This mystery bonus showed up when I placed an Egg Capsule (the thing that holds the little animals in Act 2's) and opened it to end the stage. While it wasn't necessary, I placed it before I fought Silver Sonic. While the 100,300 points were tallied up, I beat Silver Sonic :^D But what's important is this bonus...how do you get it normally?

By the way, I was able to place an Egg Capsule in Death Egg using a Rom hack named Omega Directive. I'll link to it later. I notice that in a normal Sonic 2 game, you can't place an Egg Capsule in Death Egg. Anyway, help on this would be nice :^)

P.S. The numbers have white shadows because I hit Silver Sonic as I was taking the snapshot on Gens, this is normal for any boss.

What I need to do is see if I still have my Sonic 2 manual around. I think this was supposed to be a bonus you received upon defeating all of the enemies at least once and/or getting every ring/item in the level. But I'll admit I don't think I can recall getting a perfect bonus ... except perhaps once long ago when we were really trying for it.

... which doesn't mean it'd be invalid for it to be there. In fact, any object in any level of Sonic 2 may be placed in any zone without a problem save for its graphics will be incorrect. With the exception of when I did a ROM hack to replace one of the gates in the beginning of DEZ with the "Tails" object. This brought a real, live Tails to aid in the DEZ fights... which is cheating insanely since he can't "die". :P

I have the manual for Sonic 2, and the Perfect Bonus isn't mentioned there at all. There wasn't even a hint at it at all...

BTW, that's pretty funny placing Tails in the Death Egg, but who would save Sonic when he falls down from the Death Egg after it explodes and stuff? :^D Where can I find this ROM hack?

Edit: Wait a minute! This is important...the hack I used didn't change Death Egg except for one little thing: the addition of three rings before the room with Silver Sonic. I retried the procedure without getting the rings, and I didn't get the Perfect Bonus! At least we know now that it involves rings...however, I have this feeling that involves more than just collecting every ring...

Whoa, Tails fighting in DEz with Sonic? Can I see this please? The Tails Fans will be very thankful and do you many favors :D.

Yes, all it takes is every ring. I just now tried it and it works. 286 rings in Emerald Hill Zone 1. It doesn't matter about the enemies. Also, you can get hit as many times as you like. As long as there are no rings left in the stage, the bonus is yours. You may have 0 rings and still get it.

Yes, there is a counter (I forget the RAM address) that holds the number of rings in the normal layout (not counting ring monitors). Each time you get a 'real' ring (as opposed to a debug ring), this number is decremented by 1. When you pass the endpost/break the Egg Capsule, if this variable equals 0 then you get the bonus.

Why is that not in the manual? Maybe it's an Easter Egg that just took a LONG time to discover...

Mystery solved, thanks guys! :^) I doubt it was an Easter Egg, I think Sega just forgot to put this in the manual. I wonder if this bonus is also in Sonic 1 and/or Sonic 3?

Ya know, it's just a little hard to discover. And in Death Egg, the counter is probably set between one and three, and when the guy picked up those rings, it triggered the "perfect bonus" since the counter was set to zero. Wait... Death Egg has no normal "Sonic got through Act" (or in this case "Zone"), it's probably set to zero, but can't go below zero. And since there's no normal ending, you never get the bonus (obviously!)!

There is no rings in Death Egg. But with the Hack that gave it 3, I think it put those 3 in the total count automatically.

Hmmm... yes, you're probably right. I thought the number would be internal and not change if the level was hacked to have more rings.

I don't think he would have thought to modify both values if he just added rings, so they are probably the same value. But then again, if there was an egg capsule placed into the stage's debug, who knows.
