Random Hack/Mini Project Thread

Discussion in 'Engineering & Reverse Engineering' started by Malevolence, Jul 4, 2009.

  1. Nice to see that somebody benefited from my source release, I apologise for the rush job on the actual interface of the player :P
On the topic of that hack, It's rather strange how some of the musics actually seem to feel right in the zones, Marble Zone for example.
You should take some time to fix up the sound effects and see what happens.

CAN you fix the sound effects, to begin with?
It should be noted that I like these "sound driver xxxx in Sonic 1" proof of concept ROMs a lot, many of you might know that Wiz managed to put the excellent Cube/Iwadare driver into Sonic 2, but the main issue with these is that there are dozens of smps sound effects which should be ported to the new format -- unless you find a way to get two drivers to coexist without killing the Z80 and/or the 68000, and keep the smps sound effects while the music plays by its own. This isn't trivial if you want to do it right.

This... OMG just rocks! Who knows abit of tinkering to the S1 rom could make this epic!

    The ones I like:

Intro/Invicibility/1up - Sounds like something being used in the S Factor: Sonia and Silver hack

Green Hill Zone - More Awesome, sounds like a new level and well... it's beautiful

Marble Hill Zone - Sounds like a good future, winter happy/cheerful level now

Warning: Excessive listening may result in hearing damage :v:

I refuse to play any sonic hack other than this ever again. You win. Especially because of the sound effects. I mean the spikes burp for crying out loud. This is amazing.

oh and I can't find where track 12 is used anywhere, that's my fave EWJ song. Would have made a great scrap brain song.

I see your Sonic 1 Reversed Frequencies and I raise you Sonic 2 Reversed Frequencies.

I recommend Hill Top, Casino Night, Mystic Cave and the Special Stage (for the intro).

I love these reversed frequency hacks to death. So simple, and so brilliant. Can't wait to see Sonic 3 done.

Oh yeah, in this Sonic 2 one, I noticed the boss music sounds like clown music. Like Sonic 4, hmmm? I wonder what would happen if we reversed the frequency on Sonic 4's boss music? =P

Oh my god, Death Egg Zone sounds fantastic.

Oh yeah, Sonic's hurt/dying noise sounds like something from Ristar. :v:

You beat me to it. :P I made the changes last night in a test hack but I'm a bit busy with school and whatnot so I didn't take the time to make a hack with only these changes in it. I agree with your recommendations; I'll also say that Super Sonic's theme sounds like something bad is going to happen. :P

I think the reason why some tracks sound so different is that sometimes the lead is quieter and the melody is louder due to the frequency change. Unless you've been listening to each channel individually with a VGM player or something like I did, you may ear something you didn't notice from the original track.

    Also, I received this email:
    <!--quoteo(post=0:date=Sep 28 2010, 11:06 PM:name=Derek deLima)--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (Derek deLima @ Sep 28 2010, 11:06 PM)</div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->Sorry, I lurk the forums and can't manage to wait for full member access.

Please, do the reversed frequencies for Sonic 2 and S3&K! I loved how the moods and whatnot completely changed. Plus, my curiosity for the other games is killing me, haha.[/QUOTE]
Well, that's Sonic 2 done. I'll try doing Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles by next week unless I'm beaten to it again. :v:

Oh no don't do sonic 3. People will shit bricks when they hear something similiar by one note to micheal jackson's music =P.

Overall, I like it. The music is quite good and the sound effects are just awesome, (the explosion sound sounds like someone got slapped)

Yeah, this is rather nice. I've gotten the GEMS driver directly into Sonic 1 No-Name, and it coexists with the Sonic 3 Z80 Driver. It's used mostly in teh special stage, and when I get 'round to it, I'll make a quick vid of it.

Made while bored, with the intention of offering to SOTI for S2Dimps, here is Sonic 2 with Sonic 4ish palletes.

I could probably make Lost Labyrinth's better with Tribeam's new pallete editor. But I don't care enough to. Not at the moment, anyway. :v:

Here's the full "Reversed Frequencies" series:

    Sonic 1
    Sonic 2 (by Cinossu)
    Sonic 3
    Sonic & Knuckles

Sonic 3 introduced a new difficulty, as the FM frequency table only contained entries for a single octave, and the values for the higher octaves are computed. I had to edit the code a little bit (start a counter at 38h instead of 0 and subtract instead of add), but to determine what I had to edit, I first needed to disassemble it and make some sense of it.

In Sonic & Knuckles, the driver is compressed, unlike in Sonic 3 where it's uncompressed. I struggled a bit to assemble it correctly (I must have made a mistake in the hex editor, but I couldn't find it, so I exported a .asm file from IDA and edited the driver from the assembly code instead).

EDIT: fixed download link to S&K

  18. I get a 404 for Sonic 3 and a Bad Request for S&K

I could only mirror S3's, S&K's was "File Not Found".
