I'm not sure how AGES feel about accepting fan contributions. If they had, they'd likely have a much more refined spin dash programmed that's for sure.

Concerning R, I guess it depends on choice of conversion. They might just use a Saturn emulation if they have advanced enough, though the PC port is likely the most accessible, and hopefully it would be smoother to convert onto newer systems than the Gamecube and PS2. We'll have to see how any of their alleged planned Saturn titles are released first.

    Working on my art!
Oh for sure, but one can dream.

And I think the Gamecube/PS2 versions were based on the 2004 PC port. I'd imagine the 2004 PC port would make the most sense to bring over, especially because the PC versions have options for things like weather and time of day and increased draw distance and things like that.

We'll have to see what they do with any Saturn games planned first (I'm placing heavy bets on Nights into Dreams being the first if any).

Concerning Arcade games though, I wonder if Sonic the Fighters would be considered. It already had a pretty solid port on both Gems and the Xbox 360.

Any Saturn/Titan games would probably use Ages 2500 versions first.

Truthfully I'd kinda prefer quality over quantity anyway. Even the Mega Drive titles would hold up if they were refined enough and had enough extras to make them stand out from the other billion bog standard emulations.

I'm actually kinda hoping they'll go back to ones like Sonic 1 and give them the odd patch or DLC.

You're right that for this reason, it'll mostly be the Genesis. However, there is a justification for Saturn stuff if Sega wants to go about this in a different way. The Genesis/Mega Drive bombed horribly in Japan, and the Saturn is by far their best selling console in Japan. Now, I think Sega knows they just don't have a huge Japanese base in 2018 that wants this kind of stuff, so I don't think they're going to cater to them. At the end of the day, I think Sega knows most people that care about this kind of stuff are westerners.

I'm just kind of bored from the usual Genesis ports, though Thunder Force IV got me a bit excited because it's something you don't see a lot of. I love the Genesis, but the stuff that would get me personally excited are weird oddities like Advanced Busterhawk Gleylancer, Alisia Dragoon, Star Cruiser, etc. (Games that have no chance in hell). The millionth port of Sonic is pretty ho-hum.

I think even the Megadrive rereleases would have more validity if they added enough polish and extras to them to make them stand out individually against a quick look package like the current SEGA Megadrive Classics.

On paper Sonic 1 could have worked since adding extra abilities and modes nearly doubles it's replay value and adds a bit of freshness to a old game. However it's a bit too half baked, the abilities are a tad glitchy, Ring Keep Mode is more a glorified setting option, and Time Attack for ONE LEVEL isn't really developed enough to waste more than a couple of minutes.

How I wish they were to do that, and with ALL Ages 2500 games, not only the ones they already made available in the west.
Of course, so far, all these talks seem to be about the releases in Japan only.

Concerning taking from unauthorised hacks, I've wondered, could they get away with a release of Sonic 3D Blast that included Jon Burton's 'Director's Cut'?

I wonder how Puyo Puyo would translate too since it's on the potential list. Would they English translate, give us a Mean Bean Machine version, just give us the Japanese version, or not bother with a western release?

I mean if we're calling for taking hacks, I would literally sell my soul to Satan to have Shining Force III fully translated on a collection somewhere.

    My review:

    They're charging €7 for Sonic 1, HAHAHAHAHAHA.

Seriously, you can get an enhanced remake for €2,22 and a 3D version for €4,50. What were they thinking?

Well for the Switch there's the choice of playing it on the big screen. (It's a shame the emulation makes widescreen out of the question otherwise that would be pretty solid reasoning).

I'd consider the pricing fine against the 3D version (which had less extras) but glaring against the remake, which admittedly added a fair bit more to reason an individual purchase.

I'd say it's no worse than charging even more for the bare ROM in Wii Shopping Channel not long ago.

they also have the Mega play version of sonic 1 included too. I'm actualy surprised that there's no coverage of that version of Sonic one anywhere on the site, nor on Sega Retro. playing that version I was surprised to learn that Marble and Labyrinth zones are missing.

I remember playing it once in an old SEGA centre in Birmingham I think, I remember being more surprised by the fast music due to not knowing about the PAL difference when I was a kid.

I'd say that if the AGES version had a bug fixed Spin/Drop Dash and a less esoteric Time Attack, this would have been a reasonable package for the price.

I'm hoping Sonic 2 offers a bit more since 2 Player seems to be gone and Mega Play mode doesn't have as many differences to draw to (can they at least add fly ability for Tails in this one?).

I ponied up the 7 bucks just out of curiosity. Man are they milking this....totally not worth 7 bucks. What exactly are the differences between some of these versions?

It does say on the Jp SEGA Ages site "1 to 2 people". So maybe two player mode will be included? At the very least the second player should be able to control Tails in single player with a second joy-con, and two player vs mode offline should be included as it's part of the original game. Probably unrealistic to expect online two-player vs.

What are the differences in the Mega Play version of Sonic 2? Are there any stages not included, like with Sonic 1 Mega Play?

Giving Tails the ability to fly (like in the mobile remasters) would add to the replay value. So I hope they do (I assume you couldn't fly with Tails in the 3DS release).

The SEGA Ages version is also getting the following modes:

The time-attack mode better be more than just Emerald Hill act1....

If you're talking about the settings versions, International version is standard Sonic 1, Japan is the polished one with scrolling backgrounds and spike bug fixed, Mega Play is the arcade version with time limits and less levels and a high score screen where you can write you initials (rather surprised that gimmick isn't added more often really, not even many fan hacks do it).

Well the teaser of the title screen lacked a 2 Player VS option, which is concerning.
    http://info.sonicretro.org/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_2_(arcade_game)

All stages but special stage are available, meaning no Super Sonic but for automatic good ending, curiously no form of time limit exists (not even the original 10 minute one) and there is no high score table like the first Mega Play game.

No, it seemed a glaring omission since you'd think that'd be one of the things they'd fix up first. Plus Sonic having Drop Dash in this version would give Tails a heavy disadvantage.

Granted their knowledge of implementing the Spin Dash is buggy so I could see them struggling to make Tails' flying work.

Time Attack is at least mentioned, though it's looking worryingly like that is the case.

I have to say that Ring Keep and Supersonic modes feel more like setting options than proper separate modes on their own. They want an extra mode, they should try replicating Jam's Easy modes with actual layout changes.

Is the horizontal resolution borked in the Mega Play layer?

Just saw a video where the HUD's supposedly plain white text ("credits"/etc) had some awful thick grey pixels surrounding it, which doesn't happen in MAME for example.
