As far as I understand it, ESE v1 and v2 are able to edit Sonic 1 special stages, however, I am unable to save any of the changes I make. In v1, it just doesn't save. In v2 it gives the error "Invalid Filename"

I am trying to make some cool custom Sonic 1 Special Stages, and I'd rather use a graphical tool than do it manually w/ HEX.

Is anyone else having these problems with Esrael Sonic Editors? Is there a chance that this editor isn't really compatible with Sonic 1 Specials? Any other suggestions for editing these stages?

A big thanks in advance, as I am a turd here and don't want to waste anyone's time.

I think SHWP has support for the special stages. Dunno about ESE.

ESE has a graphical editor for the special stages... it just won't save.

As for SHWP-II, I can't get it to open ROMs on my computer for some reason... I installed the codec, I load the rom, and nothing changes, just the 4 button menu.

Make sure your file is not read-only, not opened at the time etc etc.

Yeh I've checked the obvious things: tried multiple different computers, versions of windows, and virtual machines, used different ROMs.

Can someone try and reproduce this problem? Open up Sonic 1 in ESE II and then go to the special stage editor. Make some changes and hit save. If you don't get an error, see if your ROM file has been modified at all, whether its modified date has changed.

I will seriously paypal someone some cash (10$? more?) if they can get a graphical sonic 1 special stage editor working, and explain to me the setup.

Just tried ESEII, it works like a charm.

Just make sure...

** That your ROM is rev00, in *.BIN format. If it's in SMD format, use something to convert it. (since your ROM isn't working in either SHWP or ESE, I am gussing this is your problem)

** That your ROM isn't open in any other program at the same time.

Just out of curiosity, what version of Windows are you running? And what is the filename of your ROM?

I am pretty sure I am using the original ROM, but perhaps I should download a new copy and try that. It's odd b/c in ESE II I can make edits, I just get that error when I try and save special stages. Other types of edits, palette, etc. do work like a charm, that's half of why this is so strange to me.

Thanks for you help so far everyone!! :worship:

Just make sure you're using a good ROM, and redownload ESE just incase something went wrong there. Both SHWP and ESE (both ESE and ESEII have the editor) should work fine in XP and Vista.

http://www.emuasylum...=475410&ayes=n0 <-- this should be a clean ROM from the Good set.

Tried re-downloading and using this rom. I still get the same error "Invalid Filename" when I try and save... Can't imagine why this is... : \

ESEII also works fine under Windows 2000. I think any NT kernel-system would work with ESE just fine. I've got Windows 98 to work with it too, but ESEI seems to run better. Perhaps try redownloading the software and see where it goes from there.

I use XP and ESE1 will not save but ESE2 will. It may just be a bad installation of VB...
