Is there any way of disabling Super Sonic in Sonic 2?

    Most of the time I have favored Sonic 1 over Sonic 2 because of one thing; the absence of Super Sonic in the first Sonic game.

    When I play a Sonic game, I prefer to collect all the emeralds before reaching the end credits of the game. Doing that in Sonic 2 however made Sonic turn yellow and "gotta go fast" during at the final stages of the game after collecting 50 rings. In my opinion Super Sonic kind of breaks the entire game and makes it all to easy, making me not wanting to collect all the emeralds just to keep the game being enjoyable.

    The Sonic 3 Complete hack however made me love the Sonic 3 & Knuckles saga at a new level because of the two-button mechanic for activating Super Sonic. Now I was able to still use the shield power-ups without turning yellow. My preferred way of playing the "classic" saga is with the Sonic 1 and 2 hack, but still I have not found a way to disable Super Sonic in this hack.


    I have searched through both Game Genie- and Pro Action Replay codes for a way to permanently disable Super Sonic in Sonic 2 with no luck. I found a way to change the transformation method with a Sonic 2 disassembly through this guide, but I don't suppose I can use this on the Sonic 1 and 2 hack.


    Is there any way to disable Super Sonic in Sonic 2 (preferably in the Sonic 1 and 2 hack) through a simple hex edit, maybe by requiring the ring counter to be 999 instead of 50 to transform? Or is there a hidden Pro Action Replay code that any of you know of that disables Super Sonic entirely in either Sonic 2 or the Sonic 1 and 2 hack?

    For a hex edit, you should be able to disable Super Sonic by searching for...

    4A 38 FE 19 66 66 (S2 REV00/01)
    4A 38 FE 19 66 6C (S2 REV02)
    4A 38 FE 19 66 00 00 94 (Sonic 1 & 2 hack)

    ...in the ROM of your choice, and replacing the first '66' with '60'. For S2 REV01, you should find that at 0x0001AB38.

    It worked!!!

    Well, it's working in the Sonic 1 and 2 hack; I'm getting a red screen of death when running Sonic 2 Rev 01 after changing the hex-values (does not matter for me, I personally only care about the Sonic 1 and 2 hack).


    For testing, I accessed the level select screen in Sonic 1 and 2 by holding down the A-button during startup. After accessing the level select screen, I used the "all emeralds" cheat by playing song 04, 01, 02 and 06 in the sound test, choosing a level and holding down the A-button after selecting a zone. In the unedited Sonic 1 and 2 rom, Sonic became Super Sonic after gaining 50 or more rings. In the hex-edited rom that did not happen.

    (I don't have the slightest idea how anyone could find that hex-value so fast).


    Now I can finally enjoy both the Sonic 1 and 2 hack and Sonic 3 Complete without Sonic turning yellow & must go quickly :v:

    For future reference, that red screen is the game detecting that it's been altered, by doing a checksum. A lot of hacks remove it. Some emulators even fix the checksum for you.
