Having a few beers, watching some YouTube and thought this might be a fun thing to do... What is your favourite Sonic review? Can be text or video. Post it! Clement's Review of Sonic 06 is a classic for me. It's all over the place, it's long, but I like how he goes into this shit game with genuine passion, and obsesses over it for seemingly no other reason other than to make himself angry. His hilarious anger makes him a very likeable person. Somecallmejohnny's 06 review was a close second, but this tipped it for the real lofi feel. I'm a big sucker for those old crappy microphones and 480p quality, reminds me of the good old days...
My favorite review is one I can't seem to find again. Not long after Lost World came out, someone made a review where they mocked Roger's Sonic voice, and it was hilarious. I've tried to search for it since, but there are just too many. Other ones that tickle my fancy are Johnny's Boom reviews where he covers himself in sports tape. Ah yes, that's a real problem. I've lost many videos to the YouTube abyss. If you do find it, post it up would like to see it! EDIT: That boom review is great. Tape wrap up reminds me of that one (can't remember his bloody name now - the fat unfunny Charlie Brooker rip off - Jim Sterling??) If only Charlie Brooker made more gaming content, he was fucking great :v:
A recent one I saw that I enjoyed was GFZ's Sonic Forces review. It's good to see someone who understands the Modern Sonic formula explain to me why losing the short hop was a very bad thing. I legitimately didn't understand that issue till it was explained to me.
The Geek Critique's Sonic CD retrospective comes in two variants with different soundtracks. Ain't no beating that. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isZJyXU7R5o
Not so much a "review" of a specific game, but it's a YouTube video analyzing Sonic, so I'm going with it. The first 15-ish minutes of ShayMay's Sonic Spitball series contain, hands down, the most spot-on, comprehensive, and actually-specific explanation on the internet of what the classic Sonic gameplay is and why it's good. Every other review or analysis I've come across pays only vague, fleeting lip service to certain essential components, or takes little time to go over the minutia of the core, fundamental mechanics that make the games interesting and distinct in the first place.
Here is a review for a classic. Australian gaming show The Zone reviews Sonic 3 when it came out back in 1994. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RKMllurF3Kk&t=18m54s
Related to GamesMaster if you're in the UK - the magazine's been cancelled (after being a thing since 1993) and has the final issue out on the shelves right now - go and get a copy while you still can, it deserves a decent sendoff.
Wow, I never knew it was still going! I found my old collection of Mean Machines Sega, Saturn mag, official Sega mag, EDGE & Sonic comics a few months back, was a real nostalgic treat and could not bring myself to throw them out. Something about looking through those magazines that has never been recreated online. The sense of wonder has gone now you can see the whole game before it gets released. Maybe I'm just getting old.
Gamesmaster Magazine infamously gave Sonic 2 a 64% score in their first issue, with the editor having to explain why in a column!
Sad thing is it's not even possible to create videos like that on Youtube anymore, now that the annotation editor has been removed.
Insomnia.ac's 2 star Sonic 2 review in conjunction with the Sonic 1 review- Alex's first review in years after going to jail for robbery and stabbing a police dog- where he sings its praises and spends most of his time shitting on the Sonic 2 review and the people who wrote it.
