I'm willing to bet that the Sonic sprite featured here is what was used in most mockups. That would help tremendously with trying to get a better pallet for such things like the DHZ mockup photo and old GHZ mockups.

interesting. if what I've read so far is true, then Casino night never had original badniks for it in the first place and it just took the Crawl Badnik from Rock world.

I've been thinking that the team behind Sonic 2 8-bit also had the same development documents as the sonic 2 Megadrive team since this topic over here: http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=36719

Some of the Sonic 2 8-bit levels fit the themes of some of the levels that never got made for Sonic 2 16-bit, but still had concepts for them.

It's a bit difficult to say what the situation was with the 8-bit version of Sonic 2, but given that it was built by a different developer in a different country, I'm really doubting there's much overlap. Coincidences, sure, but I don't think they were sharing gameplay ideas (which might explain why Tails is barely in the game).

Point to note: even the bits that the 8-bit Sonic 2 does share (a few Tails graphics in the title cards and a similar title screen) weren't there in the autodemo. It's almost as if they got a call mid-way through from Sega that said something like "PUT TAILS IN IT", not really knowing what Tails was going to do. The game has far more in common with Sonic 1 on the Mega Drive than Sonic 2.

As for the lobster - that's what lobsters look like.

possibly, but I wouldn't be surprised if they started out with the same material. It would explain a few things like why Sonic 2 8-bit was way more different from Sonic 2 16-bit compared to sonic 1 8-bit to sonic 1 16-bit.

by start out with the same material, I mean stuff like a sample of badnik concepts and the zone ideas shown in the topic about Hirokazu Yasuhara since many sonic 2-8bit zones match up with some of the ideas on the different maps he showed.

Sonic 2 8 bit and Sonic 2 16 bit share some obvious similarities.

The most obvious one about the levels is how Green Hills is basically Emerald Hill, and Sky High is basically Hill Top. Both zones share the same colors, the same checkerboard pattern, the same overall theme. And one is the recolor of the other.

I don't think this is only a coincidence. Maybe the lobster isn't one too.

I concur, the similarities to EHZ and HTZ seem too obvious. It seems to me that while they didn't try to make 1:1 copies of the 16-bit levels, they took inspiration from them.

I also agree that the other levels have similarities to scrapped 16-bit levels, coincidence or not. Madness Mountain/Rock World may have inspired Under Ground (especially from looking at the Autodemo version, with the structures at the top), and/or Gimmick Mountain. Aqua Lake has similarities to Blue Lake/Ocean (the concept of submerged ruins in a lake) and Tropical Sun/Summer (mountains in the bg with waterfalls coming out of them and feeding the level's water). Similarly, Scrambled Egg has similarities to Hidden Palace, being a cave with tubes and sparkling gems (assuming that's what the pixels with the cycling palettes in Scrambled Egg's background and walls are supposed to be).

Actually....isn't the title screen pallet for sonic basically the same thing? Have we had it from the beginning?

What Spinny & Spike CD? Never heard of such a thing...

  13. Hey, kinda off topic: where can I find Sonic 2 palette colors? I want to know if OOZ and HPZ share the same CPs.

It's part of this haul isn't it? There's floppy disk images for all the Sonic 2 and B-Bomb stuff, but I've seen nothing for Spinny & Spike other than a few resized images and some animated GIFs.

And I can't really use those.

Well okay I can but I'd rather have the raw contents.

The Spinny & Spike stuff is in the floppy labeled "PC Disk", there's nothing more than that as far as I know.

EDIT: There was also some stuff released by Chris Senn a while ago but, as I noted earlier in this thread, it seems that the original sprite sheets were lost with his old message board.

Well, it's not in this zip:

So where should I be looking?

Those are outdated and have the wrong colors. Correct ones are here, with partial and full transparencies:

It looks like he just forgot to convert two of the disks ("pc disk again" and "tom payne dpaint"), but the raw disk dumps are all there so somebody else can do it, I guess:

Yes it would be a good idea if someone who knew what they were actually doing could do this for the benefit of Sega Retro.

This is perhaps a stretch but anyone see some resemblance with the beta buzzer and the mysterious unused enemy on the Martin 8-bit Sonic 2 cover, particularly how they both point their thrusters downwards presumably to hover in place?

The cover art buzzers' jets however more closely resemble the used 16-bit variant, though the color scheme is still off. Not to mention the lack of antennas of the cover art variant matches neither.
