    Worked on it a bit more.

    I had a smooth transition gradient set up before but I tried doing the rough transitions just to see how it would come out. I personally liked the results and I'm trying to get it to get a smoother look from it.

    I have done this if somebody wants to use a real star locations. Just take a section and put some more stars in the background as there are billions that are not visible to the eye. These stars are ones that astrologist use in constellations. The blue points make up the iconic Orion's belt. The red point is a real galaxy Andromeda.

    This might help as a guide from stopping the stars looking too fake and might also get rid of the cheap look of brush splatters when using a real picture.

    Chimpo, could you fill in that top diamond as well? It looks off in its current state with just the outline.

    I'd like to see side by side comparisons of the cloud filter diamonds and Chimpo's toon styled ones as well. They both have potential, it's just a matter of seeing how appropriate they are for the stage.

    I look into this, but here's what I have now.

    Changes:
    Modified use of CN's submitted image.
    Removed the cloud effect.
    Added back some of the stars from earlier iterations (on the sides)
    Made the bottom diamonds more hole-like.
    Stronger blue.

    Hey now, I made that image from scratch, including all of the stars ;).

    But really, my suggestion for that image would be to darken the background stars and add brighter stars all around as well. It's basically what I did for my avatar. Here is my image without the rainbow colors, if you guys would rather have that instead so you can add your own effects if you want.

    Personally I think it's too early to start merging things. As they're still just at the "mock up" stage, it's helpful to have them both going in different directions. That way it's easier to see what works and what doesn't. Like working on a logo for instance. You'll never just work on one idea. You'll explore a range of possibilities. So I think it's good to have two separate minds working on two totally separate versions.

    Would it be worth adjusting the colour of the sky (or whatever you call it) a bit for certain stages (just adjust the hue)?

    Or would that be a stretch too far (from the original game)?

    I really like steveswede's sky. Too many stars all over the screen is a bit overwhelming. Need some negative space to keep the balance.

    I'm liking this semi transparent half pipe with the different style of backgrounds. This is something I would love to see put in the game as well.

    @Hamneggs

    It's looking better. It's just those tiles that need working on as they just don't stand out.


    I'm liking Chimpo's. It's a good twist on the tiles.

    If you're in need of mockups, I have this thing I made a while back. It was initially made as a concept for the special stages, but then I got too lazy to animate it and it was finished several months later as a wallpaper.

    That's what I was going to point out. Just as the Special Stage background in Sonic 1 involved an Escher-style mutation between two different backgrounds, the concept in here seemed to be based on that, only non-animated.

    Every diamond comes in pairs, and the opaqueness of both keeps changing as they reach the center of the screen, and once there they start becoming the opposite (windows in a more opaque background, instead of solid diamonds in a clean sky).

    Looks like they ended up adding a few more stars to fill the voids, anyway, so this concept might not be as noticeable in the original background. I hope you guys can pull it.


    EIDT: Oh, I see Hamneggs is already working on that, I should have read the last page too. =P

    Making a Full-Sized Egg Carrier in Minecraft.
    I'm noticing a discrepancy between the size of the backgrounds and the resolution of the project.

    At 16:9, a good chunk of the bottom of the background is getting lost. Perhaps it would be more appropriate to extend the backgrounds horizontally and work with them that way? Personally speaking, I'd like the entirety of the diamonds to be visible, as I feel that the variance between the top and bottom is fairly critical to the feel of the stage. I'm aware it was cut off in the original game, but seeing the part of it that was hidden before really changed the feel of the special stage, and it would be nice to have the part that was missing to be present in S2HD.

    My image is 50% reduced from the PSD file. I can easily adjust it to another aspect ratio.

    During Special Stages, when you have lots of moving things to focus on and a constant wrapping BG, an opaque tube will surely look distracting.
    As per the starfield, I do agree with having a few big stars instead of a thick wall of small ones, it feels much more cartoony!

    Sheer beauty. I'm torn on the idea of keeping the squares/diamonds out. Both would probably look good, but I can't imagine it at the moment.

    Mmm... Guys, I've noticed you're both missing the middle row of diamonds, with partly empty and solid top and bottom halves. Then, from there to the bottom, all the diamonds are aligned differently.

    The design looks a bit more complicated than it seems.



    EDIT: About leaving the squares out of this...
    You know, Hill Top might look better with christmas trees, it's just that it wouldn't be the same.
