Yeah 1976 is too late - Pong Doubles seem to be getting cited as the first 4-player arcade game, although I wouldn't rule out earlier examples.

Though given that it's using Yagi Double as a font, you can almost pretend it's a Sega invention :v:

We've really started to build up quite the impressive list of tasks that nobody wants to do:

    https://segaretro.org/Sega_Retro:Todo/Publications

    (bottom of the page)

I thought now was as good a time as any to start making a note of shopping catalogues. The sort you'd highlight things in at Christmas. I see videos on YouTube every now and then - some people stockpile these things:

While it's perhaps unreasonable to suggest we should host 10 years' worth of Argos catalogues in full, it would be handy to have copies of any Sega-related (or just general video game-related) pages for referencing. Most of these places were selling games for less than their RRPs, but it helps us understand release dates and, as the above example shows, is a great place for finding prototype cover art and the occasional unreleased game.

They sure made a lot of renders of Sonic jumping into the sky.

The other reason for doing this is because Sega Retro documents everything related to Sega and we've been saying this for 8 years and we were documenting metal screws at one point so of course we care :specialed:

Incidentally the rest of that publications page - well beyond my comprehension these days.

Not quite sure what's worse, the fact that I did this, or that people went out of their way to watermark scans of Argos catalogues.

Not exactly catalogues... but this press release announces the third price drop on Sega consoles in Portugal... they were initially sold in single packs with the Mega Drive launched at a price of 49.990$00 ''Escudos''... then Ecofilmes released a number of diferent packs... these for the Mega Drive (Basic initially 33.500$00 and later 28.900$00, Standard 39.900$00 and later 33.900$00, Mega Pack 47.900$00 and later 39.900$00... ), these for the Master System (Basic 18.900$00 and later 14.900$00, Sonic Pack 24.700$00 later 23.500$00, Master Pack 29.900$00 and later 26.500$00), and these two for the Game Gear later expanded to three packs (Basic 39.900$00 and later 23.900$00, Game Gear + Sonic + AC adaptor 41.500$00 and later 27.900$00... they added a third pack which was probably just the console without games for a price of 18.900$00)... this magazine is probably from 1993 because we can see the logo of the Portuguese television network ''SIC – Sociedade Independente de Comunicação'' in the cover, which was launched only on 6 October 1992...

    Welp, this.
If someone could help me translate this a bit better, it'd be appreciated--I feel like I'm missing some of the nuance that's trying to be described here:

The middle two sentences don't make a ton of sense to me (something about the battleship having three turrets and the attack power being high, but also easy to hit the bullets?) so help would be appreciated.

    Evening,

A Mega Drive version of this delightful thing is pencilled in for Autumn 1993. I can verify that the SNES version exists, but there are no traces of the Mega Drive version online as far as I can see.

    Was this ever a thing?

Incidentally our port of Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing isn't offering us any clues, because the ROMs don't mention it and we don't have manual scans. Mega Drive versions of the Footpedal totally existed.

Somebody must have bought an issue of Sega Pro CD back in the day.

Is it exactly the same as a normal issue of Sega Pro, but with an extra cover? Or a different cover? I'm assuming Rlan's right on this but it's important if it turns out we need to separate magazine scans.

Sega Freaks is a set of cards I suggested someone should hunt down. Nobody did.

Dude I have literally have dozens of Sega Freaks packets I haven't opened up.

It's one of those things that'll get processed as it gets processed. :X

    - Cheat codes

    - Easter eggs

    - Unused content

I want to start making sub-pages for these things on Sega Retro. With screenshots where applicable to prove these things actually work and/or are there.

On Sonic Retro we have "cheat codes" and "game secrets", which I'm not sure are the best of terms. I'm conscious that not all cheats are codes, and not all codes are cheats, and that "secrets" could apply to all three categories above.

This isn't full fat GameFAQs so there's not going to be anything about how to play the game normally or hints about what happens when you do (e.g. "finish x to unlock y").

So uh... what's the best name I can give these things, and should I be grouping two or more of these together?

Maybe just have one "hidden content" page per game. Most games only have 1 or 2 cheat codes and easter eggs, so it doesn't warrant separate pages.

    Space Harrier II/Hidden content

    bonk

    Fun fact: "A + B + C + Start" doesn't bode well when your keyboard doesn't support N-key rollover.

I'm interested to know roughly how many cheats listed on GameFAQs actually work. I have a theory that a lot was copied from old gaming magazines in the 90s, and that writers back then weren't checking before going to print.

Not sure if this is the area to post this, but speaking of hidden content...

I don't think anyone's documented the Silhouette Mirage trial disc that anyone familiar with the game has probably seen on eBay before.

I found a download and was somewhat surprised to learn that the entire game is on the disc! Certainly not unheard of, but not common to find either. Even more interesting is all files on it are dated 7/16/97, while the final's files are dated 7/30/97. Possibly not much room for any huge differences between that time, but who knows.

Edit: They left in the debug mode! But sadly it appears trying to access anywhere else besides stage 2-1 just takes you back to the titlescreen.

Anyone think they can figure out how to get into other levels?

Take a screenshot of the title screen with no filters for Sega Retro if you would, please.

    This is an excellent exercise:

    Virtua Fighter/Hidden content

GameFAQs has a couple of cheats for the arcade version of Virtua Fighter. I can't get them to work.

This means, unless there's an alternative code or I'm just doing it wrong, Dural is not playable in the original Virtua Fighter without hacking. Which means playing as her might have been a Saturn-exclusive thing for a while.

Now given that Virtua Fighter was the sole reason the Japanese were even investing in Saturns back in late 1994, that means the promise of Dural might have been a factor in early Saturn sales. So the console relied in part on a metal woman with a fish for a brain.

Also it means I can build the David Perry Collection™
