After a little scare I have decided to release what I have. I know I am out of my league for best overall hack, but hopefully I can win the custom art trophy at least. So let us go!

Flicky Turncoat DX is based on my mini hack, Flicky Turncoat. I have decided to actually make a full game out of it, however you still can only play the first zone so far. If you never played it, basically all the little animals you release from the badniks have turned against you, and now HURT YOU. Stealth is key if you don't want to get hurt. Only attack enemies as a last resort, if you are lucky you can nick them or bounce away before the little animal gets you. Even then doesn't that seem a little...unfair? That is what the shield is for. Grab a shield, and the little animals can't hurt you, and it plays like a regular Sonic game. Beware though! Regular rules apply. Projectiles and running into badniks can make you loose your shield. What is worse, there is only one shield monitor per act, so if you are collecting rings for the emerald monitors, you want that shield. Oh yeah! Emerald monitors. One per act. Breaking it while having 50 rings gives you an emerald. There is also one life monitor per act, hidden away. Can you find them all?

As you can see, I have decided to make the art in an isometric style. I wanted to give the feeling of actually running along on a field, so there are many wide open areas. Speaking of fields, I have decided to try more of a hand at originality and do a theme nobody would even think of doing: Baseball Zone. Yes! Now you can experience the wonder that is dodging baseballs and jumping over spike tipped bats! Let us meet the opposing badnik team!

Concession Charlie: All this scruffy turtle wants to do is feed Sonic. Unfortunately, his selection has gone quite stale and instead hurts hedgehogs. Shoots Crackerjacks.

Pitcher Plant: This zany mess of vines and machine can blend in with the scenery, so be careful! Only his blinking yellow eyes give him away. Throws Baseballs.

Bomblur: A badnik from Triple Trouble! Here? Yes! It loves to be near springs as much as it loves sneak attacks. Moves horizontally and vertically.

???: Reach the end of the zone to meet the villain of the hack. That is...IF you can make it to the end.

    ---
Oh one more thing I forgot to mention! Spikes are now megaman spikes. Basically, they are the reverse spike bug. Yeah. Forgot to warn you.

Now with video. (Warning! Spoils boss!)

J.League PK Party, a "penalty kick" minigame.
It looks like it's the same kind of hack than Sonic 2XL : a little change in the game concept and you got a whole new challenge. It would be funny to add a cutscene showing why the animals don't want to be set free from their badniks. But the idea itself is already funny and interesting at the same time, it reminds me of the chicken in Zelda that attack you until you are dead or out of their area, if you hurt them.

Alright, just played through the first zone and I must say, it really looks good! I especially like the little hidden gaps here and there.
However, no hack is perfect, so I'm listing a few things I kinda disliked:
    • The boss was WAY too fucking hard, to be honest. I mean, I'm a save state player, but this was the first time in a while I actually needed them.
    • The Metal Sonic Monitor. I was like "Uhm, Ok, a floating monitor icon, that hurts you. Makes sense."
    • The enemy, that shoots a bullet like thingy confused me a lot, as the hidden points sound was always played when they shoot. You might want to replace that with something... "better".
    • And, lastly, the actual flickies concept. I know this is what this hack is made up, but when you are also smashed down with unknown enemies and new levels, you will get frustrated. I'd suggest you at least make an option to enable/disable it on the Title Screen or something
That said, a really good start for a hack, but you may wanna look in the listed points.

Well, you aren't alone Selbi. To quote my iRL tester more or less "This is something the Angry Video Game Nerd would complain about. I know it and YOU know it." He loved the art and was suprised at the music selection though. For the boss... + - you aren't trying to hit him right away when it starts attacking right? You have to wait until it slows down. When I released the mini hack, I was told by the players that they rushed in and got hit on purpose to get a free hit on the boss, sadly. Anyway, once it slows down, run to the right of the arena. THAT is where you should start to attack. Watch the pattern of the ball swinging. If it looks like the ball is going to start "popping in" right under your feet, simply flee to the left, and wait a bit until there is open space there again. Hope this helps.

Act 3 has a garbled object that stays on the screen. Other than that, another interesting hack has been posted to Sonic Retro. Good ideas executed in a decent way.

That is a temporary glitch, sorry about that. All it is is the emerald object. You got an emerald in act 2, so the code thinks the next screen is the special stage results screen. I left it in for now because it is the only way to confirm that you indeed got the emerald. I will remove the code when I figure out for good how to set the emerald count up on the screen, though it might have to come to the point of editing either SCORE or TIME.

Sounds like part of "Back to the Industry" from Streets of Rage 2. Interesting music choice.

That boss is omghard. Perhaps slow down the first few spins?

Nope, Under Logic. Which I heard was based on a song called "Move Any Mountain."

That works for my longterm music choice for this hack. As for the spinning of the boss, it DOES slow down. I spoilered how to beat it in one of my posts above.

I knew it was something from Streets of Rage 2. Your spoiler text was right; I did originally rush in for an invincible hit on the boss; after making my post, I also discovered that it slowed down, and that to the right of the boss was a good spot. Avoiding the Pocky while waiting for it to slow down and not getting hit by the large hitboxes of both him and the boss was a bit aggravating at first until I figured out the timing.

    Also, after beating the boss:

I was well aware of that one as well. It always happens when that screen comes up a second time. However, I have no idea why it happens.

A few things I hate are where you can take the path under the grass into a pit of death. Also there are a few collision bugs with the flickies and the boss swinging ball.

The art is amazing, the background scrolling is also neat. A baseball arena wasn't done in a sonic hack AFAIK, but if done correctly it could turn out to be perfect. I also like the flashing signs.

You were traveling underground, and suddenly see a sinkhole. What did you THINK was going to happen? :v:

Anyway, I'm glad people are finding the hidden routes on their own.

I have updated my hack a bit. There is now a proper emerald counter via the seconds on the timer. Also, speaking of time there is now no "time over" which will be useful for the later zones. Regular play doesn't link to Ricky Illusion yet as it is not finished.

I got somebody to Lets Play my hack. A no information run, if you will. Unfortunately, he hates the hardness of it all and condemns it, even though I gave him my most up to date version WITH THE FIXED COLLISION. Lots of "WTF IS THIS? WTF? ARRG!" Oh, and he also misnamed my hack, calling it "Turnabout Flicky DX" instead of Flicky Turncoat DX.

In short, prepare to watch somebody violently scream my name for 12 minutes. :argh:

  16. The graphics need a lot of work. For that new ground perspective to work, objects that are in direct contact with it such as the monitors and springs should have their sprites changed to match the new perspective, otherwise it looks really odd. Ideally, moving platforms should have that perspective as well. Also, the whole thing is very repetitive, you need something to break the monotony. The background grass is too similar to the foreground grass, which can be pretty confusing, and if it's supposed to be a field that extends all the way to the foreground it should have the proper deformation to indicate that.

I have been listening. Besides the fixed animal collision that you can see in the lets play video, I have been trying to fix the complaints both the LPer, you, and others have been saying.

Blind falls for example. A simple ring trail should do the trick.

Speaking of blind falls, you can expect to see more informational signs in my next zones. There is danger if you go down this pipe!

...Which ends up here. Please note I still have to fix the graphics on the disintegrating platform to something that fits the color choices.

I have added more shields to each act. Instead of 1 shield per act, there will be two to three.

Yes, I have considered to have ALL the objects be isometric. Hopefully, that will happen.

Not here, but I have been given complaints with the title screen music, despite it being from the Flicky game. I might change it to something else.

I dread to ask, do you hate the boss music?

The background/foreground issue. Should the background have smaller blades of grass? Is it not dark enough?

Do you like or hate the spikes? Would you like an option to turn the instant kill megaman spikes off?

    Hmm...anything else?

Why do spikes insta kill me?
I don't have a problem with bottomless pits, but I don't like how I willingly stepped into a bottomless pit because I didn't know it was, in fact, a bottomless pit.
And that boss is ridiculous. I honestly stopped trying after the first death.

Otherwise, I like the potential for this.

I feel that I have been neglecting this thread. Mainly because I hoped by the time I update the thread I would have a new release. I don't. Why? Because I feel it is not ready yet. If you have been keeping up, my updates have been scattered about.

You can also notice my snags at the Q/A thread. I do have multiple act exits that go to different paths in the hack, and it works except for a -slight- bug. Object learning is going sorta okay, now only if I can just properly delete it.

I have been fixing up trouble spots for people, making them slightly easier. The above picture for example. There used to be a enemy that shoots to greet you, however people found it impossible so I switched the spot up. I also will remind you all that you are able to now collect multiple shields, for an extra hit. Signs are also posted for danger, like "DON'T GO DOWN HERE NO STOP STOP STOP" bottomless pits.

Now for a reason to post here. I have changed the regular boss theme. I'm not sure the instruments or even the track is final. Don't worry, the flicky music will be used elsewhere...but that is for the future. What I want is for you all to give input. Do you like it? Do you hate it? What instruments should I change? Should I switch back to the original?
