When it comes to inconsistencies like these I tend to just sit back and watch people speculate. Nice to know people want some continuity in the franchise, but it's also a shame that they'll never find it.

Sonic's continuity was destined to fail the minute SEGA decided to split the series for Western/Eastern audiences. It's an utter mess. At this point in time, I generally concern myself less over the unexplained properties of the Chaos Emeralds in the classic games and am having loads more fun trying to figure out how the moon was repaired as if nothing had happened.

The moon is big enough that it will return to a spherical shape on its own. That, or it's because the into to StH was made by blur who hadn't worked on any of the previous games and thus didn't know it had happened.

You do realize how far those pieces flew, right? And even if they didn't, it would take a loooooooooooong time for that to happen, and if that was the case, it sure as sunshine wouldn't look the same.

Going back to Knuckles' reason for stealing the Chaos Emeralds if they weren't his...because "NOW SONIC CAN CHANGE INTO SUPER SONIC".

If you know your foe has a tactical advantage like the ability to become neigh invulnerable, you probably want to relieve them of it as soon as possible if you still plan on fighting them. Hence, Knuckles sucker punches him in the opening and gets the magics rocks away from Sonic before he even registers Knuckles as a threat.

Hence my 'Video Recorder Theory' as I'll call it, as it explains how the moon returns to it's normal appearance in such a short span, while using something that's within a character's control, aka Chaos Control, while preventing counter arguments such as "Why doesn't it look any different then before, since destroying and reforming would cause some visible differences."

And speaking of Sonic 3's Opening Cutscene, how the hell does Knuckles harm an Invincible being? I've already go a theory based on the Master Emerald, but what do you guys think?

The ME power thing is almost assumed fanon by now, if you're aiming for consistency with the current games and its power to stop the Chaos Emeralds. Otherwise, you could write it off as a wide variety of things, including Super Sonic not being able to protect himself from ambushes.

Maybe because it was a sneak attack? That's my best guess on that matter.

Also worth noting that in Sonic 3's final boss, Eggman was able to knock you out of your super form when he grabbed you and threw you to the ground.

Then there's the opening to Unleashed...

...and being crushed, bottomless pits, drowning, exceeding the 10 minute limit...

...or maybe he just ran out of 50 rings at that very moment. v.png

The counter is at 0 rings after that scene after all. v.png

I think it was just because Super Sonic isn't invincible, as that happened in the s3 final boss too.

Guys...Knuckles PUNCHED Sonic out of his Super Form.

PUNCHED.

Knuckles was able to knock the emeralds out of Super Sonic because the startup on a Shorkuken is invulnerable. Knuckles would probably punch the emeralds rather than Sonic under those circumstances.

There's three possibilities that I can come up with:

1 ) Sonic's ring count was just about to hit 0 when Knuckles ambushed Sonic, which is why Sonic dropped the emeralds instead of rings when he was hit.

2 ) Knuckles, being one of the physically strongest characters in the Sonic universe, is just barely strong enough to damage Super Sonic.

3 ) Knuckles is just super special awesome like that. Oh, and it's a cut scene in a game made in 1994.

Or you know that could be a glitch. v.png

Yeah, I hold the ME responsible. Super Sonic's approach to Angel Island is the first time in 4,000 years that the Emeralds (or the Westside Emeralds, if you're a twosetsfag) have been brought within a thousand miles of the Master (and the Master's whole gimmik is to negate their powers), so the ME is particularly well-stocked with the ability to de-power the CEs.
Just approaching Angel Island leaves Super Sonic vulnerable as he flies through the ME's extended field of influence; so one punch from Knux is all it takes.

On top of that, you could conjecture that he was about to hit 0 rings anyway.

*EDIT: Actually, look at my sig. That's pretty much exactly what it describes.

Just to fuel the speculation on the "About to hit 0 Rings," when he gets hit, no rings fly off.

I love over-analyzing 16-bit cutscenes, especially about Sonic. v.png
