So, this is my first attempt at a ROM hack, and I decided to start with Sonic 1. Why? I have no idea XD
    So anyways presenting my "hack":
    Sawnik Teh Hedgehawg
(joke name until I think of a better one, unless you think I should keep this one =P)

Not very much done at the moment, but I do have a couple of things to show.

This screenshot shows off quite a bit in one go. My attempt at making a Sonic Adventure 2-esque HUD, the Sonic adventure style life icon, the different sprite style I'm using (Sprite import around 70% done, just gotta work on ones not in the spritesheet), and a new palette for GHZ that I'm trying out. (Palette, Yes or No?)

This second one just shows new signpost art, and that I'm using Sonic CD Title card art.

Just to show that you now get a life every 50000 points like Sonic 2 and 3.

Things are not what they seem...*shot*

    Working Spindash.

Monitor art made to look like/similar to Sonic Adventure style.

    Monitor images from various games.

    1-up: Same as life icon.
Speed Shoes: A shoe from an advance style Sonic sprite.
Shield: ...I forget where it's from.
    Invincibility: The original
5 ring: Sonic 3 Ring image edited to have the number 5 on it. (I made all normal ring boxes give 5 rings...don't ask why, I don't even know =P)
15 ring: Same as above, but with 15 on it. S box made into one that gives 15 rings.
    Robotnik: Sonic 3

Music planned for stages: Various music from Sonic 2, 3 and maybe 3D.

    Credit where credit is due
    Sonic Retro: Helpful guides.
Shobiz: Helping me with the life every 50000 points thing.
Rathe: For making the sprite sheet I'm using for Sonic.
    SCAA: Some compressed art.
ESE Sound Importer: Lots of music ports.
The guy who made SonMapEd (I forget his name): For making mapping editing, sprite importing and getting the pallete from a sprite quick and easy.
    I think that's about right.

    No download yet, sorry =P

Anyways, all comments and criticism welcome, and if neccesary, feel free to mock =P

    Updates since then:
    New Marble pallet

A few of the ending sprites:

    Walking sprites:
(They may look as if it'd be jumpy towards the middle but it looks fine in game, so =P)

New Scrap Brain and Labrynth pallets:

For the tl;dr people: I'm working on a hack, updates as and when they happen =P

Why did you adventureise perfectly good Sonic III sprites? Adding weird white things to his shoes?? Making his quills too long?? Why?

This look good, especially the sprites... Gonna DL the ROM and fire it on my MD2.

A friend of mine that does not like Sonic made a mocking pic called Sawnik where Sonic was a mixture of a saw and badly drawn Sonic....

    EDIT: no DL yet.... :)

Sexy custom art, decent palettes, nice use of online resources, great description. :) A fine example of what a hack display thread should look like. Nice work! Can't wait to see the level art...

Whoa, that's some pretty nice palettes there. I can see a great hack coming along! Nice art as well.

The Sonic sprites look pretty good, but that white on the shoes kinda make it look not so good. Maybe make it a lighter shade of... I don't know, maybe red, blue, yellow? Experiment a bit more. If those don't work, just stick with the white for now. :)

I can dig the Adventure look. Nice job on the sprites. Are you going to use Robotnik's adventure look too?

    Thanks for the comments people.
Thanks, most of the sprites needed were already in the sprite sheet I found, but I'm trying my best to make the rest that I'm editing from Sonic 3's sprites fit in with the style. Good to see I'm doing it well XD
Also, Adventure style Robotnik will most probably be used, unless there's an extremely good reason why I shouldn't =P

Cinossu: The Sonic 2 Sonic pallet does look good with the sprites in game, but I'm not sure which I think looks better. I may post a comparison pic tomorrow to let more people give thier opinion of which palette would look better.

I think this hack could do with less of Sonic's arms stretched out behind him. I understand you're going for the Adventure style, but it looks ridiculous in 2D with just the plain running animation. Otherwise Sonic's sprites aren't that bad. The HUD is a bit hard to see though, like Cinossu said.

The HUD is nice, especially the life icon. I think you should go all the way and take out the "SONIC" and "x" from the life count so it's just this:

    [ ] 3
    (^ life icon)

I like the sprite style and the new monitors, and the color schemes are nice so far.

Decision time peoples, which palette should I use for Sonic? (Mainly focusing on the blues and the reds. The rest of the colours are pretty much the same.)

    Palette A: Sonic's Sonic 1 palette.
    Palette B: Sonic's Sonic 2 palette.
Palette C: The one I'm already using.
Palette D: A mix of all 3. Darkest blue from Sonic 1's, main blue from Sonic 2's, and brighter blue from the one I'm already using.

@ Tets: I may consider changing the running sprites depending on what people think of them after I actually release something.

@ Squints: I was planning to do that anyway, good to know someone agrees that I should =P

Palette wise I say A or C, I would go for A considering it's a bit pointless using custom art but the original palette, in my opinion anyway, I just picked A because it kind of does fit with the art.

I think A should be the main pallete, why? It still gives it a classic look and in my opinion, the Sonic 3 pallete is horrible.

D seems to work best with the shading you've chosen. I'd go for that one.

I'm inbetween on B, C, and D. I like C for its darker shade, which is good especially if you're going for the true original Sonic Adventure style, as opposed to the later Sonic Advance/Sonic Heroes palette. B and D seem to represent the way Sonic looks now. A just looks silly to me.

I would go for B or C. C looks more Adventure-style, but B kinda fits a little better with the art.

Nothing that concerns this place in the least.
This picture reminds me of a palette I made for Marble Zone before in some old palette hack I did back in 2004. The only difference, however, is that I changed the color of the lava into green, so that it'll look like toxic waste. Strange coincidence, I guess. Anyway, nice job on the hack so far. By the way, do you ever plan on changing the level layouts?
