Is anyone else getting an improper sound loop at the title screen? I'm using SSF as well, set to standard compatibility mode. It sings:

"Super Sonic racing. Running to the point of no ret-" and then it restarts the loop.

Also, like in the final version, you can manipulate the 3D "R" on the title screen with the joystick.

EDIT:

Also, in factory for some reason, there is no collision detection on right-hand rails. Also, the wing-emblems you can pick up don't do anything. At least, not on the factory level. This is true for the Sonic coins as well.

EDIT 2:

Yes, it seems the emblems do work in more complete levels. At least the first level works, and I'm assuming the second does as well. The game just crashed during the first level, and I don't feel like starting it up again. Anyhow, the bad music loop is true across all levels (assuming the second level has no music as well) so it's safe to assume it's just filler. But why only a portion of the song? And why such an annoying loop? x.x

What's the current best Saturn emulator? SSF?

From what I can see, this was essentially the same version used for the October '97 coverage of Sonic R for the SEGA Saturn Magazine - the same levels are shown [Ruins was shown the month after] as well as the 2 player mode with worse FOV. The main difference between the coverage version and this version is that the Magazine pics had no mention of Sonic Tokens to collect.

I was able to find 7 of the 9 tokens in Resort Island. Tokens also seem to show up in the 2 player mode, but are uncollectable.[/quote]

Wow, someone managed to realize that you can press f8 for screenshots in ssf!

OK, now I'll look stupid, but how do I get running it in SSF without having to burn a CD? X_X

Video's finally done converting and whatnot.

http://megavideo.com/?v=3KN36BWY (video is a bit out of sync, blame Megavideo)

In general, there's the different title screen (which is the picture that shows at the end of the credits in the final. Also Super Sonic Racing starts at the "Everybody, everybody" part instead of the beginning. You can still play around with the R in the title, too), the obviously incomplete menus, the different loading screen, the differently modeled Chaos Emerald shown previously and the fact that you have to collect 9 coins instead of 5 (I could only find 7 in RI, too).

I played through Resort Island twice because I didn't know it looped forever and the only way to get out of a level was A+B+C+start, I thought you had to get in at least 3rd or something. There's a LOT less ings in RI, and along with the fact that the doors cost 40 and 60 rings to get in makes it hard to access those areas. Radical City seems the same for the most part, just a lot less detail and lighting (and the aforementioned expensive doors). Reactive Factory isn't even fully completed. The basic course layout is there, with some differences in the details. The most obvious difference is that it plays Can You Feel The Sunshine instead of Work it Out. Also, you can only pick up rings, no coins or emblems. You start out at a different position, and you're stuck on the first lap forever.

To be honest, I never encountered that part in the final unless you're referring to the fully complete version.
And a possibly obvious thing the RINGS text is present whereas the final is just the ring symbol and numbers. Good to see a Saturn proto is in all this

The Factory level seems to be very glitchy. I'm always in last place, and all the other racers keep lapping me! As someone mentioned before, the powerup emblems don't seem to work and there are many places where you can go through the walls.

A couple of things I have noticed that nobody else has posted yet:
* There is no collision detection between you and the CPU players; you can run straight through them
* The 'race start' music is missing the "Ready, Set, Go!" speech and seems to be a slower tempo. Same with the 'race end'

Its the cave with the emerald in Resort Island, but that pic is from the PC version that has different weather effects for the stages; basically that's Resort Island in the "snow" mode.

Stuff I've found:

In Time Attack and 2P mode, you're taken straight to the SEGA logo when you finish instead of a results screen.

When you pick up a Sonic Token, it makes a ring noise. I don't think it made any noise in the final.

The images for "1st" and "2nd" look different.

The slot machine in Radical City isn't there. Neither is the big picture of Sonic on the floor of the pinball machine (could just be the graphics being glitchy, though).

Also, is it me, or is Sonic's model different? He looks shorter and maybe even a different shade of blue.

Hmm...weird. I didn't get any poorly looped audio this time around. The game ran really well. Though I did notice something else. When you hit a speed booster, it leaves an orange and yellow trail. In the final I think it left a rainbow. Or at least a different colored trail of some sort.

The trail is the same color in the final as in the proto.

The sound does not loop at all in the levels when I play, for the record. You guys must be experiencing emulator issues/incompatibility. The number of coins is also too high in this proto. In the final there are 5 in each stage.

Ah, I guess it was my emulator acting up then, cause it really didn't show up at all. Thanks for pointing that out.

Anyone tried collecting all 9 coins in each level to see what happens? I've been trying to do that, but the graphics are so glitchy that it hurts to play it after a while. That and the glitchiness makes it to where I can't see shit sometimes.

EDIT: Alright, I got the newest version of SSF and the graphics look a lot nicer. O_O Amazing what a simple upgrade can do...

No kidding. The fact that it's nearly impossible to get enough rings within 3 laps makes it worse. I also noticed that in Resort Island, EVERY item emblem I touched only gave me Power Sneakers or a Lightning Shield. No rings, which makes it even harder to open doors. Yet in 2P mode I got 5, 10, and 20 Rings all the time. WTF?!
