Slightly less gay, but yeah. As I said, certainly nothing that would be in any release of a real build.

Good god that looks horrible. If I were you I'd learn a thing or two about graphic design before attempting to draw all the graphics in a game from scratch. Paintbrush tool is not good.

The best way to do HD sprites is to remake them from the scratch. Of couse, you can use the old sprites to have a base of the moviment (like Street Fighter II Turbo HD for XBOX360), but you need to redraw them, or else, the art will be pure shit.
What you need to do is something like this:
But of course, with more details and shades, I did this in five minutes, rushed a lot=P

It looks like you're just using the smudge tool in photoshop. Yuski's method is what popped into my head when I saw the thread title. I've done similar things before:
Original PSIV 'centaur' enemy
Blown up Samus edit
3x original size
This final one I'd started to mess around with the upper torso, but from the waist down its just a more detailed Centaur. Smoothing out pixel-blocks can be a painful process, I grant you, but the end results can be quite pleasing. I'm sure you can get the hang of it too.

I don't know... adding more colors, outlines, shiny stuff and anything that wasn't there just will make the graphics deviate from the original concept more, and adopt more the style of whoever made it, which people who like the original might or might not like.
I think the best way to go might be to respect the original colors and make the new graphics so the old ones will just look like a more pixellated version of the same thing. Also, using the original palette would allow to make use of the palette changes, something that Sonic games abuse.
Here's my 5-minutes attempt with the original colors. I'm sure it could look better with more time to spend on it...

Smudging the old graphics just looks awful. They definitely need redrawing from scratch. I don't think it's entirely necessary to keep the original colours though, or it might end up looking a bit like that ugly hq2x filter.

Well, I just tried to keep the original style, not adding any original stuff on my part (not even outlines, which really put a different feel to the graphics).
All these games have their own style in graphics already, some showing Tails with a bigger head than usual, others using a Sonic with bigger eyes like in this case, and I think all these things should be retained for a hypothetical HD version of each.
I mean, some people might like the Triple Trouble Sonic over Sonic Chaos' because of the subtle diferences in his head, just like some people like Sonic 3's CG model over Sonic 2's. I don't think it would
feel right to make all those different Sonics look identical in their respective games...

Maybe I'm assuming too much, but I think you're the only one who gives a shit. As long as it looks good and fits with the art style of the rest of the game, we're happy.

Actually, not really. Each game's sonic fits the game, or at least fits because we know that's how it was meant to be. That was the idea of those 'blurry' versions of the sprites, I wanted them to look a lot like their original versions, just higher resolution. But yeah, im not very happy with the monkey either.

It wasn't paintbrush, it was a few tools from Corel Painter X.

Er, I don't think it'll be needed to redraw stuff from scratch completely ignoring the old graphics... I would scale them up, and then take them as a base for the new graphics. And the problem here is that you're doing quick works. Unless somebody really puts effort in it, we won't see any good graphics.

Speaking of this, how many times do you need to upscale an old MegaDrive sprite to make it HD?
x2? x4?

Depending on the final resolution. I would say 2x but most people here seems to hate 640x480 :/

When I said paintbrush tool, I really meant any tool other than pencil, eraser and fill. If you want good looking, accurate hi-definition graphics, you're going to have to edit these pixel by pixel, not just use prefabs and lots of pretty anti-aliasing.

Which comes to my point before, 4x or larger sprites edited pixel by pixel is madness, and I wouldnt think that would be necissary.

The things one does out of boredom...

This Sonic was first made at 4x with the original colors, then shrunk to 2x (which makes it look better than plain 4x). Resizing it back to normal 1x size makes it look almost exactly the same as the original.
