Since I don't think this will get any attention unless it has its own topic..

If anyone remembers, hidden-palace was collecting funds for a TJ&E2 proto that apparently was "different from released version" a few years back. The goal was met, but DreamTR then found out he apparently sold it off previously. Luckily, he kept me in mind as he recently found the cartridge again, which had just been lost among his piles of protos this whole time.

Unfortunately it's not an early prototype of the "original" TJ&E2 that was supposed to be more like the first game, but it is an earlier version of the released one. The header shows a date of August 91 and looks to be taken from the first game, so I have no idea how early it is. I would assume 4 months and up.

    Codes
ffBA87:0000 - Use this to automatically have all earthlings. There's one level towards the end that's impossible to beat due to one of the earthlings being stuck underground or somewhere inaccessible, so you need this to go forward.
ff8003:000x - replace x with hex numbers up to D to access the different levels.

    Differences include

-The titlescreen has no press start and automatically goes to a text screen asking you to press buttons to choose your player.
    -No intro
-Level order and layouts are different, including different art sets being used. Not new graphics, but rather I.e a level in the final that had a space background might instead be a snow level here.
-The Funkapotamus is instead the Funkapuss
    -Random glitches
-Secret paths haven't been implemented yet, possibly the idea of collecting Lamont's items isn't here.
-Missing and different sound effects, including a couple different voices.
-One of the songs in the game has a different mix. I forget what the title is.

Fun fact, this apparently came from Gamefan magazines archives.

Looks like there's no proper ending, it ends at an early version of the "Bottomless Pit" level from the final. Not sure if this area is in the final or not.

This is all you get for beating it.

    Funkapuss being mentioned.

Need to take some comparison pics eventually.

Nice, even if it wasn't the one you were hoping for.

Ah! Cool to know it wasn't lost forever!

  5. Haha, I remember when I played T&E:POF I felt the Good Ending felt much like a "90's-style epic finale" of sorts.

The simple "Congratulations" would've pissed me off if I went through the same stuff and just got that. :P

I'd like to think there may be more past that, but finding a cheat to skip levels is proving to be a bitch :p

Still gotta take more comparison shots, just being kept busy by essays to do anything at the moment. I'm holding off immediate release as I don't know what I'll do with it yet. I can't see getting the $200 originally being asked for on hidden palace, but maybe something a bit lower, like $70 or so, just so I can actually have something back in my Paypal so I can start earning more money to buy more protos =P I'm also wanting to start up a personal little site, if not only because I told some former game devs I was planning to, and have lots of interesting stuff to post. Just, you know, as far as actual releases go... this is all I've got for now. Kinda hard making too complete of a site with only one release.

  7. I suppose you could ask drx for some releases, maybe?

I land something every once in a blue moon, but I basically don't have an outlet that thematically fits as I've basically dedicated myself to Satellablog.

I actually asked about one thing he had I was hoping he'd rip for me, but he rarely is ever on irc, which is the only way I contact him, so I don't really ever get to move things forward. I probably should try emailing him.

BTW I'm already at $52 in donations. Thanks people :) I'll see if I can reach $70, but may put it out tomorrow.
I suppose saying that, no one will want to bother contributing any further now :v:

Well, $50 is enough for me, so I put up a download link.

It'd be nice if someone could figure out a code to skip around levels. Really curious if there's anything more past that congrats screen.

Found a level code now and added it to the main post :) The game has ten regularly accessible levels and then three other incomplete levels. They're impossible to navigate without some sort of walk through walls code or something, though. And I'm tired of looking for codes :x

Because shoemanbundy requested it, 1F812:70xx changes the stage theme to the given xx ($00..$FF; not sure if there are more songs beyond that point (or if there can be)). The code takes effect at least when you go into a stage; not sure about moving around. There are some other diferences in the first stage as well (trees give out mainly tires and garbage cans, different enemy order (that cow ghost thing is in the first stage near the door), the checkpoint flags do not change color or play a sound and the one on the first stage is to the right of the door, the parking meter thing near the door does not appear to do anything, a second balloon does not appear when you grab that one balloon at the cliff at the end of the stage, etc.

Hey, the kid shouts "Fast ball!". Cool!

Thanks for this release. I'm seeing there's many subtle differences here waiting to be spotted.

EDIT: Also, the fairy says "Have some of this", heh.

I tried finding any unused tracks. So far there's nothing totally unused, but there are more alternate versions. 1F812:7014 and 15 will play a different mix of the ending theme "After the Funk". Unlike the final this one has much more going on in it. Who knows why they decided to cut it all out and make it a repetitive loop in the final. Though it's still good either way :p 1F812:7016 plays a faster version of "Funk Funk Funk E."

  15. I have a curious picture of Toejam & Earl 2 of a brazilian magazine (Ação Games n° 038 - July 1993).

    The HUD is different:

Thanks for sharing! I've actually seen that pic before. If this proto wasn't going to be the original sequel based off of the first game, I was hoping it would at least be the proto with that HUD. Though something tells me besides the HUD it might not be too different from what we've got here already. My guess is the left side of the HUD there was meant to show how many earthlings you've caught, though the right one I can't even guess.

Is there somewhere where someone can get scans from this Ação Games, btw?

  17. I have all issues of the Ação Games magazine of 1993. It is the only image that appears in the magazine ...

FYI it seems the ff8003:000x code is just loading different layouts, its not loading the object layouts...
