Well it could've been Dust Hi...*murdered*
Desert Cavern Zone (the mock-up did show a caverny bit).
Genocide City Zone (seriously. The zone in the mock-up looked kinda like there could have been deserted houses further on...to me it did anyway)

Nah, I believe it was your average metallic world. It makes sense that it got scrapped for another Metropolis act.

To get into the spirit unleashed by Jayenkai:
Brenda's Nightmare Zone
Maybe that could have some dialogue too
"- Nobody Likes My Zones...
- Not Only Your Zones Brenda, We Don't Like You At All" Zone
Let's Make People Think That There Was A Desert Level By Making Some Mockup Zone

As I said in the first post, I still haven't got any info on this from any of my contacts so I don't even know if I'm ever going to be told about that.

Rocky Hill Zone
Sandy Ruin Zone
Fiery Dune Zone
Wait, the question was "how was the desert zone called"... during development? Then my guess is:
the desert level
All lower cases. "Level" instead of "zone". Because during development, they probably cared more about what the zone was about (static) rather than what it was named (tentative).
A tech member not hiding information? INCONCEIVABLE :P

I think they're just jealous of the fact that we have access to a multi-terabyte porn archive and the Windows XP source code.
