I always thought that the color of his body should be the same as in the gates thats on CPZ (http://sanik.hacking-cult.org/inker/inking.php?section=Zones&entity=ChemicalPlant&inking=1222968477)
I think he should still be brighter. More yellow and less orange.

His body looks a tad bit to fat. The stripes and the shading looks pretty good anyway!

Edit: Didnt see the part about the neck, sorry...

    Pretty good shading here!! ;)

About color It's really a warm color, I love it.
However, in the original it seems to use the same yellow from the level for stealth purposes? (or at least Eggman originally designed it for this?)
Try extracting with the eyedropper tool the exact Yellow original color first.

About the body, only thing to say is to correct the upper shape to be more thin on top.
The lower metal plate of his body in the original is divided in two section- lighter / darker metal.

    Nice work.

I have an issue with the original sprites lighting... there is no way the 'spot' on the head would be there with that shadow... or is it me?

    General feedback required.

    Cheers!

Good start Airguitar, and welcome to the project. First off, please try to set personal interpretation of the sprite aside while doing a remastering. Concentrate on getting the basic shapes out (which you've done), and getting the coloring right. Detail work is always the last step in creating art.

For individual critiques, the blue is a harsh contrast to the sprite. Replace with black and then add shading per the guidelines. The main screw is almost twice the size it needs to be, and for shading you'll want to follow what can be seen on the original - darker shadow on the lower right side, light up the upper left. More expansion of the main shadow color on the head as well since it doesn't currently follow an outline like the sprite does. I know you didn't particularly like the highlight, but please recreate it in its original position. The connection area between the head and the base should not be a straight line down, play around with some variations of a curve there. If the general concensus is that artistic license is needed, that's the path we'll take, but only after seeing a faithful 4x remaster. Eyes and pupils, just make them more circular. No real need to comment on the tube/mouth since it's pretty obviously very early WIP.

Again for everyone looking to do art, take a look at the guidelines and remember - shape, shade, detail, in that order!

Thanks for the commments Karma. I'm working off both the the sprite and the artwork (hench the blue dome on the botton) so putting both toghther is harder than I thought... expect an update on Octo on monday.

    Hi Guys,

Just worked up the look for the numbers on the Labyrinth stage that hadn't been done yet.

Please comment and let me know what you think it may be missing.
At present I have stuck to using the gradients but if need be will work a stepped gradient later on.

    Thanks,
    Vijay

It is VERY well done! :)

Don't worry about gradients, you can use them now!
(Without abusing and getting cheap results of course! :) )

Please resize it to exactly match the original 4X Art, it's slightly bigger!

    Hi Vincent,

    Thanks for the comments mate,
is it possible if you can send me a 4X Artwork so I can scale it to fit?
Sorry, don't know what the really means in size terms.

    Cheers,
    Vijay

Don't worry, I'm happy to explain to talented people! :)

Check the pixellated original art you based from:
That art is 4 times bigger than the megadrive original sprite, and it's the resolution we are working on.

Because all the uploaded original art on the Database is already 4X you don't have to resize it!

Just lock the original art on its actual 100% size on Illustrator and place the new vector work to exactly cover it.

Doing this we will immediately insert your new art into the engine! ^^

Those numbers need to look more like they're made out of bubbles, that was the whole point to them looking like that (there's even a frame in Sonic 1 that shows the bubbles half-morphed into the numbers). The outlines need to be thinner, and the reflections less solid.

...Also the shapes are somewhat off, but it's a good start.

Agreed. Vijay, if you go with ICEknight's suggestions, your countdown numbers will be approved in short order.

    Hey I'm back.

I have started to take on board what was said, and here is what I did.

there are still some outlines and stuff that need work (ie - the screw) and the legs are on just to get a feeling of completeness - I'm working on a new set of legs working more off the sprite, not the original Japanese artwork.

    Feedback?

    Hi Guys

Another element, this time its the Bubbles, which are not at the artwork size but will scale later on.

There are two versions, one being more stepped artwork with a slightly transparent band and the other is a full gradient, alpha opacity version again all illustrator artwork.

Let me know what you think.

    Cheers

I'm torn between those two versions. The first looks more like the style of the current artwork (particularly Vincent's Sonic sprites), but I prefer the second version because it looks more realistic

Well the second one would fit uber Sonic's style, after all the project is now accepting tasteful gradients, still I really like Master Emerald's version a lot.

Im torn aswell, I really like ME's version but then again I think Vitay fits in more with Sonic and the badniks.
I do not like the largest bubble's shine though, you could also add a transparency layer on the bubble's shine, similar to the curved shading. But they are fantastic and have a better outline than ME (I think his outline should be thicker)

I like that second style but I think that it needs to use a brighter color like the first one. Also, wouldn't it make sense to do scaling of the bubble rather than have several discrete sizes like in the first example?
