawned two pages there? The one I scanned was just one page. EDIT: and just to make it clear, I'm looking for entire scans, not partial ones. The screenshots really don't show anything new...
This ad was very common in Brazillian Magazines, you can find this (probably with better quality) and more in old Brazilian gaiming magazines. If someone wants to research, those magazine scans are your best bet: http://www.datacassete.com.br/revistas/edicao/Acao-Games/57.html http://www.datacassete.com.br/revistas/edicao/Supergame/57.html http://www.datacassete.com.br/revistas/edicao/VideoGame/57.html
We can always delete the brazilian text and write the spanish one over it, as we have it in poor quality. restoration! :specialed:
http://www.datacassete.com.br/uploads/revistas/videogame/videogame_5.pdf Lots of beta screenshots in this magazine, all the screenshots have already been documented on the Wiki, but it kinda seems like a time line in development. Nice research btw, very interesting. edit: actually the screenshots on the wiki are definitely from the same magazine, but these scans are slightly better quality. Makes me wish I was old enough in 1991 to care about reading gaming magazines. =P
Sonic The Fighters reveal, from the UK's Computer and Video Games Magazine issue 174, May 1996. Also hints at Sonic X-Treme and Sonic 4.
The bit at the bottom of the Sonic the Fighters article first page: Is that a level in Fighting Vipers? Because it looks a lot like a sort of green Hill zone. Also that Emerald Hill zone on page 2 looks nice. Also on page 4 the two new characters are bean and Bug. I assume Bug is just supposed to be Bark, but still.
So I decided to do some more digging around on the net a couple of weeks ago and found some more stuff. Again, the images are from the Mega Drive/Mega CD era. Enjoy! Website: http://segabits.com/blog/2010/12/29/classic-sega-magazine-corner-egm-may-1991/#more-6605 - Credit goes to Barry the Nomad on SEGAbits for the magazine scans. Now I could have sworn these images have been posted before. There's so much information out there now that it's hard to keep track of all. At any rate, they're not in the wiki. Very interesting stuff. http://www.segabits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/EGM1.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.segabits.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/EGM2.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff Website: http://thesoniczone.net/ - Credit goes to The Sonic Zone for this particular magazine scan. If the Sonic 1 stuff looks familiar to you, that's because we have the English version of these magazine scans in our database. The magazine that did the English version went by the name of "Raze". The magazine that did the Italian version below went by the name of "Consolemania". The rest we don't have in our database I believe. http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/001/Consolemania1-p34.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/001/Consolemania1-p35.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/001/Consolemania1-p36.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/003/Consolemania3-p70.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/003/Consolemania3-p71.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/003/Consolemania3-p72.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/003/Consolemania3-p73.jpg - Sonic 1 stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/013/Consolemania13-p25.jpg - Sonic 2 GG stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/CPCAttack/001/CPCAttack1-p16.jpg - Sonic 1 GG stuff http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Gamepower/020/Gamepower20-p19.jpg - Sonic Spinball stuff Off topic: http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/007/Consolemania7-p18.jpg - Consolemania talking about the different Rev versions of Sonic 1 for the Mega Drive back then. http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/022/Consolemania22-p22.jpg - An article with an image of the Mega CD 2 and its start up screen. http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Consolemania/019/Consolemania19-p16.jpg - Seen this image loads of times. Sonic and Mega Man together =P http://www.old-computer-mags.net/oldmags/albums/Gamepower/014/Gamepower14-p20.jpg - A small article about the Japanese Sonic cola can. And that's about all from me for now. I've updated the first post by the way to make it a bit more readable. I also added a link to the first post. I wasn't sure if it was one I could post or not. Staff said it was fine. It was this link: http://www.emuparadise.me/magazine-comic-guide-scans/magazines - Emuparadise video game magazine scans
Ha, are you kidding me? I had unobstructed versions of two those images (the biking one and the sitting back on a deck chair at sea one), stuck up on my bedroom wall for years (then I had to take them down and someone threw them out before I went looking for them again). I got the posters from a British magazine called Look-In. It was kinda like a pop-culture/celebrity magazine for pre-teens. Bright coloured graphics, talk of fun movies and upcomming TV series, and had a Bill and Ted comic strip. I recall it being very kind to Sonic the Hedgehog with a fair few articles and screenshots. And of course the aforementioned "posters" which were single page images I'd rip out of the magazine and stick to the wall with blu-tack. I recently came across a few Look-In magazines and combed through them. I recall finding a few interesting things involving Sonic, but nothing blatantly BETA SCREENSHOT so I left it at that.
On the sprites, you're right of course (unless they're somehow counting individual 8x8 tiles NES-style and still I think the number would be high without even doing the math). They're not too far off on the total amount of RAM though - 64KB 68k RAM, 64KB VRAM, 8KB Z80 RAM = 136KB total RAM. If you count the TMSS ROM in that (which wouldn't surprise me), that would equal 128KB of "memory". The fact that they seemed to have done that, and then separately listed VRAM, is a big fuckup though :P They also forgot to mention the MD's 448/480 line mode, and even on the SNES side they repeated the common 224 line misconception.
Please consider scanning those posters if you ever come across them again, it would be very interesting to have a full look at the original idea of Sonic's world...
I wish I could ICEKnight, but I'd been looking for the posters for something a few years ago and couldn't find them. I think someone threw them out which, given the amount of times I've just saved something from going into the trash bin, is quite possible. Certainly if I find them, I'll post something up. I'm looking in (ha ha) to seeing if I can get more Look-in information. There seems to be issues on eBay, a site selling old issues here but nothing from the 90s. But I'm definitley right about the magazine covering Sonic a fair bit. I'll see if I can get my hands on some old issues.
Anyone ever notice the footage of spinball in this video sometime after the 3:00 mark granted it's not a magazine scan, but it's still something I don't recall seeing at least
I knew I'd seen that layout from somewhere before with the platform in Toxic Caves! It's pretty obvious that the look that was originally planned for Toxic Caves was based on the pitch video from STI which in turn was based from Satam Sonic. and of course the game planned from Satam Sonic all in conjunction with Peter Morawiec or however you spell it. And all in conjunction with ME stating the obvious!
Sorry to bump this old topic up. I just didn't see the point of making a new topic covering something this topic already covers. Not long ago, I was combing through the internet again to see if I could find any other sites that had old magazine scans. The only thing I came across this time was this Sonic website called "Power Sonic". Not sure how I didn't come across this before. They got within the site their own database of magazine scans including a dedicated section for Sonic prototype related magazine scans. Some of which we have on the database already. Some of which I've never seen before. Case in point, these old foreign magazine scans of Sonic Spinball when it was being developed [Example 1] [Example 2]. While we've seen some of those screenshots before, I don't remember seeing that many screenshots of the opening cut scene. I'm not sure if any of the other stuff they've got on there are ones we've never seen before. I've not had a good look through the site yet. Check it out. Again, there's loads of other old Sonic related magazines scans, some we might not have seen before. Website: Power Sonic - Credit goes to everyone on Power Sonic for the magazine scans.
