Sega Video Magazine + Other Sega Preview Videos.

Discussion in 'General Sega Discussion' started by Kiddo Cabbusses, Mar 13, 2012.

  1. Phugolz asked me to check for any obscure-seeming or possible-prototype Sonic videos on NicoNicoDouga, so I ran some searches.

    Still am running those searches, but right now I'm looking at a series of videos that caught my eye; "Sega Video Magazine". There's also a few other things I grabbed including "Sega Video News" and a Sonic 1 Preview tape.

    A playlist with said videos is here;
    http://www.nicovideo.jp/mylist/16165707

    I'm ripping these off NicoNicoDouga as we speak and mirror them here. Anyone else wanna help?

    Go Kiddo. Rip that $%1+

  3. A few notes on the things that have been spotted in some of the videos so far;

    1) The Phantasy Star IV Title Screen, pre-namechange, is in the "Sega Video News Vol 2" vid IIRC

    2) One of the Sega Video Magazines features Shining Force CD with a different sounding soundtrack.

    3) The Sonic Video Preview ...

    This is the obligatory YouTube upload request.

    Also thanks for doing this. I imagine there's a great deal to be found in old Japanese videos.

    Hey, I recognize that Labyrinth footage with the missing piece of background.

    It's the same that happened in the HAG commercial!

    I'm guessing the Labyrinth Zone background going black is because of the vertical looping. It happens in the footage every time Sonic passes the point where the level loops in Act 3 and also scrolls back on screen after you have passed it (3:44 - 3:57). Not only is this evident at the slide at the start but also on the ground after the large water tunnel at the bottom of the screen, which is where the level loops (4:36).

    I'm more interested in the subtle layout changes in Labyrinth Act 3. To get to the large water tunnel, the block that falls is further right than before which results in Sonic almost falling onto a badnik (4:02). The monitor in the small alcove that you jump to from the endless water slide is an invincibility as opposed to a shield as well (3:59). Spikes are also missing in the water tunnel (4:27).

    Nice, my turn! Even though I made a topic of this last year. :ssh:

    An old short Japanese preview of Sonic R that features some rudimentary details: a scratch version of the famous Sonic R theme "Super Sonic Racing" (though you would have to listen closely, the obnoxious Japanese announcer guy keeps blabbing over it).

    Edit: I just watched footage of early NiGHTS with alternate music and unrefined sound effects, along with an exclusive interview with Naka, Oshima, and Iizuka-san. Fans of that game are in for a treat. :)

  8. I'm still uploading these to my webspace, but I'm basically on the last batch. Does anyone want me to search for any other Sega things on NND? Some terminology would probably be helpful here, as anything too broad and I'll be digging through possibly hundreds of pages of junk anime MADs and memes.

  9. One video I managed to grab not from a Video Magazine - this is footage of the Shenmue Online event at TGS 2004.

    Nico Nico Douga is quite the treasure chest of Japanese gaming history indeed.

    Here's a video for all Sega / NiGHTS fans. This segment originated from an episode of Sega Video Magazine and it features the initial unveiling of NiGHTS at the Japanese Tokyo Prince Hotel way back in March 26, 1996; followed by an old, rare interview with Yuji Naka, Naoto Oshima, and Takashi Iizuka. Also included in the segment are footage of the game's early stages of development, including a different stage layout for Spring Valley. Many of the sound effects heard are also very different, and even the music sounds unrefined!

    Once again, it's from this particular source.

  11. On the note of Saturn games, jeez louise the "Sega Saturn" tag on NND is LOADED With EROGE. How am I supposed to find teh baetas between all these boobies?

    ... not that I mind boobies, really.... ^^;

    Maybe I should run a Dreamcast search...

    (Does anyone here want me to look up videos for anything specific game-wise?)

    Welp, this.
    NicoNico fan videos are magic.

    That being said, thanks for actually taking the effort to go through the SBM videos—I downloaded them all quite a while back, but basically sat on them out of lack of interest.

    Well, since not everyone holds the same interest in certain games I imagine a lot of interesting stuff gets skipped, so I'm going through these videos looking for games I know. I've uploaded my finds to my channel.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kOYfeQQIcQ

    There's also Pulseman, Crusader of Centy, and Sonic Chaos, but the forum isn't allowing me to link to all of them so I'm sure you guys can guess to just look at my videos =P

    Interesting differences. There's other games I'm not totally familiar with that possibly are different in these videos too, including Phantasy Star 4 and Gunstar Heroes. I think I've gone through and found most of the stuff I'm familiar with. Sonic CD keeps coming up too.

  14. I'll embed the Sonic Chaos video;

    The most interesting thing is probably how the working title was "Sonic the Hedgehog 3".

    Hey, so, things have moved on a bit since March 2012 and there are now YouTube mirrors. Someone must have heard my calls

    Madroms also has a lot of them up with complete descriptions and timetables. I believe they are there up to mid-95 or so. They are niconico reuploads with permission, however he does own the tapes too.

    So I've started my own sift-through of this

    http://segaretro.org/Category:Sega_Video_Magazine
    (please fix inaccuracies)

    I've only done four pages so far and have already encountered three different builds of Sonic CD, among obvious prototypes for Shining Force II, Madou Monogatari I and Dyna Brothers 2 (although it's all mostly prototype footage). Also lots of coverage of the Game Gear RPG "Youhouden Hisuimaru: Bonten no Ken" which was never released.

    This is a big haul - I'm surprised it was sat on for so long

  18. It's unfortunately merely because there aren't many people who can dig this deeply into NicoNico (And then whom would rip said videos. And then would upload them WITHOUT a watermark, I'm looking at you AssemblerGames). I've taken similar kinds of videos and uploaded them to my YouTube Channel if you want to look. There's loads of old Famicom promotional videos, looks inside game studios, stuff that in retrospect is obvious prototype footage (Transformers: Convoy no Nazo is particular hilarious about it, because the player has invincibility to hide the bullshit game deaths.) and... well, crap, it's a goldmine! And stuff is still be put up on NicoNico which looks interesting to this date. I just linked the PCEngineFX forums to the "Brut Press" video magazine vids, where it shows that NEC planned an add-on to the PC-FX to... make it a fax machine. o.o

    There's unfortunately some signs of videos that used to be on NicoNico but are now gone - I missed some Satellaview game play archives, in particular, and the Hudson Caravan 10th Anniversary Video is no longer there, although I saved that one. Another one I ended up missing is a rip of the "Mario no Daibouken" VHS, where a guy in a goofy plastic Mario suit tells you all the game's wacky glitches.

    Speaking of fax machines apparently there was a "Sega Fax Club" in Japan... where you'd be... faxed things

    It's not so much the NicoNico thing that saddens me, it's just I remember the days where SWS2B would obsess over three or four second clips of Sonic 2 in the hopes of seeing that walking animation. I know for a fact hoarders could have spilt the beans on this years ago, but we're kept in the dark for no reason at all

    Some of this undocumented Sega stuff is insane but the Nintendo stuff... christ. I haven't even been looking and I probably have a wiki's worth of Nintendo material (although it's the awkward sort of Nintendo material - mostly famiclones and third-party controllers). Too bad there's not really a competent "Nintendo Retro".

  20. Well, there's Bulbapedia and Mario Wiki and the like, but basically the deal with Nintendo is that each franchise's fans are more fragmented from each other, whereas with Sega you'd be hard-pressed to find a Sega fan in the US or Europe who doesn't like Sonic (in some form) regardless of how well he knows of or likes the other games (The double-edged sword side of this being that there are Sonic fans that care for nothing else Sega-wise). Also, the general "NES Retrogamer" can't seem to think outside their own region and cares more for dollar values than data preservtion, if NintendoAge is anything to go by. It also doesn't help that unlike Sega, Nintendo is very good at keeping it's shit under wraps and secret.

    As for being "kept in the dark"... well, it's a bunch of Japan-only VHS tapes. Did you really expect to be digging up Japanese VHSes for Sega prototype videos years ago? I sure didn't, although perhaps in retrospect I shouldn't have been as surprised.
