So when I bought my laptop, it was running Windows 8. I hated that operating system's interface, but my computer always ran super fast. Then Microsoft made my computer upgrade to Windows 10 without my permission. Ever since then, the computer's speed has been incredibly inconsistent. In Task Manager, it's not uncommon for Memory to be above 80% and Disk to be 100%. It's completely random when my computer decides to act improperly. I can turn it on and it could run slow or super fast. Or it will run fast, then later act insanely slow. I looked up way to fix this issue, but everything I've tried failed. How can I get my computer to run consistently fast again like it did when I was using Windows 8?

    ...I miss Windows 7. ._.

Have you tried a clean install of Windows 10? Assuming you know how to find drivers for your laptop from the manufacturer's site.

These random speed issues have also been happening to my 3-year old laptop for some time now, but with both 8 (which came preinstalled) and 10. Sometimes takes forever to open any program, sometimes runs great (usually after leaving it on for some time).

Sorry I can't help fixing it but hey, you're not alone. =\

I'd like to avoid a clean install. It takes forever setting everything up again after clean installs. :/

It's just weird a laptop I spent over $1,300 on is having these issues after upgrading the OS.

Upgrades don't always go cleanly for everyone, and on Ubuntu, OS upgrades can be even more broken. :specialed: How much space do all your games and user folders take up? If you have to perform a clean install as a last resort, it doesn't hurt to be prepared with backups of your files, drivers, and programs.

Also, how long has it been since the upgrade? Windows 10 keeps a backup of Windows 8.1 for about a month before deleting it, in case you need to do a rollback. I know people who have downgraded back to 8.1 because of how bad Windows 10 ran on their PCs.

Have you checked your background processes during those slowdowns? Windows 10 could be doing background maintenance or updates, which hogs a lot of the HDD's time away from your programs; might even be superfetch being fickle. It couldn't hurt to go through Task Scheduler and see what services are triggered based on the time of day, how long your PC has been idle, etc.

Actually, I believe the reversion time has been dropped to a week, now...

My computer constantly has horrible memory issues where it now regularly crashes from being low on memory while doing relatively few tasks. This never happened to my previous computer (which was WAY less powerful) and these type of issues never happened when I used Windows 8 on this laptop.

I'm so frustrated at these computer issues and I'm clueless why this keeps happening to me. I do notice this seems to happen a lot when I'm doing stuff with Google Chrome, but I never had memory issues that might be related to Google Chrome until recently. I'm so confused how to fix this problem. My memory usage is often WAY too high. This computer is supposed to be an expensive gaming laptop/heavy use laptop, yet it seems incapable of the latter out of nowhere.

While space is an issue because my external hard-drive has been missing ever since I moved in June, my computer doesn't have enough files and folders to justify this problem.

I think I upgraded last winter.

I check task manager all the time, regularly shut down programs in hopes memory usage would become more reasonable, and it keeps being absurdly high.

Task Scheduler might be your friend there. Background processes on Windows don't start up on their own; something triggers them, and you can find those triggers on the Task Scheduler. I've used it to disable all kinds of processes that were detrimental to performance on a relative's laptop, and on my own copy of Windows 8.1 on my desktop. (It was an unstable potato head with HDD hogging for a while.)

Another thing you could look at is the Event Viewer. Some of those processes could be crashing or logging errors that might be saved for later reference in Event Viewer.

As well, do you have any control over when Windows 10 grabs updates in the background? That could take away from HDD time too.

Have you tried running a registry cleanup from CCleaner? It sure helped me a few days ago, after my laptop got to a point where it just wouldn't run certain programs (now they run without problems again).

A friend of mine recommend me Process Lasso like a replace for Task Manager.

After testing it for a couple of weeks i can say is really good maintaining stability on low-end computers. The only complain is that after a days it popups a windows on startup (like winrar), but you can press Continue and it continue working without problem.
