By the way, if somebody is willing to make the HD graphics for Sonic 1, please make his arm detachable so the body can be used for Sonic Crackers too. =P

Is this going to be specifically for Sonic 2 only? Or can it do anything through Gens?

Well if its anything like Rice's video plugin for Project 64 It'll work on all Genesis roms.

    Working on my art!
There's a plugin that makes the N64 games look better on that emulator? Any link?

All the info you need. And it doesn't have to be PJ64; it probably also works on any reasonably modern N64 emulator (like 1964).

On-topic: Can't wait to see how well Sonic 2 HD works out. I always thought Genesis emulators were unlikely to include hi-res graphic replacement due to how the console works, since it doesn't work with individual 'textures' like in 3D graphics.

    being an asshole =P
Maybe we could get the emulator do the normal thing except rendering, then we look at the stuff in memory and do our own rendering. Would that be OK? Because now that I think, unless the hi-res version matches the mapping of the old graphics, it won't work, or at least it would be harder.

I'm incredibly impressed Yarharhar, spectacular work.

If you guys decide to go ahead with this, please form a nice big team and collaborate together on it. A community driven endeavour would be wonderful. If you decide to use your own engine, be sure to consult Taxman for advice since the physics he has applied in Retro Sonic are very close indeed to the original Sonic games (You'd save a lot of time by simply asking him for the stats, rather than trying to figure them out yourselves through trial and error).

With graphic replacements you have to create the graphics for each specific ROM or it only has the original tiles in the ROM to work with.

Between Yarharhar doing characters and True_Dude doing level art this could easily be awesome as fuck. Please keep at it.

True_dude didn't make that, unless he is also known as "Alchemist Defined".

I was assuming True_Dude made it since he provided the link and didn't say otherwise...

Nope. It was posted in the hoaxes forum not too long ago: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=9668

In fact, that's what the whole premise of this topic was—making something like that a reality. =P

Actually, I wonder if we can contact the guy who made that and see if he's willing to help? That'd be awesome!

  13. Found his website and his myspace, but can't find any form of contact other than some myspace IM thing on his page.

Even if he can't be contacted, there might be somebody else (at our known Sonic forums) able to make good backgrounds as well... It's not like that pic, as nice as it looks, is featuring the best possible HD background ever for Death Egg.

Somebody with good CG skills might indeed be able to outbest it, we just need more examples of what other people can do.

Somebody should explain that guy what fixed point or a LUT table is. No offense, I'm sure he put his effort on doing that page, but that info is kind of out-dated nowadays.

  17. If you're referring to the link Rolken posted, "that guy" would be Upthorn (together with Nitsuja), though I don't really see much wrong with the page :S. Also, doesn't LUT table expand to look-up table table? :P

Yes, what's so wrong with the RAS syndrome :P Well don't get me wrong, I do respect the work that has done there, but I believe the inner workings of the engine are better known nowadays. It's just that nobody can't be bothered has time to write about it :P

That page is on TASvideos, and as such was aimed at comprehension and exploitation of the game engine as it applies directly to gameplay. The specific relevance in this topic was that it tells you almost everything you need to know to make a faithful imitation of Sonic physics. I'm sure lookup tables and such subjects are greatly useful for certain applications but you might as well walk into a candy store and complain that they don't sell hamburgers.
