Sonic the Hedgehog: Badnik-Free Edition Get your copy today! Current version: v1 My first real attempt at an actual hack... *sigh* This is a very basic hack of Sonic 1 that removes all badniks. Screenshots and videos coming soon (I hope)! Bugs: • Sega PCM is cut • Random snapping sound occurs in GHZ levels • Some things flicker Future Stuff: • Implement "Badnik Free Edition" text onto the title screen • Possibly, remove all bosses, but that would be another story. One last thing: Should I implement a Sonic Retro splashscreen?
Hmm, the concept is a little... dull. Removing things is generally easier than adding, and this is one of the weakest concepts. I mean, what makes Sonic unique are the dangerous obstacles. Also, is there a reason why I here an explosion sound on random occasions? I first noticed this in GHZ Act 2. Even as a beginner's hack, this one could've done better. If you want to make something really interesting, how about "Sonic 1: Hazard-less Edition", removing anything that can kill or hurt you (bottomless pits, water, spikes, etc.). That would be really interesting.
That post had a hidden sad tone in it. Please do not take my criticism as a personal offense or anything like that! All I wanted to do was to simply lay down some facts. The concept isn't broken, unlike it is in many other beginner hacks, it simply has some flaws. Work on these flaws and you may create something awesome one day.
Leading me to a suggestion; design a hack purely to just speedrun. Not only the removal of hazards, but tweak certain stages (MZ1 and 2, LZ2) to add new routes and kinks to give the speedrunners more choice? Also, simple ASM in giving the act time milliseconds - could be a good starting point on learning that.
I say remove everything except what's necessary. Sonic the hedgehog: a walk in the park. No enemies, no bosses, no spikes, no bottomless pits, but also no rings, no springs, no monitors. Maybe have a couple animals jumping around here and there since it's a nice little relaxing park. Change the music so everything is much clamer and relaxing. Nothing bad, just a calm stroll.
So you guys basically want Sonic 1: Easy Mode from Sonic Jam, only now with less hazards. Shoot, just remove all the alternate paths and dangers and make it Sonic 1: Modern Gaming edition. Welcome to your first comedic take on a modern issue in gaming being too easy/hand holding.
I don't. I was trying to give constructive suggestions, with minor layout and ASM changes suggested that could lead to the ability/desire to do bigger and better things. What I want is a full layout hack with no ASM changes. Not even speed-cap removal. :3
Modern Sonic isn't a walk in the park. There's tons of shit to slow you down in those games. Also I'm not suggesting add boost and shit, I'm suggesting a literal walk in the park. Take a brisk jog through GHZ in its most natural form.
Regardless of any criticism, I quiet like this idea. Removing the badniks is a good start. I'm on board with both Jayextee and Dark Sonic but in different respects. Jayextee suggested a speedrunning hack which sounds like it could be very competitive and pretty fun tbh. Maybe set up some sort of leader boards. or for a different hack: Dark Sonic suggested stripping away all badniks / hazards etc. I am completely behind this. I would love to play in a hack where it strips away all badniks / hazards / rings and hides the HUD so you can just walk around and explore. I know it may not be fun to some members, but I would certainly enjoy it, and I think It will be really awesome when you start to do some layout hacking and art hacks. I would like to think of this hack as less of a sonic game and more a chilled out, exploratory game. I'm behind this
Quick question that I have just remembered to ask. Why do these happen? Did you not just remove the badniks using SonED or and equivalent program or did you fully ASM the badniks out? Just puzzled me that's all.
Considering how enemies rarely killed anyone in Sonic Generations, this hack is probably an interesting way to see how dangerous the environments were in older games compared to newer ones.
