Those holiday scene images were also used on some very rare Japanese collectible cards. If I recall correctly, there was someone here who had once posted I believe Spanish or Portuguese collectible cards with those same exact illustrations on them. I could have sworn they were posted in this very thread but I cannot seem to find them now when I backtracked. I know there was an even older art thread prior to this one so maybe they were posted in there? Anyways, here's some pictures of those same illustrations found on the rare Japanese collectible cards.

That art was used for an old Japanese Sonic jigsaw puzzle. I bet that a lot of these illustrations were also used for the Harmony magazines as well. This is the kind of art that I wish we can find in really good quality. It literally makes me feel sad and also frustrated beyond belief that it's all basically lost art. This is the kind of art that should have been in the Sonic art book. That book was a disappointment. Even though it did provide us with some new concept art it just wasn't enough. Too many pages were wasted on giant blown up sprites of rings and such. There was no Screensaver / Harmony art, no concept art at all for Sonic 3 and Knuckles, no artwork from magazines and not enough concept art. Hell, I'd buy an entire book of just "The Art of Sonic 1" or "The Art of Sonic 2" ect. They wasted too many pages on already well known art, sprites, or other nonsense. Another thing that bothered me too was that the new art they did show would sometimes be split between the spine basically ruining it and making it harder to view. :/ Sorry, I got a little off topic there.

That was me lol. XD Thank you so much for sharing that! :) It really means a lot to me. That's literally the best quality image of that illustration that we have available now. I just really wish that we could have a high res scan though. What I don't understand is why this illustration wasn't included in Sonic the Screensaver as well as a couple of other "lost" Japanese puzzle artworks and calendar artworks. I wish they were all included. Who knows how many other lost Screensaver style artwork is out there just waiting for us to find.

Oh, wow. Really? Do you know if she'd be willing to scan or take some photos of them? If so that would be greatly appreciated. :)

One of the rarest and most sought after "lost" art for me is this.

This cropped version came from a French magazine I believe but it is unfortunately very badly sun faded. I wish more than anything that we can find this magazine in better quality and get a higher quality scan of it someday. This illustration was also used as a Japanese postcard and was also featured in Beep! Megadrive and Megadrive FAN as background art for articles discussing Sonic CD. I've also seen it as a small thumbnail image in a Spanish magazine and as background art for a Japanese pamphlet discussing Sonic CD. This is my holy grail of "lost" artwork though because it's such a beautiful and well detailed illustration and I just absolutely love it. It's such a shame and it saddens me that it's basically lost art. I was really hoping to see this illustration in the Sonic art book.

Here's the image as seen in some Japanese magazines and pamphlets.

And here it is in a Spanish magazine.

Here's some pictures of Japanese Sonic calendars that have the Screensaver art style.

The one highlighted in red is lost art that wasn't included in Sonic the Screensaver.

Here's some pictures of Japanese Sonic puzzles.

Believe it or not but this picture of Sonic standing at the Jukebox is slightly different than the one featured in Sonic the Screensaver. He's posed slightly differently and the Jukebox looks completely different.

Here's an image from a Sonic plush paper tag. It's really cute and very 90s looking and it's also in the Screensaver art style.

Here's another image of the Japanese Sonic Ski Lodge magazines.

  2. That's actually portuguese, not spanish, so the magazine is probably brazilian.

Off topic, but all true. Anyway, you wouldn't happen to have more information about the jigsaw puzzle would you?

Do you know the name of this card set? The left page of the binder with the Sega Harmoney/Sonic Screensaver art looks to be the "SEGA FREAKS" set, but the page with the Sonic 1/holiday art looks to be from a different set entirely.

Every Bollycao (an hot dog bun, with chocolate filling, similar to ''nutella'') sega sticker (Spain, Portugal) has a detachable sticker with Sonic...there were two versions ... those with the letters of the alphabet and some just with Sonic in them... kids used to detach those with letters, to "embellish" their school books, back then ... so they are rare, because most of them are gone due to this...

Edit: Bollycao buns were sold, in single or in packs of three buns, this poster came included in one of those "three" packs ( advertising the then new Bollycao promotional campaign, let me say... it was a hit... "Panrico" the, Spanish manufacturing company must have made millions with this, back then)...

The magazine page isn't sun faded, it was actually printed that way. I know, I had that issue of Mega Force when it was released and I scanned the picture years ago.

You can find the whole issue scanned by someone else here.

Slightly off topic, but was there ever a mention anywhere why on earth Sonic used to be referred to as Sega Sonic/SegaSonic and when that stopped?

Not as crazy hard to find as the ones you're all talking about, but I recently extracted Sonic Blast artwork for The Video Game Art Archive via scanning everything at 600dpi and extracting it. I've now also uploaded it all to Sonic Retro.

For the record, those Bollycao stickers are another set of things that need scanning for Sega Retro:

A little awkward because the bottom sections (with the Sonic letters) were meant to be separated, but I'm sure you'll cope.

An unusual case, but Jon Burton found higher quality renders of most of the Sonic R courses.

A picture of some intact Bollycao stickers (in their original form)...

Edit: Just one more detail... there were 2 sets of Bollycao Sega stickers, the first set composed by 60 Stickers and the second set composed of 50 more stickers... 110 in total... the campaign started in 1992... the Sonic detachables with the letters of the alphabet are just included in the second set ... the stickers of the first set didn't have any detachable Sonic sticker ... that's the difference between the two sets...

Oh yeah I forgot to raise this - someone needs to chase up the actual images (as opposed to videos of images).

These were used in a few magazines at the time (and maybe even a manual or two).

I wish I had a way of unsee things. Sonic looks withered and his mouth looks like it's from a turtle, too. Thank god it's rare.

I can't read Chinese, but the Chrome dictionary addon I have is able to recognize hanzi, so I ran that through it. It seems to read "complete preservation special issue 4." Make of that what you will.

Clube Sega flyers (Portugal) ... they were sent to members by mail ... with a letter "written by Sonic" (it was what they wanted us to believe :)/>/> ) ... and this magazine ... entirely free...

Edit: "Páscoa 93 = Easter 93" (hence the ''bunny'' Sonic)

I dunno whether or not these would be considered rare, but I've always thought the cover art on the Japanese Sonic X DVDs was pretty sweet:

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    (these are my favorites)

Only problem is that these pics here are about the highest res they're available in. This may not be so bad; they look good enough on their own, but it's not enough for someone like me. I'd kill for hi-res scans of all 13 volumes, but as these DVDs have been out of print for years now, that's a very thin possibility. I guess the fact that there's no hi-res scans of them around is what classifies them as "rare"? 15th anniversary deluxe DVD box set pretty please

Only good equivalent right now is scans of French DVDs up on Cinema Passion (look up "Sonic" there) which do have some of this art, but not all of it. I hate that dub DVDs opted for random stock artwork instead.
