First I've heard of this. Sounds like a fairly typical 1990s kids movie, the part with Robotnik recruiting bullies as his lackeys is reminiscent of things like the first Ninja Turtles. Probably best off that it never got made, I doubt the CGI of that era would have been anywhere near good enough. The interesting part is how it would've treated Sonic as an actual video game character coming into the real world. It's not a particularly original idea, and yet I can't think of a video game based movie that's actually taken this approach.

    Life.
Jeesus. This sounds exactly as '90s as you would expect. Even starring the lovechild of Chris Thorndyke and Regular-Sized Rudy from Bob's Burgers. While I can imagine many looking back fondly on this trainwreck ala the Super Mario Bros. movie or first Power Rangers movie, it would have been just as unintendedly cheesy-bad. It was fun to read, but I'm glad it didn't come to fruition. One less turd to worry about. :v:

Interesting read. Yeah, it was pretty cheesy. I find it curious that it was going to reference the test pilots story, I don't think that story was ever published in any non-Asian Sonic media?

I'm surprised that we're still learning so many previously unknown things about Sonic history.

Damn, that actually sounds like a better Sonic movie than what we're getting.

They even got Eggmanland and that "Sonic the pilot" story in it!

Why don't movie people (then and now) understand that the only human who belongs anywhere near Sonic is Eggman himself? Can't there be a Sonic movie that's just him, in his world, doing his thing?

Don't say the OVA, you know what I mean.

I appreciate that the Sonic pilot story made it in but the rest of the movie doesn't sound too hot.

A part that really stuck out was this

Since I remember getting into Sonic I've always read that the OVA was an attempt by Sega of Japan at making a Sonic series that fell through because the 2 episodes didn't do so good over there. But I don't think I've ever seen a source to this.

The OVA had to go into production around the time they were trying to make this movie and it does mention that Sega of Japan was nervous about the project.

Perhaps the OVA was their answer to what what was going on the American side? As in they really didn't like how Wonders of the World was turning out so they decided to start production on their own project.

Funny how after Wonders fell through they just didn't immediately try to bring the OVA to the West with at least a direct-to-video release during 96-97.

Even though the article makes it seems that everyone had forgotten about Sonic during those years I still think it could've done better during that time than in 1999.

Wow, that plotline is so 90s it hurts - they even threw in the word "Radical".

What a fascinating read though! I'm glad the movie didn't see the light of day because it would have been a cheesy mess, but this is certainly an interesting piece of Sonic's history regardless.

Half of Sonic adaptations suffer from a tendency to introduce and focus on unnecessary original characters, human or otherwise.

I know. I'll give stuff from the early 90's a little slack since that was before the mountains of characters we have now. But the humans' presence is my biggest gripe. We have a plethora of anthro races to choose from (even if you only include main characters), why does there need to be more goddamn humans? Hell, even Sonic 06 could've turned Soleanna into an anthro kingdom and I wouldn't be as bothered.

In my opinion, the whole humans thing could have had an approach akin to SA1&2 and Shadow The Hedgehog (in a sense).
But stuff like Sonic X and this cancelled project...truly not my cup of tea. And to say, years after SEGA axed the american project they went with Sonic X.

    Smooth Move, Knuckleheads...

Is it bad that I kind of wish this movie seen the light of day? I guess it would have if Sonic Xtreme did end up coming out. It would have been even worse if the movie was released, but the game never got a release. I know it's cheesy, but I'm sure six year old me would have loved the movie. :v:

There are bits of this that I like, such as Eggman's introduction and Sonic's bungled first go at interacting with the real world. Having the last act take place in the game world is a pretty novel idea, too.

The rest of it is pretty trite: the whole carnival thing and Eggman's grander plan in particular. Really hokey stuff. The way the movie begins and leads into Sonic and Robotnik appearing also sounds totally dreadful. Like yikes.

Really interesting article. Got a laugh out of this scrapped movie being planned to tie in with X-treme's release.

  13. I wonder if there is some old concept art out there and I would like to read the full script.
