I have always loved how wild super Sonic looks in sonic 2 and 3, his spikes are uneven and well, looks more like goku's hair blowing in the wind :(

I bring this up after seeing this screen posted by Malgra in the bugs topic:

Sonic looks so much cooler then his what you could now call shadow the hedgehog style spikes.

I agree. I do like how they started using the old style Super Sonic design in Sonic Heroes, and almost every game afterwards.

How do you mean old style exactly?

I meant that they went back to giving him the "Super Saiyan" look, as opposed to the one he had in Sonic Adventure, which looked similar to Shadow's.

I'll bet that's why they did it, with the introduction of new hedgehogs they'd like to avoid confusion... honestly I think the dreamcast version of super sonic looked the best, his spines looked really sharp and the mapping effect looked stellar.

16-bit Super Sonic is badass, but 16-bit Hyper Sonic is super mega uber-badass. Faster, stronger, flashier and to top it all off comes in multiple different colours!

A question, who does everyone prefer: Hyper Sonic with his flashy "rawr I'll kill ALL the badniks on screen" manouvre, Hyper Knuckles with his "rawr, I'm going to smash this wall and kill everything" ability or Super Tails with his..er.. glowing birds of doom?

Super Sonic's SA1 design was pretty close to the classic one.

If anything, the "Super Saiyan" look looks less like the classic one. All his quills are pointed in the same direction! It's also comparatively dull from a visual standpoint.

    Super Tails FTW.

Yeah, Super Sonic looked much cooler as a Super-Saiyan style than flowy-wavy spines style.

But yeah, Super Tails is the best. Tails is the best at everything.

    Internet.
His animations were pretty fucking badass too. He just stood there leaning off an edge with his arm's crossed for his 'off balance' animation.

Nah, I loved careening around as Hyper Sonic as a kid, but these days I honestly prefer good old Super Sonic. The after images and flashing colors have felt like overkill since 2002 or so.

The Hyper forms more or less break the game as far as I'm concerned. As long as you can keep your rings up (which is cake if you know where the Special rings are), you can't die unless you're crushed or fall down a pit, and by the time you have Hyper whoever you're probably good enough to avoid all that. Hyper Sonic/Knuckles's "kill everything" attack feels overpowered, and Super Tails's Flickies go as far as to fight your battles for you.

Super Sonic works just fine for me. I get that the Hyper forms are something "extra" to play with, but I'd almost go as far as to say they're kinda boring. When I get all the Super Emeralds, I start a new game, so I can get the Chaos Emeralds again, and play from Carnival Night and on with Super Sonic. Still kinda cheap, but the lack of that double jump that kills everything makes me feel better about it.

I think they made sonic keep too much of his regular emotions when turning super now, there was no feeling to it in unleashed so it was kind of pointless apart from being a final boss event.

Yeah he needs to become more elite when super, cross his arms and be more angry looking.

Ah, the good ole 'messy quill' Super Sonic. Got to love the classics indeed (despite my avatar having the clean-style). The original 16-bit style does give more character though.

Most definitely. I liked SA1-style Super Sonic, but they killed it with Shadow. I guess they realized it and decided to go back to the classic style for Sonic Heroes-onwards.

I like the modern Super Sonic, which first appeared in the Sonic channel wallpaper and then in 06 onwards. Turning up the top quill was a nice choice.

But yeah, I do think they could stand to bring back the "elitist" attitude he had back in the day.

Though Sonic 2's is odd. It all has a buff chest and muscular arms. I wonder what It'd be like if they stuck with that.

The most faithful reproduction of the classic Super Sonic design probably has to be the one present in Sonic Heroes. I absolutely loved how they brought the spikes up in a surreal, anime-esque fashion—it better represented both the Sonic 2 design and the Super Saiyan hair design that it initially drew from. Pretty spiffy.

Super Sonic in general was always an awesome extra to have in the classic games; after all, who doesn't like being badass, fast, and golden yellow while breezing through levels effortlessly? And Sonic could fly! I know I can't be the only one to thing Sonic flying was the most badass thing in the world, especially considering how he was already so swift and efficient already. Fuck yeah.

As it seems, though, I've grown less obsessed with using Super Sonic all the time as I've grown older. I don't like how you're forced to use him at inconvenient moment in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3—it feels wasteful. Maybe this was a part of the system of checks and balances present when it comes to the power-ups in the games, but I much prefer how Stealth handled the Super Sonic scheme—B+C for transformation, B+C to de-transform, and double-tap being left alone entirely. It allows you to make much more strategic with your transformation, and eliminates the possibility of accidentally wasting it.

Super Sonic is still a guilty pleasure, though, and fun to mess around with every so often. :)

I loved being able to actually FLY through the levels as Super Sonic in Megamix. Whoever programmed that in is completely awesome.

Plain old Super Sonic in S3&K is always pretty fun, but sometimes it really does spoil the game to the point where I enjoy alternating between sparse usage of Super Sonic and total usage of normal blue Sonic. I never really grew onto the Hyper forms, though - in fact, sometimes I prefer beating the game by collecting all Chaos Emeralds by the time I reach LBZ, entering MHZ, depositing the emeralds in HPZ, and never bothering with getting the Super Emeralds. That way, I still get a good ending without being able to use Super Sonic or any other transformation.

The one transformation that I actively disliked was Super Tails. This one took cheapness to a totally new level, though it did make DEZ's act 2 boss a tough one.

    Working on my art!
This is why in Sonic 3 and Knuckles I make 8 different save files. 2 for each character, one file has all Super Emeralds, and the other has all Chaos emeralds. This way I get to pick which form I'd prefer (Kinda sucks as Tails with all chaos emeralds though. Not doing anything there).

Sonic was emasculated in the transition to 3D, and that's the reason they need Shadow for the "badass" posture.

    I do this as well.

That said, Super Knuckles looks awesome in that save pic.
