Well, I just watched the first episode. That was the worst anime I've seen in a long time. Maybe I'll give it another chance if somebody can convince me otherwise... when there's another episode available, anyway.

Well, you got three months to make that decision. Apparently this anime is SO Low-Budget that they're only making one episode at a time.

So it looks like the anime, Aoi Sekai no Chushin de, finally premiered this weekend. The main character, Gear (aka Sonic), is supposed to be the savior of the Segua Kingdom against the Ninterudo Empire in the land of Consume.

I read about this earlier and thought it could be interesting and then completely forgot about it until I stumbled upon it browsing through Crunchyroll. As a piece of anime, it's not all that great. But it's kind of funny and entertaining since it doesn't take itself very seriously. At the very least, the easter eggs and homages they have in there about the console wars back in the early 90's are fun. I never played Fantasy Zone, Phantasy Star II, or Columns (there are characters in the anime based on those games) but Gear does feel like Sonic more or less.

The only thing that really hurt was
Spoiler

I think the first episode is only available to premium members until this coming Saturday, at which point anyone can check it out. While it's pretty derivative and over-the-top on fan service, going into it with low expectations makes for a fun watch. It's cool to see a different interpretation of Sonic, even though Tails (and Sonic to a degree) are drawn in the bishounen, "pretty boy" style while Mario looks over the top, muscular and masculine (maybe it's the mustache?). But I mean after the first episode, it seems anyone who takes this seriously is completely missing the point. Has anyone else checked this out?

I wrote a pretty lengthy review about this anime over my Tumblr account for those interested.
Basically, I hated it. Yeah, I thought it was pretty cool seeing a different interpretation of Sonic, but the rest of the show is just piss-poor awful.

Oh.

I used to watch anime a lot before I got sick of all the fanservice. I thought, you know, maybe I was actually going to watch this one. It seemed interesting enough. Thanks for saving my time, haha.

I can't disagree on any of the points you made. As a person who's into anime, I can definitely agree in that it's really bad. As soon as the plot kind of hop, skipped, and jumped over logic, I had a feeling there was no way it could turn out to be serious. Then the fan-service came and I knew it for sure. I guess I'm more forgiving of it (probably too much) because Sonic is in it and there is so much anime that's being made for the sole purpose of cashing in on merch (which isn't a problem until the story, characters, and overall quality suffer and it becomes a standard in the industry) so I didn't expect it to be "good". I try and look at it as bad anime in the 90's that weren't very good overall but "endearing" for other reasons.

(This is less of about me defending it and more of a means to justify me probably watching the rest of it haha)

There's already a topic on this in the Sega Retro forum. But from what I heard it's really bad.

Just saw it, and it's pretty...meh. Not bad, but not great neither. It pretty much filled with a lot of fanservice, and the designs definitely look like something out of DeviantArt. Though, not all the designs are bad. they're just mostly weird. That Tetris dude though, yeesh, what a pervert. I'll watch it, but mostly to see how they tackle the other characters. I'd give it...I dunno, maybe a 5.5 or 6/10 for now.

Here's my review of the first episode. Warning: Spoilers. Spoilers: It sucks. Also it's probably NSFW due to the screencap that I added to my reivew. :specialed:

"Everyone else assumes it's Amy Rose, so we'll go with that"
Nope, it's defiantly Nei from Phantasy Star II, she looks nothing like (not even pink) and does her claw attack from PSII in the intro even.
