I must ask you, when did I actually SAY that anything I posted was mine? I've gone over it about 10 times so far, and all it says (in my eyes) that I'm working on something, spent a while testing out engines and than decided on using the Dash engine and finally replacing sprites. Anyway, going away from that, your project looks pretty cool Derf. Any videos of it in action?
Looks close to the XG Special Stage. Still, I've been following your work for a while and I must say I'm inspired from everything you post from the very first screen shots of ExoGenesis (sorry if I got that spelled different) to the original Fang. All in all, love your work and I'm sure the engine test is going to be A-OK!
It's just the fact that you were posting something in the screenshots thread with such little original content bugged me. No need to de-rail any further. Thanks for the compliment Yeah it was pretty similar to the Sonic XG special stage but it's a lot different in game with gimmicks and curves and what not. Thanks for the kind words they really mean a lot
These are some screens from an original project I'm working on called "Sonic Theta". My goal is to have a game with original level art, and original music. Here's some shots and the soundtrack of the first level. (All songs as-of-now are in MIDI, and this version has different-sounding instruments than the final will, but this will give you an idea.) Title Card (Ignore the "Sonic in RR" written under the Robotnik logo. The game's name has changed.) Gameplay shots The first act of this level is mostly under a forest canopy, and this shot was just to give a glimpse of the mountains that make this the Wooded Valley Zone. You get to spend some time up this high in the second act (which is still in the level-drawn-out-on-graph-paper stage) And here's the song(Again, ignore the "Sonic in Robotnik's Rampage" logo. The name has changed.): Tell me what you think! I can't make every change that people suggest, but criticism can only make it better!
(Mockup, ignore the inaccuracy...) I have made a few changes since last time. This is all still meant to be a variation on Sonic, 1 So I'm not sure if I went too far with the foreground tiles. And the checkpoint is a peculiar sight isn't it? I just like the star better. EDIT: @ Lambda: I'll say a couple of things about that, seeing as I just butted in. Firstly I love level art that reminds me of different levels in one, and yours reminds me of Mushroom Hill, Emerald Hill AND Green Hill, which all have quite different styles so well done. There are a couple of things I think can be improved on. The objects kind of clash, I mean, some things have been shaded with almost an outline, like the trees, leaves and flowers, but the actual tiles are less detailed. I cant really go any deeper on that, and the tiles would benefit with a shadow under the grass. ~Ohhh, and those dark green mountains are shaded very weirdly, I suggest you make the shading look less like an airbrush effect if you know what I mean. Well done besides all that
That's for the critique! I appriciate the feedback! :D I'll see what I can do about the mountains, but for the grass shadow and ground texture, that may have to take awhile, since I'm laying the tiles in now, and it would be hard to change them. Maybe after I finish a few more zones, I can come back to it! As for YOUR graphics, they look fantastic! I like how you changed the dithers into horizontal or vertical lines! It makes it looks sharper, and kinda gives it a different look! The only nitpick I have, is that the ground texture looks a bit TOO different from the original. Maybe if you kept the same style of tile, but made them dark and light like the checkerboards in the original, it would look more detailed, but still similar.
That was some rocking footage!I love the versatility of gameplay honestly and it looks gorgeous. The one thing that I found both good and bad was the distortion effect when boosting.
@P3DR0: Looking awesome so far man; I'm getting flashbacks of of TLOZ: Wind Waker looking at that Water.
Needs more variety. Omg that would be so awesome, to have an open world Sonic game where you could run around to all the environments, from Angel Island to Hydrocity to Carnival Night. Whatever, but everywhere would be accounted for and all you'd have to do is run.
As far as variety goes, this is just the terrain model. There will be forests and the whole sandopolis desert. Yes, it will be free roam but think more cave story. My main goal is to make it so that there are 0 level transitions. I'm also looking to make hubs in the major areas. Take hydrocity for example. I've actually turned it into a full city with buildings and public transportation. The city will have shops and things. Other places like Sandopolis will have major cities. There will be ruins [which contain all of the old stages from Sonic 3] which fit logically into the civilizations that have set up alongside them. So far my main 4 hubs are Hydrocity, Marble Garden, Sandopolis and the launch base area. There will also be an island wide transport tunnel ala Endless Mines. By the end of the game you'll be able to either use the mines train transit, fly to levels on the map via the tornado[realtime. The sequences will be like sky chase.] or if you have obtained the chaos emeralds, you can fly wherever you want on your own. If you run out of rings, you'll obviously fall back down to the island and land wherever you were flying over. Edit: By cave story, I meant 2D side scrolling. You'll get to go through the whole island but by side scrolling. Different paths lead to different areas. For example, while I built it, I realized that you only get to Marble garden from a fluke. That geyser shot you up there. Logically, hydrocity is further down in height. I'll have 2 paths from Angel Island Zone. 1, leading down towards the waterfall area that leads to hydrocity. The second is through mountain side caves which climb to the marble garden area. I'll draw out a map soon.
Tried my best to match it up with the sprite from Sonic 3. Geographically, its pretty close, I think.
I had always considered Hydrocity to be inside the island, in the hanging lower bit, perhaps just beneath the jungle are in Angel Island Zone, and that the bridge Sonic and Tails fell off went over a hole that the water in Angel Island drained into leading to Hydrocity.
Yes, I've made a little change due to it being part of a fangame. That blue hydrocity area was going to be an actual city but I've changed the idea to go along with Hydrocity's original design. I was going to change the geography of that city to an underwater location beneath azure lake. Similar to an atlantis. It wont be a city of water dwellers though. It'll be a sustained atmosphere beneath water level. I'm still going to keep the original hydrocity zone as ruins [Since it shifted around and geysers erupted, effectively changing it in Sonic 3]. The ruins will lead from the waterfall in AIZ to the hydroelectric plant in an adjacent waterfall between AIZ and MGZ. Azure Lake would logically be somewhere near Marble garden too [Because I cant logically think of somewhere to put it.] so I'll be connecting AIZ to Hydrocity via the old way and Hydrocity to MGZ via the city and Azure lake. There will also be a direct route through the mountainside caves from AIZ to MGZ.
Whare's Chrome Gadget gonna be? I'm assumong Balloon Park and Desert Palice are gonna be incorperated into Carnival Night and Sandopolis. Also, does that mean you're leaving out Flying Battery?I understand that if this is taking place after Sonic 3 & K it isn't flying anymore, but you could put it somewhere on the map, like, crashed on the ground. There's also Sky Sanctuary. If you don't wanna include Hidden Palace and it's teleporter, you could have people climb out of the top of the Lava Reef Volcano, and have Sky Sanctuary start there. Just a few ideas.
Sky sanctuary will be there. Hidden palace too. As far as Flying battery, since it was obviously destroyed, the ruins will be somewhere on the map but there will be a new sky scene with the egg fleet. It'll sort of be like Sonic heroes' egg fleet but obviously 2D side scrolling. It'll be like flying battery but with lots of them put into one level. I might plop it down somewhere past mushroom hill in a large field. As far as chrome gadget goes, where would it logically fit? It definitely has a city vibe to it. Balloon park will be part of the carnival's big layout. There will be the amusement park[balloon park] , the rollercoaster area, the toy factory, the candy factory and the funhouse. I wont call it carnival night because you'll be able to visit it during the day and night. Desert palace will be where the desert dwellers live. It'll be one of the world's hubs. Out from there you will have to cross the sand ocean to get to the sandopolis pyramid.
