Does anyone else besides me think Sonic 3 has really shitty level design? Levels like Marble Garden just seem so long and random, like they didn't plan the layout and just plopped platforms in the most bizarre places.

I'm not too fond of Sonic 3's level designs myself, they're better than Sonic CD but not nearly as good as Sonic 2.

    Get out.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is the epitome of ingenious level design. Period. I've yet to play a game with better designed levels than Hydrocity or Carnival Night.

Best in the series. To this day, I'm still uncertain as to weither or not I've seen every path there is to take in the game.

Yeah, I agree it has some intresting level layout's and plenty of alternative paths. There's a couple poor ideas in there, but they just serve to make the game harder, not such a bad thing.

S3K (and S3 alone, too) has one of the best level designs out of all 2D platformer games, period.

And furthermore, what do you intend to get by posting such bullshit on Sonic Community forum? And sure it's a nice way to waste your trial posts, eh?

S3+ had genius level design, much better than anything seen in S1 or S2.

Probably the best, and well thought out level design I've seen in any 2D game. It's simply amazing.

Edit: I am this close to trashing this topic, but I'll hold off for a bit to see where it goes.

What the hell? I looked through his posts and his not that bad. In his opinion he feels that the levels are crap, so that is a reason to not approve of him? He doesn't write like a turd, and his posts are usually nice and long with some good points. Take a look yourself.

OK, I'm not going frighten you all but I know some people who actually think S3K level design is the worst, that levels are way too long and that it affects the gameplay a lot. And those people are far from being retarded. Of course think of them what you want. But I can guarantee you that those people are real and experimented Sonic fans. (and don't start to flame me because of that, it's not may fault :P)

Dioxaz, I hope people don't flame you because your friends have an opinion. I like the level design personally, and its not something to flame people over.

The level design in S3K is brilliant! I've played that game hundreds of times over the years, and TO THIS DAY I STILL find paths that I've never taken before! They had so much thought, heart, and passion put into them, that I don't think the level quality has EVER been so brilliant since... They played well on their old niches, and even created new ones that became traditional in a Sonic game... I love it! I could honestly say I'd never want to hack S3K extensively because in the end, I could never live up to the standards the original set.

As for putting someone in PA for having an opinion... are you fucking high? I'll judge based on stupidity, maybe, but an opinion? How low can you stoop? I'm sure that they're used to speed; simplicity; and the elements of newer Sonic levels (or even Sonic 2 style). There's nothing wrong with that at all - each "style" is excellent in its own respect, and is more than likely to appeal to certain people based on its qualities. Myself, I like both... but S3K had a style that, IMO, can't be replicated, and it'll take someone with a shitload of creativity to try and change my mind.

Also, they're a pretty minority of the fans actually (lol, you beat me). In fact, they're more supporters of the orginal Sonic 1 (or anything before Sonic 2). And they find levels such as Marble Garden and Carnival Night terribly annoying. They often say Sandopolis suffers from its excessive legnth, etc (though I understand them for Marble). I even had the feeling once that the game was a bit overrated.
Of course this doesn't change anything for me. I still like it like I did since the beginning. I still see it as a very good Sonic game, even if these times I tend to prefer Sonic 1.

I cringe when I get to Sandopolis Act 2, I have to say. It's far too "puzzle" like for my taste. Too much jump at the right moment, find the switch, push the....cranking thing. Drives me nuts.

Ah yes. Am I the only one that hates Sandopolis with a passion? Its the only Sonic level I hate in any of the series.

It just seems intimidating - it's actually quite linear, once you figure out the patterns of all the "puzzle" sections. For example, the slide part simply involves jumping on the opposite path twice, which leads you to the loop at the right, where you can move on. If you try jumping every which way, then no shit you're gonna get lost. =P

It's a lot of level wrapping, really... But a damn good use of it.
