Whilst Sonic is definitely in a strong-ish place with a large age bracket, your comparison movie examples don't really work, because their lack of presence was arguably the very reason they got made in the first place.
There was enough of a wait to revive an old IP that's well-known enough to be remembered, but not enough for people to remember if it was actually any good or not.

Sonic isn't in that boat. The average person is well aware that Sonic still is a hit-or-miss IP that has produced more duds than hits in the past decade. It's not had the kind of wait that say- The Chimpmunks had to get people to think "Hey, we haven't seen <x> character in a while..".

I think the movie will have some degree of success, but probably not for the same reasons that TinTin or the others did.

Going up against Star Wars Episode 9 and Frozen 2 also furthers the odds against Sonic.

I'm going to be there in the theatre day one. I want to witness this train wreck on the big screen on opening day. Hoping to enjoy it for the same reasons I enjoyed the Mario Bros movie. Imagine a situation where this is a surprise hit and does well. It'd mean multiple sequels and this becoming a long-running series. Unlikely (this'll probably bomb) but still possible.

I kind of feel a bit sorry for Sega too. In interviews their CEO has made it clear they have very high hopes for this film. Hopes that are probably going to be crushed.

making cool music no one gives a shit about
so this still holds up i guess

But Jim Carrey isn't a confirmed lock yet, is he? They can still pull another "James Marsden instead of Paul Rudd" on us and we'll end up with Kevin James as Robotnik instead.

Yeah Jim's still only in "negotiations" and "talks" and isn't locked yet. He's more likely than Rudd was (from what I gather from that situation, Rudd had interest from the studio and but more or less instantly was like "fuck no") whilst given talks are still on-going with Jim he seems way more interested than Rudd ever was but isn't hard-confirmed just yet. That said I just learned from the film's IMDB page that the director Jeff Fowler worked on "Where the Wild Things Are" (fantastic/beautiful film) which is a positive sign.

Then again the same page also states that Sonic 2019 is his directorial debut (as in, he hasn't directed a film before) so well, that's just not good.

  6. I doubt the people running this are even aware of that. I'm guessing that Sega just sold the rights (?) and some execs just hired some screen writer to write some generic story that could be applied to any CGI crossover.

I could be wrong but it sounds about right

EDIT: took out the drunken rant

Jeff Fowler only worked on Where the Wild Things Are for "animation research and development", which isn't really much of a sign of how good of a director he'd be on this aside from that he knows how to make stuff look nice. He has worked as director on various CG video game trailers at Blur, though finding out which ones he precisely worked on is a bit hard since the people who worked on those are barely ever credited. Blur's portfolio site does mention the directors on a few videos though, and Jeff Fowler is listed on a couple of them:

He directed and wrote this trailer:

    And co-directed this one:

It seems the shooting schedule has been mailed out, with the new logo too? (Source is https://twitter.com/KyroDRX/status/1018141586226581505)

That's pretty cool. Thanks for showing us that. The logo actually looks - good? And "Hedgehog Films" is hilarious. I still can't believe (given we know how ridiculous the story is) that this is a serious thing that's actually going ahead with serious and determined people working on it. It almost had Paul Rudd for Christ's sake. And it's probably going to feature Jim Carrey.

The posts on here when the trailer goes up are going to be a sight to behold. Guessing the trailer might drop at the close of the year or perhaps early next.

And the Hollywood North here: http://www.hollywoodnorth.buzz/2018/07/big-budget-sonic-the-hedgehog-with-jim-carrey-james-marsden-starts-filming-in-vancouver.html

So Jim Carrey seemingly confirmed as Robotnik and a working title of "Casino Night".

    .

As for thoughts on the recent news: The Sonic 2 reference is cool I guess? The production team seem to be aware of the games at the very least? Still expecting this to be a complete clusterfuck in all honesty but I'm in (probably opening night) for Jim Carrey. Hoping for a Mortal Kombat situation where the film turns out unexpectedly good. Though I don't have high hopes.

If Carrey gives a star performance here this could become a cult classic. Or it's just going to be the car crash we all expect. November 2019 is when we find out.
