As the title said, what really pissed you off as a kid about the Sonic games? What was so challenging that at the time (or even to this day) that made these things seemed impossible? I have a few.

Sonic 2 was my first game, as such this one had a number of offenders. Chemical Plant had the rising water elevator sequence in Act 2 that made me go mad. All of Metropolis zone was a bitch, I died constantly. Those seahorses in Oil Ocean... those fucking seahorses. There's one section in Casino Night zone that always screwed me up, it was a U shaped area with an exit on the left with a bunch of bumpers that led you to another U shaped area with more bumpers. Also it took me 9 years to finally beat the Death Egg Zone and I did it as Tails.

Sonic 1 has a number of offenders. All of Labyrinth zone, even to this day, makes me want to rage, as well as Special Stage 3 (I always fear of dying in that level).

Sonic 3... the barrel. That's about it though. Saving made the threats less threatening

In Sonic Adventure it took me forever to beat Hot Shelter as Big since I didn't know where Froggy was. At the same time I didn't know how to beat the Egg Viper, or at least I remember not beating Sonic's story for a while.

In Sonic Adventure 2 I didn't realize you needed to freeze time to go through the water fall in the last level as rouge. My sister actually figured that one out for me.

I mostly raged at my mistakes and sometimes at Tails, metropolis was pain in the arse too for me, mostly me being impatient and tried to rush. Big missions made me pissed off too. I know im not kid right now but lately I did SADX missions and mission 53 pissed me off SO MUCH!

E: Ah yes, the barrel. Everytime I replayed Sonic 3, that part gave me always fear and lots of Time Overs. My MD games were pirated so I had no manuals to look how it was done. Same was with special stages. I had no idea that you could do them into rings and on the 4th ST, the stage went very slow and it pissed me off cause I had to wait so long after every blue sphere. (In the large blue sphere area)

Not where I want to be.
Sonic (?): Coming summer of 2055...?
I've actually never had a problem with Sonic games as a kid, or games in general for that matter. With two exceptions; MiB for the Playstation and Super Mario 64. I could never figure out the latter's star clues, and the former had a second level that stumped me silly.

    ^Not if you elaborate

While unrelated to the topic, that Blast the Wall Away mission in Thwomp's Fortress confused the hell out of me forever.

I sucked at Labyrinth's Zone boss run, so I died there always and several times. Another thing that infuriated me was the sub-boss from Death Egg Zone. Ugh. Thankfully super handled the job well. :colbert: I appreciate challenge when it's well done, so Scrap Brain and Metropolis are okay in my book. However, the seahorse badnik. God damn it, every single one of them.

Sonic 2 still annoys me in general. I dislike most of the zones, though two of my favourites are in it. When I was a child I had no patience for the game and often rage quit when I died. Especially around Aquatic Ruin or Hill Top. These two got on my nerves a lot. Marble Garden was boring but I didn't mind playing through it like these two.

Sonic 2 was also my first game, and I always had trouble with CPZ's rising water section. Metropolis also gave me a lot of issues too though. I also remember getting stuck in the pit as Super Sonic in Mystic Cave Zone (and hopelessly mashing A in frustration), thinking I could just blaze through the level recklessly. It was my last life too.

In Sonic 1 I always had trouble with Labyrinth and Marble.

As for Sonic 3, The Barrel took me about an hour to figure out. However, what did make me rage was the Marble Garden Boss as Tails. Then there's the Big Arms boss, who again, I thought I could just easily blaze through as Super Sonic. I lost all of my lives on that one boss.

Also, am I the only one as a kid who spent a while hitting the Sandopolis mid-boss wondering how many hits it would take?

Am I the only one who enjoys Oil Ocean? Even as a kid I don't remember it being much of a pain.
As a kid I could never do the special stages though, apart from blue sphere and the ones in 3D Blast. At the time I thought super sonic first appeared in Sonic 3
    EDIT: Also that barrel.

Seriously. It's a goddamn nightmare even to this day.

Actually, Sonic Rush's 7th Special Stage was a pain in the ass too.

Of course the barrel in Carnival Night Act 2 made me rage, but the final boss in Sonic 2 still makes me rage to this day. >.< I can beat him, it's just really difficult. :v: And another thing that made me rage as a kid was Chemical Plant Act 2, the part of the level where the water rises. Took me a few years to finally beat the level. :\

    I DONE MAKED GAMES.
Just the entirety of Sonic 3 for feeling totally unfinished. I don't personally see the lock-on cartridge DLC as validating that.

I'm not sure how to elaborate on this, but Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2. How can you not rage as a kid when you have to fight two bosses without getting hit once. Just give me one ring, goddamn.

    THIS MOTHERFUCKER RIGHT HERE
I've had a Game Gear and Sonic 2 for it ever since I was five years old. To this day I have not beaten this boss.

God I forgot about that thing. I hate that boss. That boss was not meant for such a small screen.

I've honestly not had much trouble with Sonic games as a kid. Maybe Sonic 2, I feel that game has the more dickish enemy placements of them all.

Hell, to this day I still don't know how I know how to use the barrel.

As a perfectionist, Sonic Unleashed makes me rage. I honestly cannot get through Eggmanland without dying once.

Come to think of it the only classic Sonic game that had points that made me rage when I was young was Sonic 2. No I didn't have issues in Chemical Plant like many others. Rather, my points of rage were at that damn spike pit in Mystic Cave that I always seemed to fall in (God help you if you're Super Sonic), all of Wing Fortress, Silver Sonic, and the Death Egg Robo.
Wing Fortress was really only a problem for me because it was a level floating over a huge ass giant pit.
Silver Sonic gave me trouble be cause it caused countless deaths and game overs for me before I could figure out the boss pattern.
The Death Egg Robo also caused trouble because I could only face him if I managed to get past Silver Sonic. After that it took countless deaths to finally find out where he was vulnerable and where he wasn't. Not to mention being sent back to Silver Sonic upon each death.

Nothing like going through a whole game right up to the end only to have your ass handed to you and having to restart the whole game.

The damn barrel. I would throw the fit of the century, not to mention that later on would be the Death Egg Act 2 bosses (super rage fit). Though nothing got the cops called on me quite like trying to get an A Rank for Mad Space in Sonic Adventure 2 (volient fits, anyone?), the Biolizard equals a screaming match. Or finding out that Sonic Shuffle is unfair and you wanted to see more of the story, but get screwed over (disappointment anyone?) I have low fustration tollerence and get pissed fast. Which is why I don't play video games as much I used to. And Sonic Heroes was a breaking point, I went off to focus on an Anime/Manga franshise for a long time, which killed all chances for being an oldbie on this scene, but no one here had to witness the horrible mess I got in with some of those Anime/Manga communities (now mostly extinct and dying).

Off Topic - Imagine being good at computers, but easily annoyed when the slightest thing goes wrong.

The barrel is always mentioned a million times over in topics like this, but I had read about it on the internet before I had access to Sonic 3, so hooray for me! :specialed:

Anyway, what really tripped me up as a kid were two specific instances. I had access to Sonic Adventure from age 5, and Sonic 1 from age 7 (thank you SEGA Smash Pack Volume 1!). Big's entire storyline in Adventure, especially Hot Shelter stopped me dead in my tracks as a kid. I just found it so frustrating and was constantly questioning why I was fishing instead of doing stuff like the other characters were. It was a wonderful day when I found that stupid fish in Hot Shelter. Tracking down the lure upgrades to get some of the extra emblems made me quite angry as well.

I have no shame in admitting that despite being able to play it since 7, I never actually beat Sonic 1 until I was about 12. Marble Zone tripped me up for years. I was awful at side-scrolling games, but moreso with Marble Zone. A lot of you guys had Metropolis Zone as a kid, I had Sonic 1's second stage. :colbert: At the time I just couldn't grasp the concept of slowing down and waiting on platforms that often, I suppose, particularly when Green Hill required little of that practice to beat it. Amusingly, something with the sound emulation was a bit odd in Smash Pack if I recall correctly, so the special stage music was quite different from what it actually was. Perhaps it was something with my TV's audio as opposed to the emulation, but I remember playing Sonic 1 on Kega Fusion and going "WHOA! This sounds completely different!".
