This has been bugging me for absolutely ages now, and I can't seem to find this anywhere. I'm posting about this so I can lay it to rest in my head. I distinctly remember during my teenage years - which is late 90s to early 2000s, or the Sonic Adventure-era - a programme which me horrified me that someone would think Sonic's speed was due to him taking drugs (I think specifically [unsurprisingly] the "speed" drug [despite the fact that "speed" doesn't make you go faster]); though I could be remembering wrong. I didn't have SkyTV back then, so only the terrestrial channels; I'm not sure if we even had Channel 5 back then! I would guess it was a Channel 4 thing, as only they really did dumb ideas like this - but I could be wrong. It was probably a computer games review show like Bits, but I can't for the life of me remember which one of them it was. Does anyone else know what I'm talking about, or remember something along these lines? Looking back now, I can certainly understand why people might think Sonic has been on drugs by the way he looked and acted! Especially compared to his more innocent-looking image of the classic era.
Probably not what you're thinking of at all, but the only time I can remember SEGA talking about that was in an early US Dreamcast ad, where a basketball player tells Sonic to, "Stay off the light speed!" GamesMaster would still have been going as late as 1998, I'm struggling to think of any other terrestrial videogame shows at the time. I'm pretty sure Bad Influence had finished by then, and Games World & Gamezville were both on Sky.

It definitely wasn't that (I've never seen it before); I do remember they seemed to make quite a big deal about it, and it showed clips from the intro to Sonic Adventure. I think it may have also talked about Mario and the idea of him using "magic mushrooms"... all possibly along the lines of "what are video games teaching children [about drugs]?". It may have been later than early 2000s, but not too much later on. It was in that era anyway; sorry I can't be of more help than this. I was hoping someone else might've seen or remembered about it.
The first thing that popped into my head, for whatever reason, was perhaps a news story/documentary on ecstasy tablets as they often feature(d) videogames and perhaps Sonic/Mario designs.
