I recently picked up a ROM of this game. I've never played this, or any Mega Man game before... so its my first MegaMan experience...
What's your feedback on this game? and what do you recommend as far as MegaMan is concerned...?

Lemme start with a promotional pic... I'm sure you'll like it:

For one, it's a bit harder, as MM's sprite is slightly bigger and the robot masters are now invincible when flashing (just like Megaman), which means you can't just go up close and personal to rapid-fire them to death. ("Can't beat Air Man" gets a whole new meaning here. It's a bitch jumping over Wood Man's leaf circle, too.) MM2 defaults to "normal" difficulty now; the US NES version had an "easy" setting which to be honest made the game a bit too easy.

Some levels are downright odd compared to their originals (check out Top Man's stage).

... I personally like the remastered music, though the majority of opinions I've read didn't seem to. It's your call.

By the way, the ROM doesn't save your game. At least the built I've played back in the day never did - three additional robot masters are supposed to be unlocked once you beat the initial 3 games, and I don't think it works without SRAM.

There are two versions: one uses SRAM, one uses EEPROM. Whether it saves or not depends if the emulator supports the specific kind of memory used by that version of the ROM.

Well, I suck at Mega Man. I can't even beat any of the Robot Masters. I started with Cut Man... can't even get past him... I should just stick to Sonic... :(

The redone art and music is pretty nice—though many songs feel like they lack a bit of the "punch" behind the originals—and I really like the Wily Tower concept, but the engine is an absolute mess. I've been told that the game's code is an total nightmare, looking like it was written by an ASM-illiterate team, and boy does it show. The game struggles to maintain a respectable FPS even in the simplest of scenes. Single projectiles are sometimes enough to make it dip. I recommend giving the original NES version a look. They're far smoother and are a lot more satisfying to play as a result.

As for the difficulty, yeah, I had trouble when I first got into the series years ago too. The trick to defeating the bosses is that they all follow some sort of pattern, or have obvious reactions to what you do (such as Fire Man generally walking when you walk and shooting when you shoot). Once you beat one of them, you'll steal their power, and then it's a matter of finding which boss it's strong against. If you want an easy starting point in Megaman 1, I recommend Bomb Man. His level isn't too hard, and his attacks are easily dodged.

Probably the things I enjoyed most about Wily Wars was the music and the graphics~ C:

You didn't exactly make this easy on yourself - it's not that Cut Man's a tough boss, it's just that MM is really rough around the edges and is kind of all over the place regarding difficulty; with the slipperish controls, the increased hitbox, Cut Man's random jumping and the fact that no boss will take damage on flashing frames (even though you hear your shots connect) you just treated yourself to one hell of a duel, especially if you never played any of these games before.

I suggest starting with 2 (Metal Man), or 3 (Top Man, Snake Man), the latter game features boss invincibility even on the NES, so it's kind of accounted for. Or hell, go after the NES roms first, they are way easier. For later games, start with Star Man in MM5 and Flame Man or Plant Man in MM6. Ignore MM4, it's not worth it.

Interesting! So is this documented in-depth, anywhere? I'm kinda anxious to tackle Wily's Tower now.

REV00 is SRAM, REV01 is EEPROM, if I recall correctly. Emulator support for EEPROM is relatively recent, which is why REV01 refused to save in emulators until not long ago. They most likely changed the kind of memory they used for cost reasons.

The only difference between REV00 and REV01 is the savegame code. Don't expect any bugfixes or the like, so if you find REV01 doesn't save, go with REV00.

There is a hack that changes the save format to SRAM out there on RHDN. A simple google search will set you straight. Though I'd never heard of alternate revisions before, that's new to me. I was under the impression that the EEPROM version was the only one. :v:

As for TWW, I like it but it's not as enjoyable as the originals. There were some changes from the NES games that ultimately made them harder games. Whether or not that's for the better... eh, that's for you to decide. I think the remixes are actually better than some of the NES originals (Spark Man's stage being one example). As the others have stated, the originals are a much better starting place to get into the series, and 1 is definitely not the best place to get into the classic series since it's probably the hardest of the classic games. 2/3 are your best bet for that (Not to mention they are the most beloved in the classic series. They also introduce E-tanks which make them a lot easier than 1, since they fully restore health). 6 isn't a bad starting spot though, considering it's one of the easiest games in the series. I have a major soft spot for 7, but a lot of people hate it.

If you're ever struggling with 2, I just recommend taking the cheap way out and killing Metalman first so you can acquire the most broken weapon in Megaman history. It'll give you the Metal blades, one of the most disgustingly overpowered weapons in a Megaman game. It one-shots most things in one hit, fires in 8 directions, has obscene amounts of ammunition at it's disposal (4 shots per ammo bar), and 4 of the robot masters are weak to it. Yeah, Capcom never made a weapon as powerful as that one ever again (Though the Storm Tornado from Mega Man X isn't too far off in terms of usefulness).

Probably the biggest complaint amongst people who frequently play the NES games is that the game is slightly slower. So if you're used to timing attacks on the NES then you will have to do quite a bit of readjusting. Either way the graphics are awesome (except tiny ProtoMan) and most of the Music sounds pretty good. I love the concept of Wily Tower, but I wish they would have let you go back through MM1-3 with all the weapons after beating Wily Tower or something.

I've played this a little bit, and I didn't really like it. I'm a huge Mega Man fan, and I've played the first 3 NES games a lot. So everything is off and it messes me up. Also, the online emulator I was using messed up the graphics. Since I have a normal emulator now, maybe I'll give it another try. Does it work fine in Kega Fusion?

Yes, but make sure you're using the latest version if you ever pretend EEPROM to work. Otherwise you're stuck with REV00.

    What? Don't be silly.
CutMan is cake in the NES version, he takes a decent amount of damage from the Buster in that. In Wily Wars they reduced the amount of damage it did to CutMan down to a measly 1. Best start with BombMan in the Genesis version as they didn't change how much damage he took.

Well, I downloaded it to try it again, put on Mega Man 2, and...I'm less than impressed. It's too slow. Everything about the game is trying to slow me down, when I'm far too used to running in Busters blazing.

AND WOOD MAN SHOULD NEVER BE THIS DIFFICULT!

It's way too slow, and that's due to iffy coding (for the time and platform, at least). It's pretty and dangit I actually do like the music, but it's far too slow to be enjoyable because 3 sprites on screen makes it lag.

It's like this side of Capcom was the anti-Treasure in terms of 68k assembly skillz

Also that Capcom completely seemed to hate Sega and would have stuck all their games exclusively on the SNES if it wasn't because they'd lose quite a large amount of market share. Remember what happened to Street Fighter II? Besides the facts all ports suck (and all were made from scratch by third parties), the original port that Capcom had submitted had to be rejected by Sega because of how horribly done it was.
