So it looks like the anime,
Aoi Sekai no Chushin de, finally premiered this weekend. The main character, Gear (aka Sonic), is supposed to be the savior of the Segua Kingdom against the Ninterudo Empire in the land of Consume.
I read about this earlier and thought it could be interesting and then completely forgot about it until I stumbled upon it browsing through Crunchyroll. As a piece of anime, it's not all that great. But it's kind of funny and entertaining since it doesn't take itself very seriously. At the very least, the easter eggs and homages they have in there about the console wars back in the early 90's are fun. I never played Fantasy Zone, Phantasy Star II, or Columns (there are characters in the anime based on those games) but Gear does feel like Sonic more or less.
The only thing that really hurt was
I think the first episode is only available to premium members until this coming Saturday, at which point anyone can check it out. While it's pretty derivative and over-the-top on fan service, going into it with low expectations makes for a fun watch. It's cool to see a different interpretation of Sonic, even though Tails (and Sonic to a degree) are drawn in the bishounen, "pretty boy" style while Mario looks over the top, muscular and masculine (maybe it's the mustache?). But I mean after the first episode, it seems anyone who takes this seriously is completely missing the point. Has anyone else checked this out?
