Man this is going to be a heck of a train wreck or a cult classic. I mean don't get me wrong Jim Carrey is a huge get for Robotnik, while I feel he might have to wear a fatsuit he still a great Actor to have. But knowing how videogame movies are the worst of the worst in terms of adaptation I'm 90% sure this movie will be a disaster.
Reminder of how high profile and seeming fit Bob Hoskins was for Mario in that carcrash of a film.... I do not hold any hopes out of this being good.
Very true in that Jim alone might not be able to save this - but also remember that the Super Mario Bros. movie was liked in a "so bad it's good" kind of way and is somewhat of a cult classic nowadays. I think that might be the best we can hope for here. I'd be super shocked if this turns out to be genuinely good. That might be a distant impossible dream. But so bad it's good? Possible.
I highly doubt it's going to be as bad as this: Spoiler
Welcome to Green Hill: https://twitter.com/cartoonmoo/status/1024810780707844097?s=19 Not sure if 1981 is a coincidence or someone messed up when commissioning the sign. Edit: Or did they think 1991 didn't sound old enough so they went with the year Sega started doing arcades?
If you look closer at the Sheriff's car in the background, it says Green Hills btw. Nice homage to sonic 2 8-bit. :P
Yeah, by the Mania for the Mania! Wooh...oops, wrong thread. Meanwhile Disney tries to get the rights to film a documentary about hedgehogs.
That Police Car clearly says Green HILLS. All these news sites reporting this are not paying proper tribute to the glory that is the SMS version of Sonic 2. Quickly, flock to the comment sections to force them to amend this mistake! :v: In all seriousness though, Green Hill is looking a lot more like Sand Hill right now. It'd be nice to see a bit more... Well, Green. Maybe when we see more than a passing population sign. If there isn't at least a little bit of checkerboard somewhere, I will be sorely miffed.
If they were gonna do that, I wish they would have filmed it somewhere tropical. Palm trees instead of pine trees, y'know? i always wanted to see a Canadian themed Sonic world but not like this lmao
God please save us. EDIT: Thinking about it a little more, it's a cool retro-throwback reference and this along with "Casino Night" as the project's code name does suggest the production team are aware of and adhering to the games to some extent - but the film's still suffering from the "live action x CGI mash-up" conceptual critical flaw which just indicates that the movie will be a very probable trainwreck. I stand by what I said. It'll be a Super Mario Bros movie level cult classic and that's probably what we should be hoping for. Because otherwise it's going to be an irredeemable car crash. That said when we inevitably see the trailer for this Retro will be glorious. Can't wait to see the replies on here when that happens.
So surely this film is going to take the route of Sonic being from another dimension, right? Strange that they'd use Green Hill as a sleepy little town in the USA, Earth, rather than a more traditional version in Sonic's home dimension.
Yeah almost definitely. They seem to be going for this quite strange real world and videogame mash-up like calling the town Green Hill and so on but I guess that's the sacrifice given they were so adamant on this being live action in conjunction with CG. Sonic has attempted this before in the games but I'm betting this attempt is going to be super weird and not as elegant as say Station Square in Sonic Adventure. The trailer will probably drop around early next year I would have thought so looking forward to seeing it - even if it's just a train wreck in motion.
I wish we would get an exact date and time on when that first trailer is gonna drop because I would honestly throw a fucking viewing party
It's probably because the name "Green Hills" will trigger nostalgic thrills in your average movie goer in a way that Station Square wouldn't. I doubt it will have loops and things. It will probably be like a regular town.
If they don't change the release date I imagine Paramount might release a trailer around May and plug it in front of Detective Pikachu.
Can we just get the fact out of the way that they won't show Sonic in the first trailer? You know they wont! We'll get a peek at Jim Carey as EGGMAN first. I just hope we get E.G.G.M.A.N. from SA2 back.
Going straight for the easy references. Cool. Chemical Plant (or a reference to) basically confirmed now. :v:
I don't think they'll even show him in the first posters. Maybe just a silhouette or part of his body without showing the face.
Everyone and their mother has already guessed it, but the more I hear and see about this, the more I dread that it's basically just going to be a bog standard "CGI cartoony characters in real-life alongside real actors where the cartoons have their own subplot and try to save the day with the help of the real people but the real people take precedent for the misfortunate parents in the audience with a sappy love story" setup. If not that, then a young kid (or kids) getting wrapped up in protecting Sonic from the adults like some E.T. knockoff.
Here's the plot: All is well in small town America - Green Hill. But one day, a shady chemical plant opens just outside of town. Mr. Cop starts investigating and meets Sonic, who is apparently a lonely loser or whatever. Sonic says his weird animal friends are disappearing and he loves the environment so they should blow the Chemical Plant up and kill the guy behind it all, Eggman. Mr. Cop and Sonic team up for lots of cringy shenanigans and defeat Eggman, forcing the Chemical Plant to close down. The weird ass Green Hill town declares Sonic a hero, Sonic winks at the camera, and Eggman's return is hinted at. Credits roll. Sonic is now the #1 most popular thing in the world.
