So, I turned my laptop on today, and suddenly, 4 out of 5 USBs have failed, sound has failed, fingerprint has failed, and the built-in webcam and microphone has failed. Going into Device manager, I can find most of my USB's listed, but it says:

    • Unknown USB Device (Port Reset Failed)

Right clicking on it, and the device says: Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A USB port reset request failed.

Others like my Realtek sound device, fingerprint, etc, do not even appear. I have tried to uninstall drivers/devices, and reinstall the drivers/devices. This makes no difference.

Next, was a system restore, and there was a system restore point created 3 days ago. Restoring it to that did nothing.

Now, one USB port works, so I plug in my headset (HyperX cloud 2), which has it's own sound card, but that doesn't show up either, nor does the mic work, so something is up with this "working" port.

It's weird, it all worked fine yesterday, and I haven't installed anything new. What could possibly cause this? Hoping it's not a hardware issue, but it's weird that all of these suddenly fail, yet they're not exactly related to each other.

I'm running on Windows 10 if it helps. Any answers or suggestions would be appreciated. So far, Google is only giving me the obvious "restart PC/reinstall drivers and devices/etc"

    Cheers

EDIT: Found the HD Audio controller, it has a different message:

EDIT2: Fixed it. Uninstalling the drivers, then using a program called "registry recycle" (which those programs I am skeptical of using), then restarting the laptop seemed to have fixed it all. I'll leave this topic in the technical forum just in case anyone else ever runs into this problem.

I'd argue the cause of the problem was most likely Windows 10. It auto-installs from Windows Update.... including drivers.

I did think Windows Update was possibly to do with it, but checking the update history, only a defender definition was installed on that day:

As a quick sanity check to make sure it's not a hardware fault, can you boot to a Linux LiveCD/LiveUSB and test those USB ports? (Use the 'dmesg' command to see if any USB errors occur.)

Stupid question, do I just download LiveUSB to a USB and then restart the laptop with the USB in the port? Only because the link I just provided doesn't look right (never used Linux in my life). I don't have a CD drive btw.

  6. Yes, that is correct. Install whatever distro you want and just boot to the USB.

Okay, finally got round to it. I installed it on the USB and restarted my laptop. The laptop just booted Windows 10 as per usual, but the USB was flashing like mad while on the BIOS screen.

My USB drives and fingerprint and webcam/mic have been fine for the past few days anyway.
