I'm impressed that this is getting localized, with Ubisoft having the exclusive Tetris license. Unless that finally ended.

I picked up the Japanese PS4 version at some point last year and played through the whole thing, but I guess I'll buy the switch version too since I was thinking of importing one of the handheld versions after playing it on PS4. It's a nice game to kill time with.

Nope. Not even 3DS. It's stupid as shit, too. Doubly so in that they're going to try using sales of this game to see if it's worth it to bring Chronicles over.

I can understand not bringing it here on PS3, Wii U, and Vita, but no XBOne port? No 3DS? Only one console that actually had it in Japan, and one with a current install base of 0?

    Stupid. Sega, y'all are stupid!

Eh, fuckit. I literally just got done playing through the (main) Adventure mode on my freEShopped copy of the JPN 3DS release earlier today (didn't do any of the DLC stuff yet). I can wait for the inevitable backport of the localization, as there was already a translation project underway that will be helped out massively by this release. Hopefully they'll even get the audio for a full dub.

I can imagine that they might not be able to justify porting it to Xbox One, a console of which its audience generally doesn't seem to care as much for niche Japanese games as people who own a PS4 or Switch would. And it does make sense for them to localize the version of the new Nintendo handheld that doesn't have any other puzzle games yet instead of the old handheld with more competition.

Except, you know, the approximately 40,000,000 potential customers who already own a 3DS that isn't in Japan? For a title they'd literally only have to insert text, textures and audio files for?

It's like Sega is aping Nintendo at having a money allergy.

    Here's my prediction:

Puyo Puyo Tetris will sell like crap in the West, because PS4 owners that wanted it bad enough already picked up the import for their region-free console, and Switch owners are going to be few and far-between, based on the lackluster reaction to the Switch presentation, and it will be seen as justification to not localize Puyo Chronicles.

Oh cool lemme give you my hot take on this:

Okay, so, 60 million (your 40 million owner stat is incorrect) people have bought a 3DS. However, this does not mean 60 million potential customers. You have to consider that: a lot of these people probably don't use their 3DS anymore, third party games generally don't sell anywhere near as well as first party games on Nintendo platforms, that Puyo Puyo is an incredibly niche franchise with little western appeal outside of a small fanbase, and that people who want a portable version of Tetris would probably just get the free version on their phone instead of the $29.99 version on the thing they pretty much only play Pokemon on. The amount of people who own a 3DS isn't the same as the amount of potential buyers for a 3DS game. Especially not for third party games. All that considered, it doesn't sound likely that the game would sell well on the system. Especially with mobile being a thing.

Nobody outside of diehard fans with money to spend will import the game on PS4. The game is physical only on PS4, so it can't be bought on the Japanese PSN store and be downloaded. People will have to pay for expensive shipping and customs fees on top of the game, which is a dealbreaker for a lot of people (including me).

People who buy the Switch at launch will have very few games to buy. They'll probably get Zelda, but outside of that there's very little on offer. Meaning Puyo Puyo Tetris has far more potential to stick out than it would on something like 3DS where people will more likely look at the best sellers released in the past six years. It's also a great example of a game that would work well as a local multiplayer game that can be played on a single Switch in portable mode. Meanwhile on 3DS local multiplayer is a bit of a harder sell cause the other player needs a 3DS as well for it to be possible.

Lastly, considering that the game is only being released on two platforms in the west, I can't imagine Sega America's budget for this localization beign all that high. So when it comes to platforms on which the game would likely sell without needing to advertise it too much, they probably made the right choices.

EDIT: Almost forgot to tackle this: online fans thinking a press conference wasn't well presented probably isn't going to impact sales all that much. If it did, Wii would have been a disaster because of how often people disliked Nintendo's press conferences back then. Not like the Switch press conference had a lackluster reaction though. Maybe it did on echo chambers like NeoGAF and this very forum, but certainly not from the 85k people who bothered to rate it on Youtube:

I stated roughly 40 million outside Japan.

The 3DS has a little over 22 million sold in Japan, where Puyo Puyo Tetris has had slightly under 3 years to sell (Feb. 2014 release). I mean, yeah, not all of those are still working or in-use today, but there's clearly numbers there. Further, the 3DS is region-locked, so those that wanted it outside Japan had to hack their system in order to play it.

It's a little harder to track down by-region numbers for the PS4, but they have about 53 million worldwide. However, Puyo Puyo Tetris has had since Dec. 2014 to sell, and since the PS4 is region-free, that also hurts its potential sales in the West, since, as you said, its main audience in the West is niche, and likely is prepared to pay a premium for an import.

When it comes to the Switch presentation, it's not just internet fans/haters thinking it was lackluster. Nintendo's stock price dropped roughly 6% on the heels of the presentation, so I can't see how that can be spun as any kind of good news.

The only way Nintendo would have impressed investors is if they ditched console gaming altogether and went mobile only. Not like that matter here though, company stock always drop when a big announcement is made. It has nothing to do with being impressed or not. And again, people generally seem to have liked the presentation. Whenever there really is an internet outrage over how bad something is there'll be a huge amount of dislikes for a video. See Metroid Prime: Federation Force. But in this case the complaints seem limited to people on certain forums. And forums are echo chambers and no indication of the general reaction to something.

And you're overestimating the amount of people who would pay a premium for an import. Also, me being wrong about the amount of people who own a 3DS in the west doesn't change the point I made.

I've noticed that the latest trailer hasn't been posted so...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9nyFL3UPoI

For the record, the tutorial talked about in this trailer has three categories, Puyo Puyo, Tetris, and Fusion (PuyoTetMix), further divided by "beginner", intermediate", and "advanced". The tutorial goes into different concepts that range from simple stuff like how to rotate, to more complex concepts like how to transition in Puyo Puyo or how to T-spin in Tetris. Only problem with the tutorial is that, unlike past games, there isn't any mode dedicated to you learning these techniques. Puyo Puyo!! 20th Anniversary for example gave you a set of challenges designed to teach you about different subjects via trial and error. So if you want to practice anything the tutorial talks about, you'll need to either use the dedicated endless modes or exploit the 20 chain limit trick in a verses match against a CPU.

If you have a Switch, you can get a demo of the Japanese version from the JP eShop.

It's a nice demo. You can even play 4-player multiplayer if you want. Feels a little silly to give out an unlimited demo that gives you the whole meat of the game in one place, but hey, I'm not exactly complaining...

So...The US Switch physical version comes with keychains in it's box, but apparently, exclusively at Target it also comes with two sets of decals.

Anyone buy the game from Target? Key chains + decals are only from first print copies though.

Only the Switch version came with the keychains, I'll edit my post.

EDIT: Assuming you haven't taken any of them off, mind scanning them for Sega Retro?
